Slim jeans ... can we wear them yet?

My teenage daughter looked at what I picked up on a whim yesterday and said, 'It's 2026 ... why are you buying slim jeans."

But I really like them ... I wanted something other than blue/black jeans which I can't wear to work ... and they had my 'long' size in stock ... can I keep them? 🤔

My own experience is that they either take the piss out of what you're wearing or it ends up living in their wardrobe (or on their floor). Quite a lot of my things seem to go to uni now 😂

Yes I remember meeting my daughter's best friend in town one day and commented that she had the exact same jumper on as I had bought the week before. She laughed and said I had good taste. It wasn't until I arrived home and relayed the meeting to my daughter, that she told me she had lent my jumper to her friend the night before because she was cold !!

were they the same cut ss the original flares though? These are my favourite jeans, I have them in two colours, the lighter wash they had last year and this darker wash from this year,

arguably they are flares , but the cut is very different and I don’t wear with heels, I wear with trainers or loafers

These were fitted to the knee then quite a pronounced flare. I’m more of a Gap Long n’ Lean fan myself - still wear them sometimes.

The heels were quite something!

DD who is a young teen wears that style (fitted then flared) - with sneakers though!

Megan’s jeans are straight cut M&S, not slim cut.

This is true. People are wearing lots of slimmer type jeans though, I agree with whoever said not everyone in London is wearing baggies any more.

In a very posh part of London recently there were many drop-dead gorgeous women aged 30-45+ wearing skinny jeans. They can't all be #old fashioned'.
It's mainly the younger teens / 20-somethings in wide jeans.

I live just outside London and am in London most weeks, this isn’t whay I see at all,

I don't see tight parsnip skinnies, I do see slimmer/straight or bootcut quite a bit. I think the fairly classic looks look fairly classic! Even with jeans. Extremes less so.

Yes this is what I see, lots of wide, straight, balloon, mom etc a few bootcut, some flare, very few skinnies but London is full of tourists and some counties they are still fashionable,

I did see a lot of skinnies at a gig recently in a more small town location, younger women, not expensively dressed, so likely not the kind to have the money to change jeans with fashion,

I guess it depends where you go, but my daughter is in her late 20s and neither her or her freinds wear skinnies, and my friends sons, who have a lot of female friends, nor do they,

this doesn’t mean people shouldn’t, we should all wear whay we please, but I’m certainly not seeing in London many “drop dead gorgeous women 35 plus” all in skinnies, I see the opposite, and women of all levels of attractiveness

Floisme · 21/10/2026 14:57

Isn't the point that we see women wearing pretty much every style of jeans imaginable at the moment, and have done so for about the last 10 years?
And isn't that a great thing?
And yet it feels like there are people who would rather go back to the days when their personal favourite style was the dominant one.

TealReader · 22/10/2026 19:40

@Floisme you are supposed to say that barrels look ridiculous on everyone and skinnies are the only jeans that look good on everyone. I love the different styles available right now, I wear most of them and love them. Skinnies aside but I never liked jeans with elastane.

@Wildgoat My DD is a bit older than yours and hates wide legs. Still in skinnies and prefers those.

Me too! I don't even dislike skinnies but I did get very bored with them and I grew to resent them because they had such a stranglehold on the high street for so long. But I'm glad that anyone who likes them can still buy them.

I'm so tired of 'Everyone looks shit in ....' aka 'How dare other people wear something I don't like'.

(Edited because I'd accidentally cut off a sentence.)

Some posters on Mumsnet have a strange obsession with skinny jeans, and insisting that they are still the height of fashion and anyone who says different, or wears a different style, looks hideous.
It’s also the same about anyone who dares to spend more than a tenner on a wedding. They will apparently have an awful day, and marriage - and will be probably divorced in 18 months. Whilst they personally had their wedding on their driveway, and everybody ate dogshit in a bun and said it was the best wedding they’ve ever, ever been to.
It’s like clockwork.

Yeah it’s weird, skinnies went out of fashion five to six years ago and there has been regular threads saying they are coming back ever since, with accusations of people hating them and having some form of emotional reaction,

we all wore skinnies, most of us liked them, most of us got sick of them, nearly every singke person who wore them, the first time they put them on or saw them on someone else thought they looked hideous and unflattering,, and we all just got used to it,

they have their practical aspects, of course, if you’re wearing wellies for example, but they are out of fashion and very likely will be for a good many years yet, where they will come back, but with a twist, to make them modern at the time,

fuschiaproudparrot · 24/10/2026 09:47

Perception is definitely an important aspect of this. I used to love skinny jeans and did wear the obligatory big top over it . When I now see women dressed like this I think omg 😬 . It's not flattering . It emphasises the often apple shape they are trying to hide.
