Is it a bit dated to turn up skinny jeans?

I bought a pair of skinny jeans , they fit great but are a bit too long. Just wondering would it look stupid if I just turned them up. I feel like it might look a bit naff or dated.

Nope. I wear them because they are comfortable, practical and flattering. A logical choice rather than a fashion choice.

You are wearing them because when the trend started 25 years ago you followed it and continue to wear them now.

I don't think you're getting it.

Most people don’t

What?!?! I consider mine as essential as a microwave.

I have a sewing machine and use it regularly, I don't personally know anyone else that owns one.

I'm in my 40s, have lived in skinny jeans my whole life. I bought a pair of them and a pair of slim ankle grazer jeans yesterday, the ankle grazer ones do nothing for me so they're going back but do like the skinny jeans, can't be bothered with having to get them altered though

Have you really lived in skinny jeans your whole life? We're a similar age and I don't remember them at all in the late 90s? We were all wearing boot cuts that were too long and had a constant damp patch around the hem!

I agree with other posters. Of course it's absolutely fine to wear what you like and what you feel is flattering. However if the question is 'is it dated' then the answer is yes. Turn up or no turn up.

KarmenPQZ · 01/05/2026 11:27

As by others have said. Yes they can look fine. Yes you can still buy them in shops. Yes you don’t need to be a sheep and follow trends.

but to answer your actual question 100% skinny jeans are dated with or without turn ups.

FrLarryDuff · 01/05/2026 11:35

Skinnies are dated full stop, so it doesn’t really matter.

Brightonrockkk · 01/05/2026 11:36

Omg. OP Came on specifically asking if something looked dated. She didn't ask 'should I still wear them even though they are dated' which is the question most of you are answering. This is the style and beauty board. Can we please create a separate board for all of you lot to pat yourself on the back about how much you don't really care about style and beauty? It is brilliant you don't care about following trends, that's not really what the board is about though.

You are wearing them because when the trend started 25 years ago you followed it and continue to wear them now.

Things I can do in skinnies that I can't do in bootcuts:

  • wear Converse or similar sneakers with a rubber toe cap, secure in the knowledge that I won't catch my toe in the opposite trouser hem and fall flat on my face;
  • tuck them into boots;
  • wear them on a rainy day knowing that the hems won't drag in puddles;
  • cycle in them without the hem getting stuck in the chain;
  • wear them slightly too long, instead of having to shorten them to within a 1/4" goldilocks zone located between "too long, hits the floor" and "too short, flaps around my ankles".

And this is coming from someone who loves bootcuts. Objectively, skinnies are more practical.

Speakofthedevil · 01/05/2026 11:37

Yawn. Questions about skinny jeans get asked here every other hour, it seems. I'm constantly amazed there are people who STILL haven't noticed skinnies have been dated for the past decade at least.

And the answers are always the same. Yes, they're dated, 'you'd have to prise them off my dead cold legs', wear what you like, why do you care what others think, skinnies are awful and look shit on everyone, other jean shapes are awful and look shit on everyone, and 'I'm not a sheep, I wear what I like/suits me'. Take your pick.

Style isn't about trends and beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

This sounds odd to me.
I’ve never seen anyone other than a teenager or supermodel that was “flattered” by skinny jeans.

Im not convinced people know how they look from the side or the rear.

Yeah I do see that and regret the way I originally worded my post as soon as I sent it. It's just so many threads on here people completely ignore the question. OP comes on to ask 'is this flattering?' And gets told they shouldn't care if something is flattering they should just wear what they like. It hijacks all the threads and makes the whole place useles!

Cheesehound · 01/05/2026 11:40

I will live and die in my skinny jeans. Someone will have to prise them off my cold dead body.

The thing is, though, that past a certain age jumping on every trend also makes you look very dated, just in a different way. I wouldn't wear skinnies now but I also wouldn't wear the very exaggerated wide/ baggy legs on jeans that teenagers are - that's what I wore in the 90s and I'd have been absolutely horrified then if my mum tried to join in!

CharlotteSometimes1 · 30/04/2026 23:19

Both skinny jeans and skinny jeans with turnups are dated.

So are tea dresses from the 40s and Laura Ashley styles with flounces but there are so many around on sale.

This question comes up quite a bit saying skinny jeans are out, last time I made a real effort when I was out and about to see what different age women were wearing, and you know what, all ages were wearing skinny jeans, jeggings and leggings. I saw quite a few of the very young women in skinnies and leggings.

Some were very large, some not, some very slim women too but no one appeared to be one bit bothered by whether they were "in fashion" or not.

Wear what you like in the jeans world, if YOU like it and it's comfortable, who cares what anyone else thinks.

I'm a jeggings person but I do have a couple of pairs of straight leg jeans too.

Yes, I’d agree that they aren’t the most fashionable shape at the moment, but I’m not sure that something that is still very very widely worn by a range of ages can really be called “dated”.

If worn tucked into Ugg boots with a vest top with lace trim, and a long thin cardigan, then I’d called that overall a dated outfit. But there are about a hundred other ways to style them, plenty of which look more current.

Problem is that we can't judge "flattering" without seeing OP in the full outfit.

Me in skinnies with flat mary janes is a radically different look from me in skinnies with tall boots, or me in skinnies tucked into statement ankle boots.

Aliceinmunsnetland · 01/05/2026 11:49

Wear them as you want to OP, who cares what random strangers think?

ERthree · 01/05/2026 11:55

Skinny jeans are far nicer than barrel leg jeans, i have yet to see anyone look anything less than ridiculous in those.

I agree. It’s so tiresome on S&B when someone asks if something is on trend, dated, fashionable etc and loads of twits pipe up ‘just wear what you like’ 🤯

Weird that people are saying skinny jeans are dated. There are loads in the shops!

Switcher · 01/05/2026 12:04

Everyone likes what they wore when they were young. Fortunately for me, I was young in the 90s. But there's nothing wrong with deciding to wear what you like irrespective of whether it's currently fashionable.
