Slim jeans ... can we wear them yet?

My teenage daughter looked at what I picked up on a whim yesterday and said, 'It's 2026 ... why are you buying slim jeans."

But I really like them ... I wanted something other than blue/black jeans which I can't wear to work ... and they had my 'long' size in stock ... can I keep them? 🤔

I never knew they couldn't be worn, what happens if someone wears them?

Instant execution by the firing squad I presume!

Skinny jeans have been well and truly out of fashion for at least 2 - 3 years. Once wide leg jeans came in.

@CatSquirrelDuck no you shouldn’t wear them YET!

Who are tou to tell people what they should and shouldn't wear? You are strange.

No, just fashionable!

I don’t usually follow fashion to the T, but I know what looks good and when. Skinny jeans are not a cool look at the moment. Any jeans but skinny jeans are okay.

ParsonMaybold · 13/10/2026 19:07

This is a thread for Style and Beauty. If people aren’t interested in that, nor what’s fashionable, I don’t know why they come on here and get offended by those who are.

Skinny jeans, rightly, belong in the ‘no way’ pile at the moment. They are great for dog walking with muck boots, but as a fashion choice? They look awful.

Oh great. Now the next time I drop in, I'll have to trawl through yet another trillion gazillion 'style and fashion aren't the same' posts.

OhcantthInkofaname · 13/10/2026 20:56

Anything other than classic boot cut or straight leg jeans are just devotion to "fast fashion". In the past 20-25 years we have had several incarnations of jeans, low rise, skinny, ultra skinny, barrel leg, carrot pegs....and several I haven't mentioned. Jeans last forever and these new designs just line designers pockets with cash.

Who determines what is and isn’t in fashion?

The catwalks, and then the high street copies.

You do have an option .

Fair. The repetition makes this board very tedious at times and means I spend less and less time here but I guess that’s not a bad thing.

As if by magic, Meghan appears in a pair of M and S slim jeans! That was the exact look I was talking about, slim jeans, ankle showing (the person she was having lunch with had loafers, Meghan had ridiculously high heels favoured by celebs for pap shots, not walking), and with a large blazer. I wear a similar version of this outfit to work in a more low-key way, but it's a good example of styling one 'dated' thing in a contemporary way. She does not look high fashion in any sense, it's the kind of thing Diana would have worn back in the day.

She’s wearing straight jeans, not slim,

Gettingbysomehow · 16/10/2026 21:27

I lost 6 stone so Im wearing the slim jeans. Ive spent a lifetime being fat and wearing baggy clothes. Not skinnies though. Skinnies are horrible.

Pretty much backing up my post from page 3

I live in London and was recently in NY for work for a week and have noticed lots of slimmer jeans recently. In NY ankle length seemed to be everywhere, and in both cases, more straight or slim than skinny. I'm guessing we'll be seeing more on the high streets by spring.

I was in Marylebone today and, again, noticed a significant number of people in slimmer ankle length jeans.

I didn't like the heels at all. They didn't look right then combined with a tuxedo jacket - no. But that's just me. 🤷‍♀️

Agreed, I think loafers are more stylish, but this very high heel thing is both a US and a celeb thing. All the women in the Trump administration wear them, I've wondered if flats are in in the US.

It's a UK thing for women in the Royal Family.

I seldom see women in the US out and about wearing high heels. Flats are definitely in.

Can't you wear whatever the fuck you want as an adult? Obviously within reason.

Of course I can, and I did on a night out this week.

If you have not experienced the joys of your very own teenage girl's commentary on clothing choices and how it can make you hesitate at times when shopping, then you haven't lived 😂

My own experience is that they either take the piss out of what you're wearing or it ends up living in their wardrobe (or on their floor). Quite a lot of my things seem to go to uni now 😂

boxofshite · 17/10/2026 15:36

They are definitely on the way back which makes sense as we have had baggier cuts for years now.

BatsInHibernation · 17/10/2026 15:46

I read somewhere like harpers bazaar or vogue (accidentally stumbled online), that 'heritage' jeans are a new trend and those are slim jeans, so I think your daughter is incorrect.

Just been out to a restaurant and noticed lots of young women wearing ……
Flares.

And towering heels - and it wasn’t even evening.

Not London.

Vitrolinsanity · 17/10/2026 19:49

You’ll be prizing skinny jeans of my cold, dead legs. If they’re good enough for Kate, and they are obviously, they’re good enough for Vitriol.

were they the same cut ss the original flares though? These are my favourite jeans, I have them in two colours, the lighter wash they had last year and this darker wash from this year,

arguably they are flares , but the cut is very different and I don’t wear with heels, I wear with trainers or loafers
