Is it a bit dated to turn up skinny jeans?

I bought a pair of skinny jeans , they fit great but are a bit too long. Just wondering would it look stupid if I just turned them up. I feel like it might look a bit naff or dated.

Skinnies are already back. Wear them!

AltitudeCheck · 01/05/2026 07:30

I think it depends on the look you are going for (and the footwear)... Skinny jeans, DMs and a band Tshirt is pretty timeless. But pairing skinny jeans with current style trainers or tops might spoil the look.

@PrincessHoneysuckleTotally agree! For me these are the perfect bridge between my skinnies and wide legs. I think wide legs, barrel etc just don’t suit my shape and I feel short and dumpy in them, whereas the skinny flares give me some definition at the hips. Loving M and S Magic Slim Flares atm and have just ordered some flared jeggings to try.

Sourisblanche · 01/05/2026 08:15

I just bought some new skinny jeans from Levi and have been getting lots of compliments!

Wear what you like🤷‍♀️

I also wouldn’t be taking fashion advice from the generation who brought back the mullet 😅

This question comes up quite a bit saying skinny jeans are out, last time I made a real effort when I was out and about to see what different age women were wearing, and you know what, all ages were wearing skinny jeans, jeggings and leggings. I saw quite a few of the very young women in skinnies and leggings.

Some were very large, some not, some very slim women too but no one appeared to be one bit bothered by whether they were "in fashion" or not.

Wear what you like in the jeans world, if YOU like it and it's comfortable, who cares what anyone else thinks.

I'm a jeggings person but I do have a couple of pairs of straight leg jeans too.

You know what the “ Wear what you like “ brigade have become a slight scourge on this board. It goes without saying that anyone can wear what they like and I’m a big advocate for developing a personal style. If you ask the question “ is this a dated look” on here please don’t get offended if posters respond to the question. In my corner of the south east it’s a dated look. My sister wears skinny jeans and she is an attractive person who gives zero shits about fashion. She looks nice when she wears them but she does look dated. I rarely see anyone wear them locally and I dare say there is someone right now in East London looking immense in a pair but broadly speaking I’m not seeing them worn with any stylistic flare. Other regions may vary.

FartNRoses · 01/05/2026 09:35

Who on earth is saying they are dated???It’s just some ‘trends’ are more in at the moment! They are still being sold in the shops and a decent pair can look fine.
I’ve seen some horrors that some people post on this site so as far as I’m concerned we are living in a day and age where I feel you are free to wear whatever the hell you like.
You go right ahead OP and wear your jeans. You will look fab!

Both skinny jeans and skinny jeans with turnups are dated.

Not everyone feels the need to copy the style of others like a sheep. I find it a bit sad that people feel the need to buy into trends just because some arbitrary fashion rules tell them to. I love the way my legs and backside look in skinny jeans, I also find them really practical.

Nuttycoffee · 01/05/2026 09:55

I cut the bottoms of most of my trousers.
I really dont care what others think either.

bananaboats · 01/05/2026 10:00

I think some people are missing the point a bit, the OP asked the question are they dated & yes they are. Of course she can still wear them if she wants but it is a dated look.

Well skinnies was copying the trend of skinnies… just means you copy some trends and not others.

Nitgel · 01/05/2026 10:04

I think they can be classed as just a classic jeans look now. I do think the baggy jeans look is so.common now everyone looks the same

Holidaymodeon · 01/05/2026 10:05

crop them to ankle grazer or summer capri style and they'll be fashionable again

Nope. I wear them because they are comfortable, practical and flattering. A logical choice rather than a fashion choice.

Agree I would cut them off and have slightly frayed ends rather than turn them up. Especially for summer

Passionfruit91 · 01/05/2026 10:50

I'm in my 40s, have lived in skinny jeans my whole life. I bought a pair of them and a pair of slim ankle grazer jeans yesterday, the ankle grazer ones do nothing for me so they're going back but do like the skinny jeans, can't be bothered with having to get them altered though

Both op, I’m sorry, skinny and turnups on them it’s a very dated look, and whatever your age, someone bizzarely said not if you’re over 30, that’s not correct. They have been out of fashion for quite a few years now.

however if you like them, just wear them, but you did ask. Many Jean styles are current at the moment, wide leg, barrel being the most Fashionable, but straight is still in and there is a small move to cigarette but you don’t see them much, and cropped, but skinny is very dated now.

im in my fifties, I wear wide leg, my daughter in her twenties was like that’s really ageing you when in my skinnies , so I bought a pair of wide leg trousers, and thought wow, these look great, and I then moved to my jeans are also wide leg.

the trick is to get them for your body shape. I’m tallish and slim, so for me it is fitted round the hips and upper leg, then moving to a wide shape but not too wide, and it’s just a hugely flattering look.

I still habe my skinnies and when I put them on I think oh that’s not a good look. If I’m honest when I still see them about, there are very few of us who can carry them off, many turnip legs around.

so if you love them wear them, but if you wish to be current I’d undertake the horrifi exercise of trying on many different pairs and see how you feel. You maybe surprised.

Edited

Isn't that just another way of saying "bootcut"?

Do you not have a sewing machine?

Purplewarrior · 01/05/2026 11:01

I don’t think I have ever seen anyone turn up skinny jeans. Aren’t they just wrinkled at the ankles if too long?

Sounds like this pair might be way too long?
