I'm currently looking at my wardrobe and what I might want to update it for autumn.

I'm mid50s, 5'7" and size 14.

I'm currently looking at these:

Lovely COS coat, @mrschocolatte . That reminds me, I bought a MaxMara camel coat on eBay last year, so looking forward to digging that out again. It's a thing of beauty.

PatChaunceysFruitCake · 26/08/2026 21:45

So many lovely things on this thread. I’ve enjoyed reading it.

I’m not buying anything until I’ve lost weight. I simply refuse to buy in the bigger size I’m creeping into. Hoping the ban on new clothes will motivate me.

Pirate boots in M&S, I want to go back to the 00s and these really remind me of some I used to have, although these are less strappy, also unsure if they’ll have the baggy effect but worth a try on. https://www.marksandspencer.com/suede-buckle-strap-mid-calf-flat-boots/p/clp61214918?intid=mobile_app_pdp_share&color=Khaki

I have the original VW pirate boots, given to me 15 years ago and worn about 20 times..... `i need to get out more

Oh, I love that tweed navy coat from White Stuff! My base wardrobe is navy; I hardly have any black.

I live a very casual life now that I'm retired, but don't want to fall into too dowdy. I'm eyeing up some clogs; either Dansko, Birk, or similar. I find I reach for slip on shoes more often than lace-ups!

I bought a grey sleeveless knitted jumper come jacket thing from TU. It cost £6 in the sale. It’s really lovely. I bought this shirt from Zara to go under it.

https://www.zara.com/uk/en/zw-collection-striped-shirt-with-frog-fastening-p01319819.html?v1=585916782

I have wide leg jeans from Mango that I bought a few weeks ago. They sit nicely and are a softer denim material.

I need black boots for work and black thermals for work too. Boots will be safety boots and thermals will be unliquo. I’ll need a new jacket but as it’s for work, that will be a Vinted purchase.

Beyond that I really don’t need anything. I am going to London in a month so may see something when shopping.

Any suggestions for autumn ankle or calf boots but not leather or suede? I hate the plastic 'vegan' leather but am veggie so try not to buy leather.... A conundrum!!

minnowonthesay · 27/08/2026 07:34

These looked a bit different in M&S yesterday, come in black too

I’m dreadful at clothes! St work I wear dresses and blazers. Just seen this one - https://www.landsend.co.uk/Womens_Corduroy_Blazer/pp/P_44573.html?dwvar_P__44573_sizeVariation=59&dwvar_P__44573_color=NAV&cgid=Tab_2&pageType=fp&pageType=search

Hideous or go for it?I quite like the green.

(I’m a size 14 aged just below 50 and I’m a teacher in a private school that asks all staff to wear a blazer or a jacket)

Livingthedream1978 · 27/08/2026 09:30

I really want some good quality, nice plain T-shirts to go under blazers for work.

anyone got any suggestions of where to look?

quirkychick · 27/08/2026 09:39

@turbomountain thanks to this thread, I've just bought a grey, sleeveless knitted cashmere jumper from Vinted! I have sold quite a few bits over the summer.

@Justonemorething82 love the skirt! I often find myself replacing things I used to have which I loved and wore loads.

dontcallmelen · 27/08/2026 11:45

SapphireSeptember · 26/08/2026 15:20

A silk circle skirt? Where? Do you have a link please?

I used to have a black one and wore it until it fell apart, they're really easy to wear.

sorry I don’t know how to link @SapphireSeptember the skirt is M&S autograph range.

anon2022anon · 27/08/2026 12:00

@Cantonet oh interesting! Have you had it long? How is the material holding up, any bobbling?
I accidentally bought a jacket in TK Maxx, a muted red, blue and yellow check bomber

I need to be a bit more adventurous in my clothes. I only wear jeans, jumpers and boots and when I look at other people's choices they seem quite outlandish for me so I'm stuck.

I’m very similar. I wfh and am very active with a dog to walk as well so it’s either warm practical layers or sportswear. I do have a penchant for woolly knots though - nothing beats real wool for warmth.

Cantonet · 27/08/2026 12:32

I haven't worn it yet.
I do have two Nicole Farhi coats from last year that have worn really well. One is 80% wool and 10% cashmere and its beautiful. I think the other is 80% wool and I wore it all winter. It still looks perfect.

I also wfh and am pretty active, so practical is definitely a priority for me! Your clothes need to fit with your lifestyle. You might prefer classic or casual clothes as your personsl style. I wear practical clothes, but like things that can be more "out there" as well.

MissyB1 · 27/08/2026 13:00

I’m looking on Vinted for a long chocolate brown wrap coat, either wool or wool mix. Lots of tan colour but struggling to find a nice dark brown one.

Squiffy01 · 27/08/2026 13:01

Love this thread!

I’m really struggling to find my new style since having a child (8 years ago 😂)

after never owning a pair of trousers in my life I purchased a few pairs of wide leg ones over the summer and it opened up a whole new world! Are wide leg trousers a thing in winter or not so much?

I have so many nice dresses that I really need to get rid of as they are more for going out and I don’t go out these days and a bit short for me really.

I’m a nanny so really needs to be practical I just don’t know what I want! End of last summer I purchased a sweaty Beaty navy long raincoat and I’m still in love with so looking forward to wearing that again.

Melancholyflower · 27/08/2026 13:32

mrschocolatte · 26/08/2026 17:28

I have always wanted a camel coloured winter coat so took the plunge and invested in one from Cos.

Cos

I’ve also got a new jumper and black jeans winging their way to me, from M&S

Jumoer

Jeans

Love that jumper! Annoyingly it doesn't say what size the model is wearing, so it's hard to work out whether to size up or if it's quite oversized already.

Justonemorething82 · 27/08/2026 08:05

I bought this skirt from M&S - navy asymmetric pinstripe that’s very similar to one I had 20 years ago. I look forward to digging out my tights soon!

https://www.marksandspencer.com/pinstripe-midi-asymmetric-skirt/p/clp61247191?color=NavyMix&intid=mobile_app_pdp_share

Oh bugger, I really really like that......

dontcallmelen · 27/08/2026 16:13

That’s the one, thank you just realised it doesn’t come in petite length option which is a shame.p
