The New Doctor?

Or just the trailer for the 50th anniversary episode?

Or something else entirely?

Mavis, so many people have been in Doctor Who over the years, it's not even six degrees of separation!

On Betfair the odds are drifting on everyone except Rory Kinnear and Martin Freeman. At this point I have talked myself in and out of so many actors I have no clue anymore...

MavisGrind · 04/08/2013 09:53

Teej - tis true. Clive Rowe (morvin van hoff in voyage of the dammed) was in the play last night too, plus Christopher Timothy who, as we know, once played the brother of a time lord and time lords fil! Grin

RustyBear · 04/08/2013 09:55

Maybe that's why it's live this time - if they recorded it earlier on last time and it leaked, that would explain the sudden surge on Matt Smith, who as far as I remember hadn't been mentioned at all before the day of the programme. Which might indicate another complete outsider....

Yeah, I vaguely remember that they had thought the news was leaked. Purely because Matt Smith was such a random choice, there was no way that betting on him would suddenly go up without someone having inside knowledge.

Is it wrong that I am considering juggling DC's bathtime tonight so that I can watch this?!

SoupDragon · 04/08/2013 10:03

Peter Capaldi would be a good balanced match for John Hurt I think.

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 04/08/2013 11:18

Misha Collins? here

Tee2072 · 04/08/2013 12:20

No! Not Misha. No no no no no.

That is all.

I'm going to go against the grain and say I was a little disappointed in Matt Smith. He's not bad but I didn't think he was great.

Now that the idea of Peter Capeldi is in the frame, I desperately want it to be him. He'd be fantastic!

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 04/08/2013 12:47

Matt Smith was rubbish. He couldn't act his way out of a wet paper bag!

TolliverGroat · 04/08/2013 12:51

Chiwetel Ejiofor can't be the Doctor, as in my head he is going to be cast as Blake in the Blake's 7 remake.

OliviaP · 04/08/2013 13:03

Spoiler alert: they're not actually announcing the new
Doctor tonight :) eveningharold.com/2013/08/04/doctor-who-announcement-bbc-lose-rights-to-bt/

johnworf · 04/08/2013 14:10

I think John Hart might be John Hurt Hmm

TolliverGroat · 04/08/2013 14:18

Yes, he's a bit old otherwise. Also, a bit dead.

Tee2072 · 04/08/2013 14:19

Very funny OliviaP. Truly. I'm dying laughing over here.

Or maybe, JW, they are talking about this John Hart and the BBC has a new process...

Tee2072 · 04/08/2013 14:20

Cross post Tolliver!

AlphaBetaOoda · 04/08/2013 14:26

Quite good odds on Damian Maloney who seems like a good option

FrankelInFoal · 04/08/2013 14:26

Wading in with my thoughts Grin

It won't be someone really, really well known. Each of the last 3 Doctors have been relatively no -mainstream, so that (for me) rules out the likes of Peter Capaldi, Idris Elba, etc.

Rory Kinnear and Ben Wishaw (as well as Russell Tovey) have publicly ruled themselves out.

Personally, I'd like to see Andrew Scott take the role. He was sublime as Moriarty and Moffatt has previous for casting Doctor's from Sherlock - after all Matt Smith was asked to audition for the role after being turned down for the role of John Watson.

squoosh · 04/08/2013 14:30

The BBC can't afford someone really well known, it will be someone relatively well known and someone pretty cheap.

Idris Elba is more likely to aim to be the next Bond than the next Doctor, he's too big of a star for this.

FrankelInFoal · 04/08/2013 14:32

Just reading back through other posts, Benedict Cumberbatch ruled himself out as the Doctor pre-Matt Smith. He said in an interview that e never auditioned for the role but had discussed it with David Tennant (who is a friend). Tennant told him he'd have to be prepared to "be the Doctor" 24/7 for several years, seeing his face on t-shirts and kid's lunch boxes, and he decided he just wasn't prepared to handle that level of intensity.

I'll also eat my hat if Martin Freeman is the new Doctor, he's too big a star now.

Alohomora · 04/08/2013 14:47

I was thinking the same thing, I love Idris Elba but he's unlikely to fall into the Who-trap. Would love him as the next Bond.

OddBoots · 04/08/2013 14:52

So it is a male, at least according to a BBC article quoting a tweet from his media shots photographer Rankin.

(BBC article)

difficultpickle · 04/08/2013 14:52

What is Peter Capaldi doing since In the thick of it finished? I'd say he is top pick or possibly David Harewood.

teejwood · 04/08/2013 15:01

bisjo - Capaldi is Cardinal Richelieu in the new Muskateers series, which is why I haven't been taking him too seriously (even though I would love to see his version of the Doctor!) - as surely he is already tied up with that. In fact a lot of the people mooted seem to have projects lined up.
