Slim jeans ... can we wear them yet?

My teenage daughter looked at what I picked up on a whim yesterday and said, 'It's 2026 ... why are you buying slim jeans."

But I really like them ... I wanted something other than blue/black jeans which I can't wear to work ... and they had my 'long' size in stock ... can I keep them? 🤔

I love skinny jeans. Wear them. Who cares what anyone else thinks?!

Footloosenotfancy · 11/10/2026 21:55

Stylish doesn't need to be fashionable.

I've been wearing wide legs all summer, I've always loved flares so I don't mind the wide leg, but the high waists don't suit me and are uncomfortable. And now the rain and winters here and the Docs are coming out again, the wide legs just don't look right, so it's going to be back to slim legs again.

I think you have to be slim for the wide leg jeans to suit.

I am slim, they look utterly ridiculous on me. Imo they don't look particularly good on anyone of any shape.

Who determines what is and isn’t in fashion?

Businessmen and celebrities as far as I can work out.

Waitingfordoggo · 11/10/2026 22:04

Fernsarethebestplants · 11/10/2026 16:40

Clearly yes. Next thinks someone will buy them or they wouldn't sell them.

This is the Style and Beauty section, though, so thinking through how stylish they are, given the OP's daughter thinks they are out of fashion, is a normal thing to wonder.

I don’t think style and fashion are necessarily synonymous though, are they?

Style is what suits the wearer, and perhaps shows something of their personality or creativity. Whereas fashion is just what’s dictated by the people who want your money 😉

Empress13 · 11/10/2026 22:08

You can wear what you want there are no rules

SallyAnnDrivesACar · 11/10/2026 22:13

I ❤️ skinny jeans !! They are my one true love. I have 36" legs and they suit me so much better !

Lifestooshort71 · 11/10/2026 16:24

Are they proper skinny jeans? The POW wears them so they can't be that bad. I was pleased to see the back of them tbh but jeans really are a personal thing so you go for it.

The POW is not fashionable 🤣

Denim4ever · 11/10/2026 22:30

Not a million miles from straight jeans so quite on trend.

Skinny jeans are not out of fashion, wide legs are on the decline. The ultra wide legs teens were wearing 2 years ago are not fashion forward now.

The big story is more tailored jeans. So wider leg or straight. Not folded flat, but we're not quite at the ironed in crease stage yet

CrystalSingerFan · 11/10/2026 23:09

Sitting here, old, wearing my skinny jeans. (Wear what you like, peeps. Landfill doesn't need them right now.)

Anyone out there remember loon pants? And cheesecloth tops? And.... afghan coats?

Franxi · 11/10/2026 23:15

Wildgoat · 11/10/2026 16:28

Of course you can keep them and wear them, there is no law that says you need to be fashionable.

Exactly! If you like them, just wear them. If you want to be fashionable, then they aren’t the right jeans for you.

Yes, if the POW wears them, then you can guarantee they aren’t fashionable. That’s not her look.

I really disagree. I’m short, and wide leg and barrel look good on me. Skinny look weird as I have thin legs (but wider at the top) and it throws out my proportions. It’s all about the length and the style. Cropped barrel and long wide (fitted on the hips) good on me. Straight look fine but dull. Skinny make me look like a cartoon character. There are jeans for everyone, but I think skinny are the hardest to pull off universally.

BiteSizeByzantine · 11/10/2026 23:33

What trainers look good with skinnies, I'm out of practice!

Poppover · 11/10/2026 23:55

They will have to prise my slim and skinny jeans off my body when I go. They’re the only style that look good on me. I’m trying to make them come back in to fashion before boot weather as that is my winter uniform - but I sometimes feel I’m an army of one. Wear the slim fits, OP. Join me!

BibbityBoppityTwo · Yesterday 00:02

I understand they’re not in fashion, but they do really suit some women. I often see women wearing them and think they look great. Wear what you feel good in, I say. Any minute now we’ll be told they’re back again.

AllFloatOn · Yesterday 00:15

Show her the vogue piece someone linked and tell your DD you’re ahead of the game! I always say people look best in what suits them. Not every trend works for every body. I have some slightly wider jeans but mainly wear slim/skinny/leggings/tights.

Purchase what you want it’s your money. I bought some stressed jeans. My daughter who was early twenties at the time told me to donate them as they had rips in them. I replied with. “I just bought them from M&S”
Nothing else was said on the matter ever. I still wear them. She will be 30 soon enough. I am not fast fashion.

But it's likely your DD would be all over them if they were in fashion.

Like leggings, short top and white socks. No-one would dress like that if it wasn't a trend.

I have barrel jeans and I like them and feel good in them. I also have a lovely pair of M&S Autograph flares that I got in the sale a few years ago. And some skinnies that I haven't worn for ages, mostly because it's been summer and I like to wear them with biker boots. Also for a while they didn't fit but I've lost a bit of weight so perhaps now they will.

This thread has inspired me to wear all of them this week. Like a PP I'm both behind and ahead of the curve.

JayJayj · Yesterday 06:45

I never stopped wearing skinny jeans. If wearing boots, where do you put the extra fabric?

Tooldforthisshit · Yesterday 06:51

I wear slim jeans as I'm 5'10" with huge knockers. No arse.
I believe in the 50/50 rule- tight bottom half to looser top and vice versa.
I look awful in baggy trousers (tried that for school in the early 80s).
I can wear palazzo pants if the hip is fitted.

Jeans are difficult anyway. I've just bought three new pairs, white stuff, NMDJ and Next. All rubbish on me.

AngelWithASword · Yesterday 06:57

Wide leg fine for warm dry weather but don't keep my legs warm or dry in winter. Wearing slim/ straight (not skinny) from now, all the way through winter.

WarriorN · Yesterday 06:58

Skinny jeans are classic; 60s, 70s, 80, fashion staples at one point or another.

WarriorN · Yesterday 06:59

Barrels only work in the winter with thermals beneath

skinnys are best for boots

Why does someone always come onto style and beauty to say this..

Because style and fashion are two separate things, and part of having your own style is wearing what you want to and what suits you, regardless of fashion.
