Is it a bit dated to turn up skinny jeans?

I bought a pair of skinny jeans , they fit great but are a bit too long. Just wondering would it look stupid if I just turned them up. I feel like it might look a bit naff or dated.

Both skinny jeans and skinny jeans with turnups are dated.

Passionfruit91 · 30/04/2026 23:23

I still love skinny jeans though, I don't find any other ones as flattering

IME they are only dated if you are under 30. I am in my 40’s and plenty of other 40 year olds are still wearing skinny jeans. I have an arrangement of different style jeans. In all honesty I the ones my 16 year olds daughter thinks I look better / more fashionable in, I feel a bit ridiculous - the style looks fab on her but I’m not 16!

Nothing dates your look quicker than your jeans. Skinny jeans will come back but in the meantime why don’t you try some straight cut jeans, assuming barrel or wide leg are a bridge too far.

Wingingitbestican · 01/05/2026 00:40

I’m late 40’s and live in my skinny jeans 😀

Gettingbysomehow · 01/05/2026 01:09

Are you sure they are flattering? A lot of people round here wear them and they arent flattering at all.

StarlightLady · 01/05/2026 06:14

I don’t often wear jeans, l’m very much a “dresses girl”, l love my dresses, but l’m very much in a minority. Likewise, if you like skinny jeans, rock them! I think that with jeans anything goes at the moment.

This, I cringe at 99% of them, most people who think they look flattering are just stuck in a rut.
They are not good.

awayhay · 01/05/2026 06:18

As others have said, they are (unfortunately) dated atm anyway, so I wouldn’t worry about turning them up x

WoahThreeAces · 01/05/2026 06:40

I turn up my jeans, my daughter is horrified 🤣 yes, it is dated. As are skinny jeans. But I don't really know what that means, or care - I never look at someone wearing skinny jeans and think woah they look like they should be in 2010.

But as the question was "is it a bit dated" - as I understand it (regularly told by my teenager) skinny jeans are OUT and turn ups are horrific.
(I wear both)
Hope this helps 😁

Charlenedickens · 01/05/2026 06:47

Both op, I’m sorry, skinny and turnups on them it’s a very dated look, and whatever your age, someone bizzarely said not if you’re over 30, that’s not correct. They have been out of fashion for quite a few years now.

however if you like them, just wear them, but you did ask. Many Jean styles are current at the moment, wide leg, barrel being the most Fashionable, but straight is still in and there is a small move to cigarette but you don’t see them much, and cropped, but skinny is very dated now.

im in my fifties, I wear wide leg, my daughter in her twenties was like that’s really ageing you when in my skinnies , so I bought a pair of wide leg trousers, and thought wow, these look great, and I then moved to my jeans are also wide leg.

the trick is to get them for your body shape. I’m tallish and slim, so for me it is fitted round the hips and upper leg, then moving to a wide shape but not too wide, and it’s just a hugely flattering look.

I still habe my skinnies and when I put them on I think oh that’s not a good look. If I’m honest when I still see them about, there are very few of us who can carry them off, many turnip legs around.

so if you love them wear them, but if you wish to be current I’d undertake the horrifi exercise of trying on many different pairs and see how you feel. You maybe surprised.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 01/05/2026 06:49

Try skinny flares That's what im into atm. They are tight ish at the bum and thighs then flare out.

newornotnew · 01/05/2026 06:50

If skinny jeans look good on you, it's fine to still wear them.

There are three types of people IMO - those who focus on trends, those who focus on what they like/what looks good on them, and those who don't think about it at all. Each approach is valid.

Skinny jeans have always been around and will never completely disappear because they are just tight jeans! Just as on any given day someone somewhere will have a pair of flares on.

Turn ups are also never unacceptable, because they are just a classic thing.

So I say go ahead and wear them, however you like.

MaryBeardsShoes · 01/05/2026 06:51

I am always surprised by the attitude on here because I think skinny jeans look great (on other people; I look shite in everything).

PrioritisePleasure24 · 01/05/2026 06:54

Skinny jeans are still widely available in shops so people are obviously still wearing them. Who cares. If you are comfy in them wear them. I can’t i have curvy calves and they look daft so i wore straight cut. Currently wearing bootcut flare and wide legged. I’m 47 ( nearly)

Namechangedforthisoneyep · 01/05/2026 06:56

You’ll have to prize my skinny jeans off my cold dead legs.

Id rather wear what suits me than look like a sheep clone.

Other jeans look awful on me.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 01/05/2026 06:58

Can’t you just take them up? Or use wonder web? I like skinnies too.

The OP presumably cares as that’s what her question is. Will she look dated.

if you like them; wear them. What does it matter what other people think?

LadyVioletBridgerton · 01/05/2026 07:16

Where whatever you like and feel comfortable in. I love my skinny jeans. I don’t like the current styles.

sunsettosunrise · 01/05/2026 07:18

I still have a black pair from years ago (I dont have the heart to bin them!) that I wear occasionally in the winter in a casual setting but I spruce it up a bit - nice boots, smart top etc. I think skinnies with a t-shirt or sweatshirt would look dated.

MrsDoubtfire123 · 01/05/2026 07:21

Just wear what you like , how you like 👍🏻

ClairDeLaLune · 01/05/2026 07:22

I’m so glad I’m 60 and dgaf about what’s dated and what isn’t (tbf I didn’t care much when I was younger either). Just wear what you want OP.

Divebar2021 · 01/05/2026 07:25

It is possible to buy slim jeans that have some tapering but also have a little ease through the leg that look slightly more contemporary than skinny jeans. If I were wearing skinnies though I’d take them up because I cannot imagine turn ups look good in any way shape or form.
