Slim jeans ... can we wear them yet?

My teenage daughter looked at what I picked up on a whim yesterday and said, 'It's 2026 ... why are you buying slim jeans."

But I really like them ... I wanted something other than blue/black jeans which I can't wear to work ... and they had my 'long' size in stock ... can I keep them? 🤔

Who determines what is and isn’t in fashion?

You can Google this, but the designers create products, which filter to shops. They they gain in popularity, and become fashionable as so many people want them.

as said though better to google.

HoppityBun · 11/10/2026 17:32

There’s no way I’m wearing these wide legged efforts that look as though a gust of wind would send you sailing the high seas. I’m short and I do not wish to look like I’m emerging from the middle of a box.

Thebutterflyslovemybush · 11/10/2026 17:34

I've never stopped wearing my stretch skinnys and have only recently ventured to a straight fit. Can't stand barrel legs, I'm very short so I'd just look daft.

hellomylov3 · 11/10/2026 17:36

I've been wearing skinny jeans non- stop since about 2010. Couldn't care less if they are out of fashion 👖 🤣

I found a good quote - below . However I stick to what I like, what’s makes me feel good and styles I know suit me better.

The most important thing to understand is this: fashionable doesn't necessarily mean beautiful, and unfashionable doesn't necessarily mean bad. Trends are a mixture of design, culture, commerce, social influence and personal taste.

Tell her slim jeans are coming back. All the fashion and style influencers are talking about it.

Rafting2022 · 11/10/2026 17:06

Did you ask your daughter for her opinion?

Yes and no ... I was asking about the colour 😂

They're not 'skinny' on me; they really are just 'slim'. I can't do skinny anymore either as they put too much pressure on my knees.

I do have some more on trend jeans, straighter cut with a bit of flare/boot cuttish at the bottoms, but I have resisted the true 'wide leg' jeans and 'barrel cut' jeans while they've been in as I just don't like them for me. To me, barrel cut jeans make most people look bow-legged which I don't think is a great look.

Because it showed up in active conversations and it’s a public forum 😂

I commented because I genuinely don’t understand how an item of clothing can be freely available but a grown adult comes to ask if she can wear them. Obviously this board is not my natural habitat.

You don't have a judgy teenage daughter, do you? And I'd like her to be willing to be seen with me in public. 😂

Same. I live rurally and now we are once again in mud season, skinnies in wellies are the best option!

Who determines what is and isn’t in fashion?

People who want to sell you new clothes to replace the ones they've only just sold you, which were lovely and stylish then but are suddenly horrible and dated.

hellomylov3 · 11/10/2026 18:00

Yes mellongoose no mud on the ends that way!

Skinny jeans have been well and truly out of fashion for at least 2 - 3 years. Once wide leg jeans came in.

@CatSquirrelDuck no you shouldn’t wear them YET!

Skinny jeans are very much back in fashion. No doubt the high street will catch up eventually. 😂

Edited

A slim cut is different to a skinny cut.

Dontcallmescarface · 11/10/2026 18:06

Slim/skinny jeans have never been out of "fashion" as far as I'm concerned. I look ridiculous in anything wider and feel like a sack of spuds. Plus I've got great legs. Wear what you want when you want (within reason of course, a see-through top in Waitrose may cause more than a few raised eyebrows), as long as it makes you feel comfortable and happy with your choice then, honestly, why what does it matter.

MiddleAgedDread · 11/10/2026 18:07

Wear what you want! I have those jeans in dark
blue and black for work and they’re really comfy and fairly smart for the office.

EvilNextDoor · 11/10/2026 18:07

I still wear my skinny jeans, I’ve found apart from slightly bootcut ones they are the only ones which suit me 🤷‍♀️

I look stupid in those barrel ones (even the shop assistant kinda smirked when I tried a pair on) wide leg don’t suit me either..slim leg ones also don’t seem to sit right

So yeah I’m still in my skinny jeans

socialbatteryisdead · 11/10/2026 18:10

Wear what you like. No teenager is going to like what you wear. I saw some teenagers yesterday with g strings poking out of their jeans. I wouldn’t do that 😂

I agree. Those barrel or wide leg ones look like clown trousers, hideous.

I tried some on and just looked absurd, fashionable or not I won't be going out looking like that.

Aydel · 11/10/2026 18:24

I think slim and straight leg jeans are more classic. I look awful in wide leg or barrel jeans - much better in something fitted, like slim, bootleg or slim flares.

Lifestooshort71 · 11/10/2026 16:24

Are they proper skinny jeans? The POW wears them so they can't be that bad. I was pleased to see the back of them tbh but jeans really are a personal thing so you go for it.

The POW is not a style setter. She does what she does very well but stylish is not her forte.

Kayakerpaddleboarderwalker · 11/10/2026 18:27

I am still wearing skinny jeans. I have tried wide leg jeans and I hate them. I think they look really scruffy. To be honest, I wear what I want to wear. I have never worn something just because it is in fashion. I please me and wear what I feel comfortable in and what suits me. So what someone else thinks is irrelevant. Skinny jeans and slim jeans are still being sold, so there must be a market for them. I also think there is a fine line between what an under 20 or 30 can wear and what an over 50's can wear. My mum never wore the same clothes as me when I was in my 20's or 30's and I wouldn't have expected her to. Wear your slim jeans and ignore what anyone else says.

Singasonga · 11/10/2026 18:29

The kids disdain tight-fitting clothes, you can just carry on wearing your skinnies. I mean, Barbara Cartland kept the same make up for decades, so it’s hardly unknown for older people to dress as their favorite decade!

009395elj · 11/10/2026 18:34

I will only wear skinny jeans and think all the wide legged,barrel/ carrot styles look ridiculous on everyone! I was pretty pissed off over the summer not being able to get skinny cropped jeans anywhere. Absolutely don’t care what the ‘fashion’ is ,I know what I like to wear.

seahorsessky · 11/10/2026 18:35

Tala have already said fitted are back. And I thought the post-Mean Girls generation was anti fashion, and pro women wearing what they want?

Looking at certain periods is more shocking than others, and baggy trousers, in retrospect, will be laughed at more. Wear what you want, and avoid wet flappy material around your legs!
