Is it a bit dated to turn up skinny jeans?

Passionfruit91 · 30/04/2026 23:17

I bought a pair of skinny jeans , they fit great but are a bit too long. Just wondering would it look stupid if I just turned them up. I feel like it might look a bit naff or dated.

Maybe you misunderstood the point being made, it wasn’t people should only agree, it was about people coming on and saying whay does it matter and not answering either way,

I did understand your point, I just don't think the conversation on an open forum will ever stay as narrow as you want it to. It happens on all sorts of threads - people discuss the premise of the original post/question.

I was a skinny devotee for years, but practically I live in leggings and wellies as I'm always out walking my dogs. Wide legs are no good for the mud and fields and they are draughty! I wear clothes with them that I like and that are practical, like a gilet with pockets for balls and poop bags. I do much prefer the newer shapes of wide jeans and boxy tops for going out in though.

Everything is in the shops lol, you name it and you can buy it. Being available doesn’t make it fashionable.

Who decides what is fashionable?

I have short legs and usually only buy jeggings as pull legs inside out, I don't sew and don't intend to start now so legs end up inside, bit annoying when they slip down

I don't understand what you mean here.

You can google that and educate yourself it’s a mix of fashion houses and cultural shifts at a high level. No judgment from me on not knowing, but best to spend time googling to educate yourself rather than ask strangers to educate you/

Do you not have a sewing machine?

I would guess that more people don't have a sewing machine than do have these days.

Educate myself? How patronising are you!

I think it was a rhetorical question… 🙄

You asked? How is it patronising to answer you? If you were being sarcastic or something then use an emoji, or write a longer sentence, but you literally asked who decided fashion, so I assumed you didn’t know how it worked.

It was. I mean there's no defined authority is there, on what's fashionable? Who dresses in the same way as people on the catwalk after all?

The catwalk filters down to the high street though, so actually everyone, eventually.

I love my skinny jeans and at 5'1" turn ups are obligatory, even in petite lengths.
Sod fashion.
Do you feel good? That is all that matters.
Wide legged and barrel, even straight legs swamp my frame and make me look like a kid playing dress up.
I'll never ditch the skinnies, shops are full of them so there must still be demand
Wear what makes you feel good.

Except, they obviously don’t make her feel good do they, as she suspects she’s looking dated, and is self conscious about it.
Sigh.

Also what shops are ‘full of skinny’s’. None that I visit, they may have one or two pairs in for the die hards but they certainly aren’t the majority in the denim departments.

I don’t understand how people can say that skinny jeans and trainers give an unflattering silhouette, but then be happy to wear skin tight leggings with trainers. Isn’t it the exact same silhouette?

I don’t think any one has said that, I’d assume tne people who are saying skinnies are unflattering are also not wearing leggings as general wear.

skinnies are unflattering though, I’m relatively tall, slim and toned. And wide leg or straight is much more flattering. Look at the images of Kate moss, even she looks way better,

I find fashion baffling. Is it some form of deep seated feeling of wanting to belong/conform?
Judging by some of the comments on here, it's just another stick women can beat each other with.

Fiddlesticks1 · Today 07:18

I have just discovered iron on hemming tape. It has revolutionised my wardrobe as I struggle to find trousers for myself so if you decide not to turn up you could do that. It’s very easy to use. Korbond hemming web £2.50 from Amazon in black or white.

Is suggesting people want to conform a criticism? It's a well known trait of human beings that a lot of our behaviours stem from the need to be accepted by the tribe. If we didn't do this back in the deep dark past, it meant we didn't get to eat.
The stakes are lower these days and I'm wondering why women buy into this collective belief that some ways are dressing are acceptable and others aren't is all. No stick here 🙂

Maybe you misunderstood the point being made, it wasn’t people should only agree, it was about people coming on and saying whay does it matter and not answering either way,

I think it's slightly more nuanced than that.

What some people are saying is body type can feed into what looks stylish.

If you look as though you have copied your 16 year old DD but have very much a Mum-body, you probably date yourself more in something very current but totally unflattering than by wearing something not hot off the shelves.

Also, looking "dated" can have more meanings than what just rolled off the latest shipments from the factories, and what is dated for one age crowd can be less dated for another: older people who buy better quality tend to keep things longer and wear them longer. You find this reflected in the brands too. Cheaper brands tend to change look faster; more mid-range upmarket (not talking haute couture, which also changes but not always in a particularly wearable direction!) often retains looks within its range longer and also comes a bit later to the party I think, having waited to see if a look has staying power before they roll it out in cashmere or silk. That sort of seasonal lag isn't necessarily necessarily dated, as much as conservative.

Gettingbysomehow · Today 11:48

I tried some on in Marks yesterday for the first time ever. They were just above the ankle size 10. They actually looked ok but as Im in my 60s I just wouldnt wear them

The OP cares. She asked if they are ‘naff or dated’. This is ‘Style and Beauty’. People are interested in fashion.

There is NO POINT saying ‘who cares’. Absolutely tedious and unhelpful.

I think you’ve maybe gone down a rabbit hole of conspiracy theory. Likely as you’re disgruntled as you’re not seen as current in your attire.

In reality it’s just we want to look good. That’s what fashion is. It’s a cultural shift to something people think look good. On us or other people.

becsuse we once thought something looked good, doesn’t mean we need to wear it forever more. Our tastes can change and evolve.

I will give you an example. I dislike barrel leg jeans, I have never seen a pair on anyone I thought looked good, so I never tried them. Today I was in H&M and saw a pair. More narrow barrel on the hanger. And I thought they look good. I will try them. And I did. And I genuinely Really liked the way they loooked on. They were hugely flattering. So I bought them. It’s the below and I thoroughly recommend them. I didn’t buy them as I want to be in some barrel leg cropped jeans tribe. I’m an intelligent woman. I bought them as I found them flattering on.
