Slim jeans ... can we wear them yet?

My teenage daughter looked at what I picked up on a whim yesterday and said, 'It's 2026 ... why are you buying slim jeans."

But I really like them ... I wanted something other than blue/black jeans which I can't wear to work ... and they had my 'long' size in stock ... can I keep them? 🤔

Are they proper skinny jeans? The POW wears them so they can't be that bad. I was pleased to see the back of them tbh but jeans really are a personal thing so you go for it.

dizzydizzydizzy · 11/10/2026 16:25

They’re reaally nice. Unfortunately not long enough in the leg for me 😢

ignore your daughter, bless her!

I recently bought a pair of wide leg jeans in a charity shop. They are not my style but they were long enough and the princely sum of £2 so I thought they would be good buy for home use or popping into Tesco. I have had non-stop compliments on them….. but only from the 20-somethings I know. (I’m 50s).

Wildgoat · 11/10/2026 16:28

Of course you can keep them and wear them, there is no law that says you need to be fashionable.

Weeellokthen · 11/10/2026 16:32

I'd rather wear skinny jeans than get blown away in a strong wind by those utterly ridiculous barrel things 😂

Seagullsandsausagerolls · 11/10/2026 16:33

I hate wide length jeans, I mean I love them in theory, but Im just about 5ft. I got caught when I was at the hairdressers last week in the rain and was wet to the knees. I took me hours when I was in to get warm again. It was awful flashbacks to the 90s. Im too old for wet knees!

Fernsarethebestplants · 11/10/2026 16:34

I think this style isn't out of fashion as such, it's just not in fashion either! They aren't truly parsnip tight jeans, and there are still a few people around styling those out!

Slim jeans are more classic, so I'd put them with something fairly contemporary and not something a bit dated, for example, a short rounded edge tailored jacket might look old-fashioned, a larger baggier one might look great. I also like these with loafers, not trainers. Short cropped jackets are cool with baggier jeans.

I don't think you have to slavishly follow fashion, but if you dress from head to toe in things from 15 years ago, that does look dated, if you mix in the odd thing from your 'heritage collection' as I think of my jeans, with some more up to date stuff, it avoids this problem.

That's what I do anyway and no-one has arrested me for crimes against fashion. Yet.

Can we not just wear what we want? Confused

Clearly yes. Next thinks someone will buy them or they wouldn't sell them.

This is the Style and Beauty section, though, so thinking through how stylish they are, given the OP's daughter thinks they are out of fashion, is a normal thing to wonder.

I remember it too back in the 90s and I use to wear heeled boots with my bootleg jeans that were always frayed and dirty! and for that reason, horror of horrors, I wore skinny jeans tucked into my wellies the other day and I didn’t care who saw me! 😆

Wear the jeans OP - I like them!

Hibiscus27 · 11/10/2026 16:42

They seem like - due to the stretch - they are cut to be close-fitting, except they don’t fit like that on the model. I like the way they hang on the model, except that in person they’d probably just look a bit too big? If I were you I’d look for jeans in this style but without the stretch. So straight, essentially, which are in, maybe not for teenagers.

Caveat: by all means wear stretch skinny jeans if that’s your vibe, just depends on how much looking ‘current’ matters to you

chattyness · 11/10/2026 16:42

Wear what you want. I do, I've never stopped wearing my skinny jeans & I don't care what others think, I look good but more importantly feel good in them.

They are very much out of fashion, but next sells many things out of fashion, as they cater to different demographics, not all people want to be on trend, they want what they like and feel comfortable in,

no one needs to wear current stuff, I don’t get the ops question, I’d certainly not bat an eyelid if I saw her, although I’d think they were old and she was just wearing then rather than went out and bought them new,

Megifer · 11/10/2026 16:48

I never knew they couldn't be worn, what happens if someone wears them?

OriginalUsername2 · 11/10/2026 17:03

They're making a comeback with less of a skintight fit according to the internet. Pair them with boxier shirts and tops rather than fitted as per some of the 2026 A/W runway collections.

Did you ask your daughter for her opinion?

What sort of shitty relationship would you have to have where your own kid can’t give an opinion,

Be like me, I'm so far behind the curve I'm inadvertently ahead of the next curve.

I had burgundy jeans in the 1990’s I remember getting some from river island with my burgundy loafers thinking I was a-may-zing

supportAct · 11/10/2026 17:20

Skinny jeans have been well and truly out of fashion for at least 2 - 3 years. Once wide leg jeans came in.

@CatSquirrelDuck no you shouldn’t wear them YET!

Parker231 · 11/10/2026 17:20

Who determines what is and isn’t in fashion?

cashmerecardigans · 11/10/2026 17:21

I’m with @chattyness, I’m still wearing slim or skinny jeans. They really suit me, I look ridiculous in wide leg trousers. Even better is the fact I’ve been picking up amazing bargains on Vinted as people are seeking their skinnies 😁

Why does someone always come onto style and beauty to say this..

You can’t have a teenage daughter. You don’t need to ask for an opinion, they’re kind enough to offer them for free. With no filters in my experience

Thecows · 11/10/2026 17:23

Why does someone always come onto style and beauty to say this..

Because it showed up in active conversations and it’s a public forum 😂

I commented because I genuinely don’t understand how an item of clothing can be freely available but a grown adult comes to ask if she can wear them. Obviously this board is not my natural habitat.

Sillyme1 · 11/10/2026 17:29

I’m old enough to remember and wear flared trousers! I swore never again. I wear what I like now including slim jeans! Life’s too short and at my age no one looks at me anyway!
