What's wrong with skinny jeans?

Just saw another thread about jeans and boots - and it occured to me that I've seen a fair few references both here and elsewhere that seemed to be saying that skinny jeans are now no longer fashionable. As in, quite outdated. Is that right?

I'm really not in to fashion per se but I do want to look at least presentable and nice. They're pretty much staple what I wear - with a t-shirt or jumper (not scruffy ones) and boots. Am I unwittingly making a faux pas??! Yikes!

I honestly can’t think of a single person I know who actually knows what’s 'fashionable' these days. Unless you’re a fifteen-year-old, you shouldn’t give a damn anyway. Looking back, there have been so many utterly ridiculous trends that I wouldn't have been caught dead in, regardless of how 'in' they were at the time.

Who decides what is in and out of fashion?
I just wear clothes I like- does it really matter if others don’t like them? Not to me.

We saw a man in skinny jeans in a pub today. They were so tight, they looked sprayed on. His kegs looked like massive parsnips. They finished at his ankles and he had trainers with no socks.

It was such a throwback, we all gawped. Why did anyone ever think they were a good look (myself included)?

Life,s too mental for fashion.. just be neat in whatever looks half good on you 😍😍😍♥️

These!

I have them in three washes and they all fit quite differently despite all being a UK 12. The light wash is longer and just overall bigger, but the fabric is more “drapey”, and the cream seem wider but are the same length as the navy. I really like all three pairs though and am looking forward to wearing the cream pair in spring with Birkenstock clogs.

Thank you so much!

I may go in and try them on if they’ve got them in store. I often find Cos quite unpredictable in sizing or slightly over sized.

I saw some cropped rib cage jeans in a magazine yesterday. They were truly awful. It was a seriously Monty Python Gumbie vibe.

I was late to the flare party, mainly because I was wearing mine from 95 until around 2004. Then skinnies around 2007.Bought one pair of flares again around 2009.

I have a couple of pairs, but as pp have said, they don't have that tight to the knee thing going on anymore. I like to go full 70s, with a 70s shirt when I wear them.

I still wear skinnies, but I prefer to roll to ankles up. Sometimes it's dms, tight, rolled up skinnies and band t shirt. Sometimes it's rolled up skinnies and tight, tie front shirt, like Marilyn Monroe in the misfits. I only nod to fashion; I like a look.

Thanks to everyone for all their replies - it's been really interesting! I do think I am still wearing them because they seem to fit and suit me whereas I'm not sure others will - and I certainly don't have the fashion 'sense' to know how to wear them well if they're not immediately a good fit.

After all this chat I think I am happy in keeping with them. It was really a surprise to me to hear they are considered 'unfashionable', but as I'm not trying to win any awards I think I'll be able to sleep at night.

My current skinny pair are starting to wear a hole so when they go I will definitely be trying on a few different styles just to see! Not convinced I won't just end up with the same as before but you never know.

I agree if you’re not bothered about looking current or dated then wear what you please, but when it gets to time to buy new ones, then do try many pairs, but again, wear what you like.

you see all types when you’re out and about, the one rule I have is you should never follow fashion blindly it if looks bad on you, don’t wear it.

But I do differentiate between current and fashion, current is more a nod to styles and cuts, and for me is more sweeping, young people, 20s and below, are more into fashion, it’s often fast and changing, where as as you get older it’s more about current shapes, cuts, quality and styles to make you look less dated, and give a more fresher look, it’s very ageing to be dressed in dated clothes, not something someone needs to worry about though, if they don’t care about that.

I think wear what you feel good in OP. It's great to see in the comments everyone has their own preferences, but I have to laugh at those saying no one suits skinny jeans/ only tall people suit them. Have you never met anyone petite? I'm an 8-10 and 5ft3 and skinny/slim/ straight (at an absolute push) are the only styles that don't swamp me and make me look dumpy. If I had really high heels on under a pair of neat wide-legs I could maybe get away with it, but apparently heels are even more dated than skinnies! Tall women can get away with more fabric flapping about the place.

SlippySausage · 15/03/2026 18:56

I love my barrel jeans but skinny jeans (and stiletto heels) are about to make a massive return. Don't think anything is really 'out of fashion' any more - it's like music these days - everything is pick and mix.

I said only slim people suit them, they don’t have to be tall. There are many other types of jean more generally flattering.

Im 5’4 myself size 6-8 and it’s not true at all that only skinny jeans don’t swamp.

I wear skinny bell bottoms - ie skinny to the knee - very flattering if you’re short as the flares hide heels and give you height; boyfriend; and slight flares. Levi’s 501s are back so I wear them too.

I don’t really see people wearing skinnies in this bit of London or maybe I don’t notice.

I’ve tried to move away from skinnies but have tried on about 50 pairs of wide legs and they’re mostly awful. Often too long. Then I look around and don’t see anyone else looking particularly good in wide leg or barrel 🤷‍♀️. So I’ll carry on wearing my skinnies.

Same here. I bloody love my skinnies and I will carry on wearing them, I loathe the bootcut with a passion and as for barrel leg....
