Is it a bit dated to turn up skinny jeans?

Passionfruit91 · 30/04/2026 23:17

I bought a pair of skinny jeans , they fit great but are a bit too long. Just wondering would it look stupid if I just turned them up. I feel like it might look a bit naff or dated.

OP posts:

I have short legs and usually only buy jeggings as pull legs inside out, I don't sew and don't intend to start now so legs end up inside, bit annoying when they slip down

Hmmm not sure I agree, I think you’re maybe just reacting as you don’t like that clothes become dated and resent it.

fashion, dressing current has always been a thing, stylish is not directly correlated, but very few people can turn up in dated clothing and look stylish by any mainstream definition, doesn’t mean they don’t look nice or whatever

im also not sure it’s fear, I don’t want to dress dated, it’s not I’m scared to be dated, it’s not that deep, but I’m in my fifties, and dressing dated is very ageing. I want to look current and fresh, and yes stylish, of course. I don’t need to don a knee length skirt, skinny jeans or something else dated to look stylish. It’s an illogical thought, and as said I think it’s borne out of resentment. Rather than reality.

I didn't mean YOU feel fear, it was just an example of the psychological process - judgements we make are rooted in feelings about ourselves more than the other person, judgements we make are based on what we think is correct for us.

I'm no different to anyone else - which means if you think I 'resent' things, you presumably accept other people do too. Which is basically what I'm saying - people's views are not objective, they are about themselves.
When you say dressing dated is very ageing. I want to look current and fresh - yes, exactly, something about that matters to you psychologically, it isn't so much about the clothes as the person.

All those people who think this, that or the other is stylish - it's meaningless IMO. If someone they admired wore a thing, they'd be more likely to badge it stylish than if someone they didn't admire wore it. If an item aligns with what they already think is correct then it will appeal to them psychologically.

Markovenchip · 01/05/2026 17:51

Maybe a dry cleaners that does alterations could shorten them professionally for you, if not I'm sure they'll look great if you turn them up yourself, don't worry about feeling self conscious, being a 65 year old male, I not only wear skinny jeans, they're ripped too , and I love 'em !.......😊

Gizzywizzywoo · 01/05/2026 17:52

Why care what others think? Wear what you like and what your comfy in
All this dated/out of fashion malarky is just another thing to worry about for some
47 here and will always wear skinny jeans over baggy jeans as its what i like

TreacleMoon · 01/05/2026 19:34

If you like them, you like how they look, then please wear them, who cares about what's in or out, it all subjective at the end of the day. As a woman in her 50's who has worried all of her life about what others think, I've now hit a 'I do not care' era - it's liberating and absolutely wonderful!
Put those jeans on my darling and you enjoy them!

Chiefangel · 01/05/2026 21:21

I live in the Midlands and loads of women are still wearing skinny jeans. Just wear what the hell you like. I don’t understand fashion police judging us all.

Thesleepycat · 01/05/2026 21:24

I love wearing a pair of skinny jeans and nice tunic top. I don’t think it looks dated at all. And if anyone thinks so that’s their problem not mine.

IME they are only dated if you are under 30. I am in my 40’s and plenty of other 40 year olds are still wearing skinny jeans. I have an arrangement of different style jeans. In all honesty I the ones my 16 year olds daughter thinks I look better / more fashionable in, I feel a bit ridiculous - the style looks fab on her but I’m not 16!

I agree with this.

Some of the current styles such as wide leg and barrel legs are good for older ladies with heavy thighs, but for those with legs still in good shape, it's often hiding a really good feature!

Fine if you have the waist of q 16 year old: you can afford to hide your slim legs, but many mums don't.

canyon2000 · 01/05/2026 21:33

I went out tonight and noticed that nearly all the gorgeous young women were wearing very low cut skinny flares with cropped tops. Definitely not a look I will be wearing!

CortieTat · 01/05/2026 22:07

It’s not a yes/no question. Dated as in not currently featured at fashion shows? Yes. Dated as in “do I look dated?” Maybe. It depends on the rest of the outfit and accessories. One garment can be styled in endless ways, plus a lot depends on quality and fit.

somanychristmaslights · 01/05/2026 22:11

I wear my skinny jeans as I don’t let other people dictate to me what I can and can’t wear. If you want to turn them up, turn them up. Or see if you can get them altered.

I think people should get to a stage where they wear what suits them and not follow the latest trend, which, let's face it, often doesn't do everyone favours.

And that’s wonderful. But, it’s not what the OP asked. She’s asking for opinions on what’s in trend and what looks dated. You don’t care about that, but she does.

NewDogOwner · 01/05/2026 22:23

I love them but my DC said, 'Honey, no' !

TheOGCCL · 01/05/2026 22:26

I was out at the London marathon last week and searched high and low for someone wearing skinny jeans. I don't see many people wearing them these days at all, or loads on sale in the shops. They are a classic as they can be very practical and they had such a stronghold for so long, but they are not in fashion now and haven't been for a long time.

I used to wear skinnies all the time. I think they make a lot of people look top heavy and looking back that's what they do to me.

But to the actual question, I used to turn my skinnies under when they were too long to avoid having them shortened and turn ups.

Can someone please start a fashion thread so all the ‘wear what you want who cares what’s in fashion you stupid sheep’ gang can’t ruin every thread about clothes?
It is so incredibly tiresome.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · Yesterday 06:03

@NeelyOHaraHear hear! I’ll raise you the cos play devotees who think that’s style too! It’s impossible to talk about fashion without a group of the most unfashionable posters turning up who have worn the same clothes for 30 years and are proud of it! Yes, utterly tiresome.

And the "only looks good on a young, willowy , size 8 model" brigade

I find it mind boggling, someone comes on asks specifically if something is dated, and some folks think the right answer is who cares. seriously what an odd response.

Well clearly the op cares, or she’d not ask and that’s ok, people are allowed to want to look current. Not everyone wants to look like they are walking round like they are stuck in the past.

and if someone doesn’t care about looking current, why answer, just move on.

ConverselyAttired · Yesterday 07:09

I think the "Trending" section has a lot to answer for - some people (not the repeat offenders) don't realise they have wandered in from Chat or AIBU.

watchingthishtread · Yesterday 08:07

Turning them up won't make them any more or less dated.

'will X look dated?' followed by:

  • yes it will
  • no it won't
  • does dated matter anyway
  • wear what you like or what suits you
is a standard conversation about style choices people make.

You need a closed group of pre-vetted contributors if you only want the 'yes it will' responses!

Maybe you misunderstood the point being made, it wasn’t people should only agree, it was about people coming on and saying whay does it matter and not answering either way,

I love my skinny jeans and at 5'1" turn ups are obligatory, even in petite lengths.
Sod fashion.
Do you feel good? That is all that matters.
Wide legged and barrel, even straight legs swamp my frame and make me look like a kid playing dress up.
I'll never ditch the skinnies, shops are full of them so there must still be demand
Wear what makes you feel good.
