What's wrong with skinny jeans?

Just saw another thread about jeans and boots - and it occured to me that I've seen a fair few references both here and elsewhere that seemed to be saying that skinny jeans are now no longer fashionable. As in, quite outdated. Is that right?

I'm really not in to fashion per se but I do want to look at least presentable and nice. They're pretty much staple what I wear - with a t-shirt or jumper (not scruffy ones) and boots. Am I unwittingly making a faux pas??! Yikes!

A year and a bit? Good Lord. I need to walk round more, clearly.

I have a fear that wide legged trousers, jeans in particular, will make me look like a rectangle. I have a straight up and down waist so I can't see wide or barrels doing me any favours.

But, as mentioned, I already probably look a bit odd so I'm not ill be in any worse spot!

Nothing is wrong with them per se and if like most of the posters on this thread you couldn’t care less about opinions/fashion then of course it doesn’t matter, but if you’re looking for a more modern and up to date look they’re not it.

wide, barrel or carrot leg are much more of the moment and tend to be considerably more flattering. If you’re really committed to skinnies and want to make a small step change then straight leg mum/boyfriend jeans are a good option. They give the same sort of look without the cling that is dated.

my young adult DD has never worn skinnies which tells me that they’ve been out of fashion with the youth for at least 8-10 years, which means as others have pointed out they’re probably due a resurgence.

Ill probably get my arse handed to me but the only people who look good in skinny jeans are tall people with long slim legs.
Even they are not infallible. Kate Moss at 5 foot 7 is too short and looks bandy legged in them.
Everyone else looks like sausage stuffing.
I cant wear them either. Im not overweight but my thighs are curvy and Im too short.
A boot cut improves them no end. The tight fit all the way down makes anyone who has muscular calves look chunky and it isnt flattering.

I bought both carrot and boyfriend jeans (which were fast replacing skinnies) from M&S in the height of Covid (2021) and I am definitely not fashion forward 😊

They've been completely out of fashion for a fair bit longer than that

If I’ve worked out they are unfashionable then they’ve been unfashionable for at least 5 years.

wider legs are now fashionable. The yoof are wearing 90s style baggy jeans. I can’t wear that but I am wearing wider legs than I was.

uniqlo have some good cuts.

I just tell anyone who is stupid enough to comment that elegant people don’t need to concern themselves with ‘fashionable’.

Still wearing skinny jeans because I don't want to contribute to fast fashion. If I bought a new pair of jeans I'd probably go straight leg but I'll do that when I need a new pair and by then skinny jeans will probably be back 'in' anyway

I haven’t seen anyone wearing skinny jeans and trainers for ages (boots definitely).
Jeans are now straight leg or wide leg. Some bootcut and kick flares.

My son’s slim girlfriend wears wide leg jeans and looks cool and pretty. If friends my age wear wide leg they generally look frumpy I fear. I have some barrel leg cords myself, but I must admit while comfortable they are not very flattering. My wide leg jeans are better but I have to be very careful what I put them with. I’m aware skinnies in boots are “out” but generally I think they are a better shape on me as long as they’re with boots.

I will never take off my skinny jeans. I think the whole mum, baggy, wide leg, barrel thing is a big mistake that humans will eventually regret!

Things are only ‘on trend’ if you follow it and I’d rather have an eye out than wear something that looks gash just because a ‘trend’ tells me to.

The Princess of Wales still wears skinny jeans and she always looks lovely (to me)

I am wearing skinny jeans and trainers right now.

I love leggings and a oversize jumpper or shirt, ive been the same since 9 years old im almost 40 now, i dont care whats in or out, i dont need to follow a crowd to fit in.

Oh no skinnies have been out since pre pandemic so honestly just go for it as they’re coming back.

I’ve always looked hideous in skinnies so was thankful when wide legs finally came in. And I know I look way better in them so will never wear skinnies again as long as I can buy wide legs !

I bloody hate skinny jeans so gleefully switched as soon as they weren’t ‘fashionable’ and to be honest I can’t see myself ever wearing them again - they make my legs look like parsnips and I now have the added joy of a menopausal tummy. But if they suit you and you like them who gives an actual fuck if they’re in fashion or not?

Ha ha! Yes me too with the parsnip legs! I had only just got round to wearing them really and then only with boots before they started to go out of fashion.

I haven't stopped wearing skinny jeans. I love em and not once have I given a toss about what's fashionable - other than the sometimes awful trends that leave me with little to treat myself. Right now that's short tops and woolies and wide-legged or barrel jeans, flipping awful!

I can't for the life of me get proper bootcut jeans/kick flares, I've given up looking. They're all baggy from the thigh onwards, look stupid. In the old days they'd be slim fit past the knee then softly flare out - looked great with sandals in the summer.

Whats in or out of fashion is a way of selling more stuff we don't need. If you've got skinny jeans in your wardrobe - wear them, don't waste money on ugly barrel jeans which are 'in' , as they will soon be 'out'. It's ridiculous the amount of lightly worn clothes that are sent to landfill. It's all a marketing ploy, don't waste your money.

I’ve not worn skinny jeans since around 2016. They’d had a strangle hold over the high street for what must have been 15 years and I couldn’t wait to switch. I think the last 10 years have been great with no single style taking sole control and something for everyone.

I’d say the balance has tipped towards wide legs now but, much as I like them, I still hope they don’t go on to dominate in the way askinnies did.

I’ve tried to move away from skinnies but have tried on about 50 pairs of wide legs and they’re mostly awful. Often too long. Then I look around and don’t see anyone else looking particularly good in wide leg or barrel 🤷‍♀️. So I’ll carry on wearing my skinnies.

My 19-year-old despises skinny jeans so much, that I have now embraced the wider leg jeans and I love them more!
