What's wrong with skinny jeans?

Nowimreallyworried · 08/03/2026 21:02

Just saw another thread about jeans and boots - and it occured to me that I've seen a fair few references both here and elsewhere that seemed to be saying that skinny jeans are now no longer fashionable. As in, quite outdated. Is that right?

I'm really not in to fashion per se but I do want to look at least presentable and nice. They're pretty much staple what I wear - with a t-shirt or jumper (not scruffy ones) and boots. Am I unwittingly making a faux pas??! Yikes!

They really don’t. Past 50yo wearing skinny jeans look like they are stuck in a time warp. They rarely flatter anyone, unless they are tall with slim legs.

What's age got to do with it? Come on, let your fellow woman wear what she wants without being judged!
And as someone here who is past 50 years old who lives in skinnies, the wonderful thing with age is a, knowing what's comfy and suits you and b, not giving a toss what others think anymore.

You clearly don’t have a daughter between 16 and 25, viewing skinny jeans with contempt 😏

I don't 😂

I see loads of young women wearing leggings which look just like skinny jeans to me.

I wear jeggings with boots in the winter mainly because I have very slim legs and they don't have a button or zip in them which I prefer. I also find them really comfortable. I don't think wide leg or any of the other types of jeans mentioned would suit me at all.

I only ever wear them with long jumper/cardigan and/or jacket as I don't like not having my backside covered.

I do have two pairs of straight leg jeans which I mainly wear in the summer and four or five pairs of cropped different colour jeggings that I practically live in.

I'm obviously not fashionable but I really don't care.

I think you and I should be best friends. We can swap clothes.

They have been "out" for a very long time. I remember when DD1 was born talking with some other mums about how we were grateful that looser style jeans were taking over from skinnies as they were more comfortable on our postpartum bodies and that was in 2017!

I would find it hard to go back to skinny jeans to be honest, I tend to wear straight leg, bootcut or wide now and they are much more comfortable and flattering. I agree with a PP that very few people look good in skinny jeans unless they're tall and slim. I am neither and looking back at photos of me in skinny jeans and trainers I looked absolutely awful.

But then clearly some other posters on here will think I look terrible in my wide leg trousers so honestly I'd just wear what you like and find comfortable because you're never going to please everyone so you may as well just please yourself!

A very quick search found this: every style is in, is my takeaway message.
(Edited to add: skinny are called drainpipe here)

Edited

Drainpipe is not the same as skinnies. Drainpipe is straight leg - straight all the way down. The skinnies that are really out at the moment are the ones that are tight to the ankle. It is a very dated look in fashion terms, which doesn’t mean it isn’t practical or can’t be worn - it just won’t look current.

They look a lot better than those awful barrel leg jeans.

I've just bought barrel leg jeans and they are more flattering on my shape than any other style of trouser I've ever worn

I've since found some tweed and cord barrel legs from previous seasons at COS on vinted and my wardrobe is transformed!

I love a cropped tshirt with high waist loose barrel legs. They look fabulous on me!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 09/03/2026 09:56

Given the current IMO hideous fashions in jeans and trousers generally (huge wide leg, barrel leg, ‘Mom’ , etc.) surely the best strategy is to go for what you feel comfortable in, and what looks good on YOU.

Re such fashions generally, it’s as well to remember that designers/retailers will always want to come up with something ‘new’ so that people will feel the need to buy it, even though they’ve got 11 ‘not latest fashion’ pairs at home.

Attenboroughsmistress · 09/03/2026 10:01

I wouldn’t wear skinny as in “stretch denim” anymore as I would just feel extremely dated, but a slim straight leg is fine. Honestly I initially balked at the idea of a “low waist” wide leg jean at first but if you try on a few they can actually be lovely and flattering - just need to make sure they hug the bum and go wide at the right part of the leg. I love my loose low jeans now!

Who determines what is in and out of fashion? Manufacturing businesses who want to make money out of buyers who worry that they will be deemed as unfashionable!

Wear whatever you feel most comfortable in and ignore everyone else!

No drainpipe here is not skinny. the article also explains rhe difference between skinny and drainpipe. They are wider. It’s what others call cigarette.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 09/03/2026 10:26

There’s enough diversity in denim now, that anything goes. Skinnies do nothing for me, I’m loving barrel legs.

ImFineItsAllFine · 09/03/2026 10:28

IsItTooPink · 09/03/2026 08:10

You’ll have to pull my skinnies out of my cold dead hands before I give them up Grin

I also tend to wear them when I’m gardening, walking the dogs or sorting the horses and I can wear with boots. Wide leg, boot or any other leg just gets messy and wet at the bottom. So yes, it’s often a lifestyle thing.

Agree with this, I live in a very muddy village and skinnies are still very much the norm - there's no wide leg jeans going on round here!

cramptramp · 08/03/2026 21:04

They’ve been unfashionable for so long (years) they might be coming back in fashion.

that really is not what the fashion press is saying anymore. Celine had skinny jeans back on the runway recently, which is usually a pretty strong signal that a trend is circling back.

Vogue has also said they are returning, although the look is slightly updated - more high-waisted and slim rather than the old spray-on jegging style from the 2010s.

Wide and straight leg jeans are still everywhere, but skinny jeans are definitely creeping back into the mix again.

Off topic but I never see B&S fans in the wild (except at their gigs, obvs).

We need a secret code! Looking forward to seeing them in the summer :-)

Magicpaintbrush · 09/03/2026 10:39

Well the memo about skinny jeans hasn't reached Sittingbourne, I see people wearing them all the time here - although I wouldn't call it the fashion capital of the universe, I'd say your regular person on the street is still wearing them. And I think certain jean shapes suit certain tops - with skinny jeans you'd maybe wear something looser that hangs down, whereas I think with wide leg/bootcut type jeans or trousers you look more balanced wearing a top that nips in at the waist. Sadly I am a stone overweight and neither option looks nice on me, nothing does in fact.

Petrolitis · 09/03/2026 10:40

Nowimreallyworried · 08/03/2026 21:05

Really?? Oh Lord. I honestly don't think I look bad in them? They're just jeans?

Well. Time to go shopping I guess. Why are we supposed to wear instead?

Do you really want to consume more than you need because some daft influencer or pretentious fashion writer tells you that you should?

Personally I would like to rename this section of Mumsnet something along the lines of Style Beauty and Snobbery, as it's really judgmental a lot of the time.

PS5Gamer · 09/03/2026 10:42

I tend to stick with straight or wide leg jeans, regardless of what’s in fashions.

My legs look awful in skinnies and when I tried on Carrot/barrel leg jeans I looked like CoCo the Clown.

I’m not sure ifs about giving a toss about what others think and very few people really don’t give a toss. Otherwise we would all be fronting up and work and weddings in leggings and joggers, no bra and sloppy t shirts. We all give a toss to some extent, and clearly so do you or you’d not be on this thread.

very few want to look dated, and im in rhe same age group and I do think a nod to current gives a fresher look,

but it doesn’t get away from the fact if you’re heavier and want to wear long tops to hide your tummy, wide leg can be difficult, as closer fitting tops work better, but that’s where a straight leg comes in, or a relaxed straight leg. A much more flattering current look where longer tops can work. And nothing clings to the tummy.

the difference with the jeans of today v the fashionable skinnies a few years ago, is skinnies it was , if they fit they are good, it was easy, where as with today’s styles it takes more effort to find the right shape and fit for you.

id also say a lot of people wore skinnies where it was really really unflattering, so tight they wrinkled round the calf and looked like compression tights, Or a turnip leg look, or ankles looking squeezed, or material stretched out to the max.often a bit of camel toe visible when a top rolled up or seated, and although everyone wore them, few looked good, and few realised it. The jeans of today are much more forgiving.

we can say straight or wide is unflattering bur often it’s just getting used to it, as the skinny was never flattering either for many. And when they first came out, the reaction was similar to now.

You can't control what other people think about your clothes.

You can wear what you like, what you think suits you, what you have in your wardrobe, and if you like skinnies, then wear skinnies.

If you are asking what is in fashion right now, and for the past few seasons, it is absolutely not skinny jeans. The world and his wife are wearing baggier or at least straight legged bigger jeans, often with a tight top for the younger generation or baggy/nice cashmere jumper.

If you don't mind rocking a different look, or you want to update your skinnies with boots on the top or wearing black ones, or some such modification, then knock yourself out.

Reading how indignant people are about skinnies is weird though, they were in fashion for sooo long, you must have got good wear out of them. I prefer to look slightly more current, with a nod to fashion, although not a whole bow to it, and so I've moved to wider legged jeans and lovely dark denim culotte types, as well as bootcut/flares which have a skinny top and then a flared bottom so still show off your bottom/upper legs if that's why you like skinnies.

Don't be upset about it though, if you know your 'look' and like it, stick with it, but it is changeable for less than a tenner on Vinted! And, no, people don't look 'better' in skinnies, they look different and sometimes they are not that flattering, like everything jean it depends on the cut, colour and your shape.

What a strange way to describe getting a second-hand pair of straight legged jeans off Vinted! Fashions have always changed, clothes are communication.

Namechangerage · 09/03/2026 10:50

If you have not noticed that skinny jeans were out of fashion until now…. Then just keep wearing them as you’re clearly not “in the loop” with trends. It is fine not to be in the loop btw, I just don’t understand why you’re suddenly panicking about it 🤣

If you really want to change your jeans, look up: Straight leg, Wide legs, carrot legs, barrel legs. Better still, go to M and S and try some on (I choose Marks or Sainsburys for the short length)

I wouldn’t call them ‘pretentious’ - ‘vacuous’ would IMO be more like it.

DrMickhead · 09/03/2026 10:53

You can drag my skinny jeans off my chubby millennial dead arse before I let them go.

Im an odd shape, quite a hefty woman, but skinnies suit me. I have thicc legs but a nice shape and they don’t make my arse look massive but more shapely than it is.

In modern shaped jeans I look like a fat teenage goth. Which was mostly how I looked as a teenager. So I’ll avoid the baggy jeans look.
