What's wrong with skinny jeans?

Nowimreallyworried · 08/03/2026 21:02

Just saw another thread about jeans and boots - and it occured to me that I've seen a fair few references both here and elsewhere that seemed to be saying that skinny jeans are now no longer fashionable. As in, quite outdated. Is that right?

I'm really not in to fashion per se but I do want to look at least presentable and nice. They're pretty much staple what I wear - with a t-shirt or jumper (not scruffy ones) and boots. Am I unwittingly making a faux pas??! Yikes!

You’ll have to pull my skinnies out of my cold dead hands before I give them up Grin

I also tend to wear them when I’m gardening, walking the dogs or sorting the horses and I can wear with boots. Wide leg, boot or any other leg just gets messy and wet at the bottom. So yes, it’s often a lifestyle thing.

Vogue ran an article last month saying that leggings are all over the catwalk and coming back into fashion……

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 09/03/2026 08:11

I’ve not worn skinny jeans since about 2015 - we moved to this house in the June and in the photos of moving day I am in Topshop mom jeans. I’m a pear shaped size 12 and looked awful in skinnies so was probably an early adapter! I love barrel legs and slouchy straight/wide legs. Yesterday I saw a woman in true blue skinnies, trainers and a sweater and thought she looked really out of place - I think a black skinny jean with long boots is probably better if you are still in skinny jean mode.

Off topic but I never see B&S fans in the wild (except at their gigs, obvs).

For the easily influenced, a certain type of jeans become unfashionable if a celebrity or influencer tells them they are. The majority wear what they like.

Floisme · 09/03/2026 08:18

I think it's funny that so many people now say skinnies are flattering because, when they last came back into fashion, (around 2000 or very soon after) you'd have struggled to find anyone making that claim. Skinnies were difficult and risky and that was the point. They were rock n' roll and Kate Moss. Fast forward and now it's all about how easy they are to wear when you're walking the dog and their patron is the Princess of Wales.

My prediction is that skinnies will be back in fashion when people are looking at them and shouting 'Are you kidding me, I'm never wearing that!'

KitsyWitsy · 09/03/2026 08:20

I don't usually wear trousers or jeans at all but I was in America recently and it was bloody freezing so I bought some jeans at Macy's. They are Levis and skinny so people must still be buying them! I don't like any kind of wide leg or bulk on me at all so skinny is the way. Don't give a bloody toss whether anyone thinks I'm unfashionable!

Wendywooooo · 09/03/2026 08:21

I think an influenza decided skinny jeans were dated and a load of others jumped on.

Nothing wrong with them, sometimes good to wear other ones, but you're not gonna look totally out of place wearing them at all

Nowimreallyworried · 09/03/2026 08:23

latetothefisting · 09/03/2026 00:35

There's no logic to this argument. The shops are full of lots of things that aren't fashionable - because lots of people don't care that much about fashion. I could go into any shop and buy big fleece or fishnet tights or a pair of wellies - that doesn't mean they are peak fashion, just that there are enough people who want to wear those things.

I don't know why people are taking it as a personal affront. It's just a fact. Fashion is cyclical. Skinny jeans have been 'out' for at least 5 years. That doesn't mean there's anything wrong with them or that you'll look bad or that people will be mocking you as you walk down the street. Just that you won't look on trend if you wear them.

(OP I'm going to hazard a guess you aren't ready to hear about trainer socks, maxi dress, denim jacket, uniqlo bag and white trainers, either!)

😂. I'm ready to hear it! I actually did notice this last summer, I just haven't ever really been able to pull them off. My body type does NOT befriend a jacket, much as I'd like it to - and I tend to look pregnant/tubular in dresses as I carry a lot of weight around my ribs and back and belly. It wish it weren't so!

What I DO have are long legs though so I think that might be why I'm so attached to skinnies. It's true that to compensate I wear bigger jumpers and long tops but wearing wide legs might actually be making the slimmest part of me wider. On purpose. As I said I'm not a fashionista, but that seems unwise to me.

How are you supposed to wear boots then? Or are they out as well?

Boot cut is fashionable now which gives a clue...though when the original boot cut was in, the boots were all ankle or Chelsea boots. Knee high boots are not 'in' at all, unless they are the loose type worn with skirts or dresses I believe. The fitted, zip up type boots over trousers look is really dated. But again, who cares? Wear what you want.

Extolling the virtues of a style because it's practical and lets you do gardening or hike through wet grass is exemplary of why they aren't fashion! Fashion isn't meant to be practical. Once a garment is chosen because it allows you to perform a physical task more easily then it's removed from the universe of fashion.

Nowimreallyworried · 09/03/2026 07:55

I really haven't. I mean, I've seen people wearing all sorts and recognise I suppose that wide legged varieties are popular - but I don't think I realised that skinnies were 'out'. I mean, I still wear them so people I know see someone wearing them all the time.

You clearly don’t have a daughter between 16 and 25, viewing skinny jeans with contempt 😏

BookedNoRefund · 09/03/2026 08:42

I spent the 2000s loving my skinny jeans and knee high boots, or ballet flats in summer. Kate Moss rocked the look of course. It would feel odd for me to wear that look again now. But give it time!

MyUnderpants · 09/03/2026 08:44

I've got those and a pair of Hudson jeans that are almost identical except I bought the latter in about 2012 and don't look worm out.

@Minnie798 @notmuchtoit
Oh I love my barrel jeans! I've got a pair that are a more subtle barrel cut (not the super extreme barrel) and I really love them, they are so, so flattering! And a nice new change in style.

Edited

@Helpiscomingwhich barrel legs do you have please? I love my barrel legs work trousers they just work on my leg shape and I'm in need of new jeans so tempted to try them.

Mine too, she’s 28, I bought a pair of skinnies from Amazon, tried them on when she was home and she shook her head and said too skinny, I was like what do you mean, and she said you maybe the last human on earth to wear them. 😂

so I bought some Reiss wide legged trousers on vinted to try and thought I love these, so comfy and flattering . And since then it’s been a bit trial and error, anything too wide or not fitted through ghe hips doesn’t work on me, and now all my trousers and jeans are a wider fitting.

but I’m quite tall and slim, with long legs, when I was heavier it would have been harder to pull off, but then arguably we all used to say the same about skinnies, they were the drainpipes of the past and everyone reacted the same with there is no way I’m wearing them. I think it’s getting used to the shape.

TheOGCCL · 09/03/2026 08:50

I don’t think you can have it both ways on this.

Some people and I count myself in this are effectively fashion victims. We notice what’s changing pretty quick and we start to feel wrong. I notice now far more than I did 10 years ago how very few people actually suit them, and once you’ve moved on to looser shapes they can feel pretty restrictive. Skinny jeans have not been a fashionable aesthetic since before the pandemic, which really killed them off for a lot of people due to all the sitting around and putting on weight.

But I’d say if you haven’t picked up on this OP until now, you must be in the other camp, happy to wear what you like and (still) feel comfortable in. Switching up
jeans does then often require different tops and boots, that’s how they get you.

RaraRachael · 09/03/2026 08:53

I've just carried on wearing my skinny jeans as I couldn't care less about fashion. I wouldn't be see dead in the current styles of wide leg, carrot and whatever hideous styles are deemed currently fashionable.

Nicecatneighbour · 09/03/2026 08:53

Just wear whichever you like best. My jeans are all straight leg as I find skinnies too warm and wide leg anything swamp me. It's only fashion. Fewer people than you think actually care about what others are wearing.

Myblueclematis · 09/03/2026 08:57

I see loads of young women wearing leggings which look just like skinny jeans to me.

I wear jeggings with boots in the winter mainly because I have very slim legs and they don't have a button or zip in them which I prefer. I also find them really comfortable. I don't think wide leg or any of the other types of jeans mentioned would suit me at all.

I only ever wear them with long jumper/cardigan and/or jacket as I don't like not having my backside covered.

I do have two pairs of straight leg jeans which I mainly wear in the summer and four or five pairs of cropped different colour jeggings that I practically live in.

I'm obviously not fashionable but I really don't care.

The venom in there really does make it sound like you care an awful lot 😂

Actually totally disagree that skinny jeans are the most flattering, they were always awful. Wearing them, especially with longer boots, is very aging.

Or simply a different style to the one that flatters you?

Placestogo · 08/03/2026 22:45

The problem with barrel and carrot legs is that past 50yo, they just look like you’re trying to hard to dress like them young ones.

I’d rather wear my skinny jeans and show my age!

They really don’t. Past 50yo wearing skinny jeans look like they are stuck in a time warp. They rarely flatter anyone, unless they are tall with slim legs.

A very quick search found this: every style is in, is my takeaway message.
(Edited to add: skinny are called drainpipe here)

I went to a uni offers day recently and the trendy girls were all wearing very wide leg jeans. To be honest they looked a bit ridiculous even on the young slim ones. I think they'll look back at their uni photos and realise that is didn't look great, but it doesn't matter. It's just fashion. Wear what you like and what looks good on you.
