Slim jeans ... can we wear them yet?

My teenage daughter looked at what I picked up on a whim yesterday and said, 'It's 2026 ... why are you buying slim jeans."

But I really like them ... I wanted something other than blue/black jeans which I can't wear to work ... and they had my 'long' size in stock ... can I keep them? 🤔

My 23 year old daughter wears George flares. They fit a high full bum like hers but are not baggy on the thigh. I found an extra nwt pair on fleebay.
However to wear wellies (we live rurally) she changes to into straight or skinnies.

My tip would be if you find jeans that suit you buy two pairs. Even the same brand change factories and can end up being cut differently.

NeelyOHara · Yesterday 07:11

I’m sorry but they are hideous. The fit looks horrible and the colour doesn’t work on them. You can do way better.

I am slim, they look utterly ridiculous on me. Imo they don't look particularly good on anyone of any shape.

I think they look great on the vast majority of people I see wearing them, so much more flattering then a skinny cut parsnip leg.

ParsonMaybold · Yesterday 07:25

Those jeans are dreadful. The cut is awful, the colour is hideous and they’ve styled them to make them look as frumpy as possible.

I'd rather wear skinny jeans than get blown away in a strong wind by those utterly ridiculous barrel things 😂

These barrel jeans look utterly ridiculous. They'll soon go the way of shell suits imho.

DrumsPleaseFab · Yesterday 07:50

On MN in S&B there is generally a strong anti-fashion sentiment and most people say to just wear what you like

it also seems most people hate the barrel leg trend. I really love barrel and balloon pants, LOVE them

it is hard to explain why, I just do 😁

but if you hate them, obviously do not wear them and wear your favourite skinnies

OP asked: can we wear them yet? To which the only answer is “wear what you like” but really if you are asking if they are back in fashion: not as far as I can tell…

ThatOldWomanNextDoor · Yesterday 08:05

The whole fashion industry is based on making women feel 'old fashioned'.

It's quite laughable at the number of jean shapes now- carrot, barrel, wide, slim, bootleg, skinny, etc etc. All 'in and out' to make us spend money.

Wear what you like. I see women wearing every sort of jeans there are and I don't think Oh dear, she' so dated'.

ThatOldWomanNextDoor · Yesterday 08:07

That photo is not a skinny jean IMO.
It's baggy on the model and I'd say they were slim leg or straight.

Shinyandnew1 · Yesterday 08:10

There were threads on here in about 2010 saying skinny jeans were going out of fashion and there are still plenty of people wearing them!

Conniebygaslight · Yesterday 08:11

I was wearing wide leg jeans for a decade before they came back in. I'm gutted that they're a thing again because I don't like to be a sheep. I'd wear slim jeans if I were you if you like them. Catherine looks gorgeous in hers.

Galexia · Yesterday 08:11

I never stopped. What is with all this baggy shit. Slim jeans with a looser jumper looks good I think 🤷🏻‍♀️

teacupmadam · Yesterday 08:16

According to Vogue, skinny jeans are coming back in so unfortunately, your daughter isnt up to date with the latest catwalk fashion trends OP! Gucci and Valentino and many others are all showcasing skinny jeans.

What appears on the catwalks filters down to high street so its only a matter time now

Are they proper skinny jeans? The POW wears them so they can't be that bad. I was pleased to see the back of them tbh but jeans really are a personal thing so you go for it.

I guess I am definitely old enough to ‘wear skinny jeans’ because all I can figure is Prisoner of War… who or what is the POW

eta as soon as I posted I thought Princess of Wales?! Not sure she’s the style example kids are following these days though. She’s a golden oldie isn’t she?

I think Vogue lost most of its fashion relevance decades ago 😂 They no longer are the style bible they used to be

i’d even say Vogue is very out of vogue

😂 They included photos of the catwalks, so this isn't just Vogue plucking a trend out of thin air.

You're very welcome to think Vogue has lost its relevance, but the catwalk images rather speak for themselves...

Yes, she is and I mentioned her tongue in cheek!

LastNightMyPJsSavedMyLife · Yesterday 08:59

You can wear whatever you like.

Rollergirl79 · Yesterday 09:03

I wish people would just wear what they like, all this is it on trend malarkey is ridiculous.

fancytoes · Yesterday 09:16

The proper answer is ‘of course, wear what you like!’

However, I saw a lady in maybe her 50s in skinnies, trainers and a top yesterday (my staple wardrobe until earlier this year) and whilst she had a young face, she instantly looked dated. Same with a lady in slim/skinnies and ankle boots with a heel.

Shame, they were so useful. I am now in transitional season cropped from Zara and am rapidly worrying about what my ankles will do in a month or so… wide leg make me look huge.

But who cares?! (Me, obvs…)

ClaireEclair · Yesterday 09:22

I still wear mine. Never considered those Barrel leg jeans. Was watching Morherland the other day and noticed how good Liz and Amanda look in their skinny jeans.

See, I think the new style jeans makes people look like children’s tv presenters and skinny jeans look much more chic. Maybe I’m totally unfashionable 😆😆

Even when in fashion there was nothing chic about skinny jeans,,

Crunchingleaf · Yesterday 09:32

I have slim jeans, straight jeans, wide legs, flares that I rotate. Also have skinny jeans in wardrobe if I want.
Is this not what everyone is doing just wearing what they feel like?

I spent the day in London and saw a surprising amount of slim and skinny jeans, maybe they are coming back in a small way.

I live in London and was recently in NY for work for a week and have noticed lots of slimmer jeans recently. In NY ankle length seemed to be everywhere, and in both cases, more straight or slim than skinny. I'm guessing we'll be seeing more on the high streets by spring.

Floisme · Yesterday 09:53

Unlike those grim years when skinny jeans had an iron grip on the high street, pretty much every shape and style of jeans is available now. These are good times. Enjoy them while they last.

Your daughter is a typical teenager who sees it as her job to sneer at her mum no matter what she wears. Give it a few more years and she'll probably be delightful.
