What's wrong with skinny jeans?

Nowimreallyworried · 08/03/2026 21:02

Just saw another thread about jeans and boots - and it occured to me that I've seen a fair few references both here and elsewhere that seemed to be saying that skinny jeans are now no longer fashionable. As in, quite outdated. Is that right?

I'm really not in to fashion per se but I do want to look at least presentable and nice. They're pretty much staple what I wear - with a t-shirt or jumper (not scruffy ones) and boots. Am I unwittingly making a faux pas??! Yikes!

A year and a bit? Good Lord. I need to walk round more, clearly.

I have a fear that wide legged trousers, jeans in particular, will make me look like a rectangle. I have a straight up and down waist so I can't see wide or barrels doing me any favours.

But, as mentioned, I already probably look a bit odd so I'm not ill be in any worse spot!

A year and a bit? People have been talking about skinny jeans being out of fashion for about a decade!
Personally I am delighted that looser leg boot cut jeans are back. Skinny jeans are not comfortable. And the jeans tucked into high boots look is even more dated. But who cares? Wear what you like.

As an approaching 50 year old curvy, short dumpling, I won't be signing up to wide legs. I'll wait till they go out of fashion.
My skinny jeans are not denim so very practical. I can hike in them etc

I can't for the life of me get proper bootcut jeans/kick flares, I've given up looking. They're all baggy from the thigh onwards, look stupid. In the old days they'd be slim fit past the knee then softly flare out - looked great with sandals in the summer.

Have a look at Levi’s 725.

Yes, but I can't say I love it. Reminds me of early 2000s

Im not going back to that, that’s what I wore as a teen! My skinnies are staying

Brightlittlecanary · 09/03/2026 07:49

It always makes me smile, people saying they are coming back. Sadly they are not, but folks say it every season, like a desperate wish. They have been out of fashion for some time op. When something swings this far away from something it generally takes a long time indeed to swing back and right now people are still embaracing the shape.

but flared, relaxed straight, barrel or wide leg is on trend, and the trick to wide leg is to get tnem fitting through the hips and upper thighs then widening, you need to try on lots of pairs to find the ones which work for your body. This isn’t a style that if it fits it works. This season it is not super wide.

however I agree with others if you like skinnies wear them.

i have these and fhey are super flattering on. Ones less fitted over the hips and upper legs do nothing for me and make me look like I’ve a flat arse and about two sizes bigger, where as my daughter looks great in them. So body shape is key,

I still wear mine with boots, and always with my wellies or country boots for dog walks. Can’t do that with a wide leg! I find them really comfy. I love my mum jeans but only wear them with trainers or sandals…

They’ve been unfashionable for so long (years) they might be coming back in fashion.

They shouldn't come back in fashion. They were so uncomfortable.

Nanda66 · 09/03/2026 07:52

They went out but are coming back in, worn with knee high boots. Although I suppose that will change as we come in to Spring.

You must’ve noticed, OP, that followers of fashion are no longer wearing skinnies? I can’t remember the last time I saw a friend wearing them, but it must be at least 2 years ago.

I really haven't. I mean, I've seen people wearing all sorts and recognise I suppose that wide legged varieties are popular - but I don't think I realised that skinnies were 'out'. I mean, I still wear them so people I know see someone wearing them all the time.

Well yes, but that is because they are practical to wear on a dog walk, which has nothing to do with fashion. I wear fleece and Goretex when I walk my dog, that doesn't mean I think they are in fashion!

Nowimreallyworried · 08/03/2026 21:05

Really?? Oh Lord. I honestly don't think I look bad in them? They're just jeans?

Well. Time to go shopping I guess. Why are we supposed to wear instead?

Basically, every style of jean is on sale and acceptable, but there will be plenty of people vouching for their preferred style.
Wear what you like and suits you and your lifestyle.

How are you supposed to wear boots then? Or are they out as well?

Notwithstanding the shift in fashions I was fine with wearing them until about a year ago when I put them on and just felt ridiculous for some reason. I’m now in wide(r)leg jeans which means a change in footwear but they feel a lot more current.

MaryBeardsShoes · 09/03/2026 07:59

According to mumsnet skinny jeans have been over for a long time but have you seen the fugly things that are recommended on some style and beauty threads. IRL lots of people are still wearing them because they are practical and look good as part of certain outfits.

HairwEGo · 09/03/2026 08:01

I still love my skinny jeans and probably even worse to the fashionistas.... jeggins!! Like so many on here with boots and wellies and walking boots etc its just practical

However I did (around a year ago) get the memo about skinny jeans and bought some wider leg and barrel style jeans. Hardly wore them. Went out in Liverpool for the day this weekend with the wide leg jeans and trainers on and felt like the bottom of my jeans were on the grubby floor all day felt disgusting!

A pointed toe boot looks great under wide leg jeans.

They make your bum look like one wide bum cheek.

Iffytimes · 09/03/2026 08:04

I wear skinny jeans and don’t like wide ,barrelled or flares . So unflattering on most shapes!

I think this might be the key - I think they probably do suit my body type, and I'm not sure other styles will so much (I'm terrible with 'pulling together' an outfit so wouldn't really know what to wear with wider legs). That's probably why I've stuck with them so long and haven't paid much attention to anything else.

I will try out some things though, it will be interesting if nothing else - I am nothing if not predictable with what I wear so it will be certainly fun to see what new styles can offer.

A long boot or an ankle one?

YourSassyPanda · 09/03/2026 08:07

Yes, skinnies are over (for now!). I have a lovely pair of wide legged jeans I wear a lot with a blazer which are probably more flattering on my short legs but it’s a much more casual look than the faithful skinnies and heels.

Weeelokthen · 09/03/2026 08:09

They're still better than those barrell monstrosities 😂

SuperGinger · 09/03/2026 08:10

Actually totally disagree that skinny jeans are the most flattering, they were always awful. Wearing them, especially with longer boots, is very aging.
