What's wrong with skinny jeans?

Just saw another thread about jeans and boots - and it occured to me that I've seen a fair few references both here and elsewhere that seemed to be saying that skinny jeans are now no longer fashionable. As in, quite outdated. Is that right?

I'm really not in to fashion per se but I do want to look at least presentable and nice. They're pretty much staple what I wear - with a t-shirt or jumper (not scruffy ones) and boots. Am I unwittingly making a faux pas??! Yikes!

You must’ve noticed, OP, that followers of fashion are no longer wearing skinnies? I can’t remember the last time I saw a friend wearing them, but it must be at least 2 years ago.

I can't for the life of me get proper bootcut jeans/kick flares, I've given up looking. They're all baggy from the thigh onwards, look stupid. In the old days they'd be slim fit past the knee then softly flare out - looked great with sandals in the summer.

I have these. Don’t know if they fulfil the brief. They are fabulous.

Whats in or out of fashion is a way of selling more stuff we don't need. If you've got skinny jeans in your wardrobe - wear them, don't waste money on ugly barrel jeans which are 'in' , as they will soon be 'out'. It's ridiculous the amount of lightly worn clothes that are sent to landfill. It's all a marketing ploy, don't waste your money.

I haven't sent my skinnies to landfill, they're in the loft waiting for when they're back in!

Didntask · 08/03/2026 22:43

Love my skinnies. They'll have to prise them off my cold, hard body tbh. I do have some boot cuts, wide/palazzo style jeans too but #skinniesforlife.

Floisme · 08/03/2026 22:44

I don’t like them but I must admit I do quite enjoy a skinny jeans thread because they’re always full of posters insisting they’re not interested in fashion, oh no not they, but look, look, here’s an article in Vogue that says they’re coming back.

Placestogo · 08/03/2026 22:45

The problem with barrel and carrot legs is that past 50yo, they just look like you’re trying to hard to dress like them young ones.

I’d rather wear my skinny jeans and show my age!

heartsinvisiblefury · 08/03/2026 22:48

I wear them with my wellies or boots when dog walking as baggy jeans just get soaking wet and are so impractical.

Denim4ever · 08/03/2026 22:49

Skinny jeans are the style that the fashion industry can't kill off no matter how many times they try. It was similar with straight jeans when bootcuts were the thing.

Currently straight and skinny are in comeback mode. The latter is not quite in full revival mode yet but it probably will be next winter.

Happyjoe · 08/03/2026 23:06

Thankyou, they look nice but these are exactly what am talking about. They're baggy jeans with wider bottoms really. I do however adore the front pockets, cute as!

This! I never wore skinnies but the shops are still full of them so how can they be "out"? I've worn boot cut since forever and couldn't care less if they are in fashion or not, they are the only jeans which actually suit my legs. Honestly people ditching perfectly good clothing because it is no longer in fashion is madness, not to mention so bad for the planet. When I was young we didn't really know better, now we do there is no excuse!

Mumof1andacat · 09/03/2026 00:01

TBH it's just fashion trends. Never really liked skinny jeans. Legs are too chunky. I've always gone for a straight cut. Would rather wear what I like and what suits.

There's no logic to this argument. The shops are full of lots of things that aren't fashionable - because lots of people don't care that much about fashion. I could go into any shop and buy big fleece or fishnet tights or a pair of wellies - that doesn't mean they are peak fashion, just that there are enough people who want to wear those things.

I don't know why people are taking it as a personal affront. It's just a fact. Fashion is cyclical. Skinny jeans have been 'out' for at least 5 years. That doesn't mean there's anything wrong with them or that you'll look bad or that people will be mocking you as you walk down the street. Just that you won't look on trend if you wear them.

(OP I'm going to hazard a guess you aren't ready to hear about trainer socks, maxi dress, denim jacket, uniqlo bag and white trainers, either!)

Edited

When shops which specifically are dedicated to selling jeans have masses of skinny jeans it isn't quite the same as shops which might have a few fleeces or fishnet tights - and what fashion stores sell wellies??? I don't see many fleeces for sale, next to no fishnet tights, but skinnies - loads of them.

Ahem Vogue says they're back
https://www.vogue.co.uk/article/how-to-wear-skinny-jeans-90s-noughties-muses

Wear whatever jeans you want!

Most of the pics with that article are not old school skinnies - they’re skinny with varying degrees of flare. There are only a couple of true skinnies.

The truth about skinnies is that unless you’re really slim other jean styles are more flattering. Not necessarily wide leg, as those can be unflattering too.

Look at skinny boyfriends, skinny kick flares, even Levi’s 501s which are back.

Morepositivemum · 09/03/2026 06:54

They’re still about though so it’s not like when bootcut jeans disappeared from everywhere! I think fashion is a lot more chilled now, allowing people to wear what they actually like.

PumpkinsAndCoconuts · 09/03/2026 07:02

They’re not in fashion but many people still wear them. Skinny (or slim) jeans/trousers plus boots are an unbeatable crappy weather combo imo. Especially with cozy thermals underneath.

Wearing jeans / trousers over boots leads to soaked jeans and defeats the purpose of boots imo.
And boots over wide legged trousers obviously isn’t an option either.

Minnie798 · 09/03/2026 07:03

Nothing wrong with skinny jeans. They are the most flattering fit for slim people.
Wearing clothes that make you feel at your best is more important than buying something just because it's ' on trend'. I won't be going near barrel leg.

Floisme · 09/03/2026 07:04

Actually where I am the shops (physical shops) are full of wide legs now. It’s been very noticeable this year - you can still find skinnies but you have to look. Even all the rain, when skinnies are more practical, hasn’t made a difference.

It’ll swing back for sure at some point but so many people have only just made the switch to a wider / looser leg and I don’t think they’re likely to make another big change so soon.

Anyway if we reach a point where you can’t buy skinnies any more then I’ll sympathise. But as long as you can buy them and if you don’t care whether or not they’re in fashion then I don’t see what the problem is,

MisMonaxo · 09/03/2026 07:17

I was actually browsing Next for some yesterday after being in St Tropez and Monaco. Loads of women wearing them there and they looked great.

It reminded me of how much they suit me and how confident I feel while wearing them and that's all that matters to be honest!

Next have quite a few in store and so do John Lewis (my local stores do anyway!)

I'm 5ft 3 and proportionally they look much nicer on me than wide leg jeans do.

Also Mint Velvet are selling some

They look a lot better than those awful barrel leg jeans.

@Minnie798 @notmuchtoit
Oh I love my barrel jeans! I've got a pair that are a more subtle barrel cut (not the super extreme barrel) and I really love them, they are so, so flattering! And a nice new change in style.

pinkpony88 · 09/03/2026 07:20

BiscoffCheesecakes · 08/03/2026 21:10

If i didn't wear skinny jeans I'd never get to wear my long boots. So they're staying

Yes this is what I think. I don’t like the wide leg ones but I have some bootcut which I love but I can’t tuck them in long boots so the only other jean option with long boots is skinnies. Also if I need to wear wellies they tuck in well too 😀

FreddysFingers · 09/03/2026 07:29

I've seen barrel leg jeans and trousers being sold, think they're 'of the moment'?

Yes they are having a moment and they did a few years ago as well. Some of them remind me of rickets / bow legs.

Dontcallmescarface · 09/03/2026 07:39

Nothing is wrong with skinny jeans I wear them all the time.

They really are hilarious. I saw a pair in the wild yesterday for the first time (I don’t exactly live in a fashion metropolis) and the poor woman looked like she had short and bandy legs, whereas in reality she had a fantastic figure.

If a size 10 looked bonkers in them, I’m not putting them anywhere near my fat arse 😂.
