Is it a bit dated to turn up skinny jeans?

I bought a pair of skinny jeans , they fit great but are a bit too long. Just wondering would it look stupid if I just turned them up. I feel like it might look a bit naff or dated.

OP posts:

fitted round the hips and upper leg, then moving to a wide shape but not too wide, and it’s just a hugely flattering look.

Isn't that just another way of saying "bootcut"?

No bootcut is very very different, that’s slim all the way to the bottom of the leg then flares out, to cover the boot, it’s not wider from the top of the leg.

Weird that people are saying skinny jeans are dated. There are loads in the shops!

Everything is in the shops lol, you name it and you can buy it. Being available doesn’t make it fashionable.

FredaMountfitchet · 01/05/2026 12:06

Dated ??
What does that even mean ?
Turned up skinny jeans showing a bit of tanned leg
Ankle strap sandal or bright coloured suede trainer or ballet pump
Top half floaty kaftan top or shirt in linen or subtle pastel
Big sunnies & straw bag
Just returned from very chic European resort & that’s all I saw on women of all sizes & ages .
Looked far better than the British women in their odd carrot leg or totally shapeless wide legs - a lot of which would have been worn because they didn’t want to look ‘dated ‘
Wear what you feel suits you and most importantly what you like .

Mine are relatively fitted to the knee, then flare out. The knee is a natural transition point for the change of fit.

I take your point, but there must be enough people buying them to make it worthwhile.

Brightandblustery · 01/05/2026 12:15

Everyone on here saying skinny jeans are dated will soon change their tune when the shops are full of them again (as predicted by Vogue for 2026). I always wore skinnies until I realised they made my stomach look huge (against my skinny legs). I switched to wide leg and look so much better. Presumably wide leg jeans will be "unfashionable" soon so I'm stocking up on my favourites and will wear them regardless. Then again I have tattoos and facial piercings so "fashionable" gets the middle finger from me.

selffellatingouroborosofhate · 01/05/2026 12:20

So, trying to answer the OP's question: I cannot comment on "dated" because I'm not a WSGN analyst. And you all should watch this exposé of how much influence this one company has through their "predictions" driving global clothes manufacturing and retailing behaviours.

I can comment generally on stylishness. Unless you are at the beach going for a paddle in the sea, folding up your jeans says "I can't be bothered learning to sew or taking my clothes to the seamstress". This is true regardless of the cut of the jeans. It makes short legs look even shorter because of the interruption to what would otherwise be a single fall of fabric.

If my sewing machine broke down, I would hand-sew a proper alteration sooner than fold my jeans up.

Legoninjago1 · 01/05/2026 12:28

I never stopped wearing skinnies! I’m
middle aged, tall and a bit skinny, but loads of people wear them round here - more do than don’t actually . I really dislike the baggy jean look on me - to me it’s very 1990s! The absolute baggiest I’d go would be cigarette leg.

You can buy iron-on hemming tape...not as good as sewing (unless you are heming jeans for a growing child) but better than turn ups.

Not everyone dresses current, this thread would be the proof of that.

Charlenedickens · 01/05/2026 12:41

Eh no, vogue predicted wide and straight which is on the money . And the shops already have their spring summer stock in and as much as many carry skinny it is really not what they are pushing.

Tape tends to come unstuck in the wash. It's great for getting the length right prior to sewing the hem, and it doesn't break the machine needle, unlike pins.

Is that a butterfly nun's wimple, in black, on that centre model?

Omg. OP Came on specifically asking if something looked dated. She didn't ask 'should I still wear them even though they are dated' which is the question most of you are answering. This is the style and beauty board. Can we please create a separate board for all of you lot to pat yourself on the back about how much you don't really care about style and beauty? It is brilliant you don't care about following trends, that's not really what the board is about though.

The OP followed up with: I still love skinny jeans though, I don't find any other ones as flattering which is why so many people have said don't worry about whether they are considered dated.

The board is Style and Beauty, not Fashion and Beauty - things deemed 'dated' are not automatically unstylish, even if they are unfashionable.

lindyloo57 · 01/05/2026 14:18

I still wear skinnys for dog walks , not out and about so much, I don't find them as comfortable as I used to, now at 65 I feel more comfortable in a bootcut, I can't find a wide leg to suit me, I am only 5ft2 there's much fabric, I do have the marks and spencer wide leg jeans with the front pockets from last year, now I wish I had brought more colours, they don't seem to the same style this year.do love a wide leg summer trouser, it's winter I struggle as this winter tried to wear jeans less, but couldn't find a winter trouser I liked.

That’s true, but I think you need ti have a certain type of unique style to wear dated outfits and make it looo stylish, your average woman donning a pair of skinnies won’t fall into that bracket.

GameOfJones · 01/05/2026 14:37

It's a difficult one because I'm firmly in the "wear what you want" camp but your question was are they dated and the answer is yes.

Now, you may not care and that's great. I'm not a follower of trends either so if you like them despite them being a dated look then go for it.

I'm quite glad there's so much more variety of jeans shapes nowadays purely as I was pretty fat for most of the last 20 years so didn't wear skinnies at all as they looked absolutely horrendous on me!

Mostly what people deem stylish or unstylish is just projected preference, and some people's preferences are set for them by the fashion industry.

So a person who is afraid of looking 'dated' will look negatively upon someone wearing something they deem 'dated' and badge it unstylish.

They're not an objective judge, I think none of us is objective, because we are all running everything through our own biased heads.

What we think of other people's choices is closely connected to what we think about that choice for us.

Hmmm not sure I agree, I think you’re maybe just reacting as you don’t like that clothes become dated and resent it.

fashion, dressing current has always been a thing, stylish is not directly correlated, but very few people can turn up in dated clothing and look stylish by any mainstream definition, doesn’t mean they don’t look nice or whatever

im also not sure it’s fear, I don’t want to dress dated, it’s not I’m scared to be dated, it’s not that deep, but I’m in my fifties, and dressing dated is very ageing. I want to look current and fresh, and yes stylish, of course. I don’t need to don a knee length skirt, skinny jeans or something else dated to look stylish. It’s an illogical thought, and as said I think it’s borne out of resentment. Rather than reality.

Oxo01 · 01/05/2026 15:33

If you like them wear them
Turn them up inside so it does not show ?

TheCurious0range · 01/05/2026 16:22

I'm in the office today and most people are dressed down as we're out straight from work to the pub, most of the women under 30 are in skinny jeans, the youngest is 23. I'm in wide leg and so is my colleague we are both in our 40s. I noticed this morning and thought it was interesting

Moveoverdarlin · 01/05/2026 16:25

Depends on your footwear I think. Skinny jeans and high heels looks dated. But skinny jeans with cool trainers still look good imo, same as gladiator sandals, if you’re slim, I love that look. Kate Moss still wears tight, skinny black jeans with ballet pumps or gladiator sandals and she pulls it off.

There's a bit of a "dark skinny jeans are fine with a nice top for a medium-conservative office" thing that's not really gone away over the past decade. I wore dark barrel leg jeans to work today with a stripy top and bright red trainers. Slightly evoking Smee from Peter Pan, admittedly, and I work in media so there is no dress code, but I did notice that the younger ones were in the floral maxi dresses that I can't wear any more without feeling weird/stuck in 2019, or skinnies. I'm in my 40s.

We all concluded that dressing for a warm, rainy spring in the UK is a nightmare.

Coffeecakeandspice · 01/05/2026 16:59

This year a more tailored look is in, like bootleg or fitted flares. Maybe one of those?
