What's wrong with skinny jeans?

Nowimreallyworried · 08/03/2026 21:02

Just saw another thread about jeans and boots - and it occured to me that I've seen a fair few references both here and elsewhere that seemed to be saying that skinny jeans are now no longer fashionable. As in, quite outdated. Is that right?

I'm really not in to fashion per se but I do want to look at least presentable and nice. They're pretty much staple what I wear - with a t-shirt or jumper (not scruffy ones) and boots. Am I unwittingly making a faux pas??! Yikes!

I think a lot of people look like Mr Peanut in skinny jeans or slim fit straight cut trousers. I have muscly legs and a slimmer body but the 2010s long top and skinny jeans/jeggings thing wasn't great as it covered my waist and made me look short legged. Felt like something from the Tudor era. Plus trousers tended to all be low rise, for ages, and with a normal length top you'd risk a builder's bum effect.

I normally like Oliver Bonas clothes and have had a few pairs of their wide legged trousers in different colours. But this season all their trousers in the shops are massive wide legged jeans and cropped. These clown trousers can fuck off too.

Bootcut and flares are different things aren't they? Bootcut remind me of what 30 something women wore in the 90s and would get from Next or M&S but flares are more retro in a good way, like the ME+EM ones above.

Edited

Yes they are different, bootcut isn’t back in yet. Usually when a style is so ubiquitous, it takes a long time for it to come back, skinny is in the same boat. Although of course some people still wear bootcut, and some always have,

the flares now are a different cut totally to boot cut, they are like a fresher take on the 60s,

Yes! I’ve bought/returned two different pairs from there recently. I also found the 12s (my usual size) huge but okay length-wise because they sat low on the waist, and the ten better at the waist but properly half-mast. I’m 5ft 6 so not especially tall, and can usually eyeball stuff rather than need to try on in store, but these caught me out!

Gettingbysomehow · 10/03/2026 08:24

I remember in the 70s as a 13 year old cutting up the sides of my jeans and sewing in triangles to make massive bell bottoms. The trousers from the knees up were so tight they would mutilate your genitals.
That's one fashion we dont need back 😂

I'm 56 & 5ft 9" size 12, 34" leg & i last wore skinny jeans in 2020 & even then i knew they were over

Since then i've worn straight leg, barrel & slim fit jeans & trousers.

I think skinny jeans look awful on everyone & even worse tucked into long boots

Why are you on Style and Beauty if you care so little 🙅‍♀️

Because what do you know people can enjoy clothing THEY like not some crazy person that can't get dressed unless a magazine tells them they should like it 🙁 it's called personal taste

Skinnies can look great on very slim women.

But by and large more forgiving jeans are more flattering.

I'm over 6ft, over 50, a size 12, 37" inside leg and skinny jeans in long boots look great on me 🥰

It’s annoying as I have a few long line blazers and loafers that I loved wearing with my skinnies but these don’t look right with wide leg/baggier styles. I have pointed boots with a low heel that I’m wearing with my wide legs but these are not comfortable for walking about in that much. And then you need longer ones for wearing with heels and regular length ones for wearing with trainers or flats

You need a short cut jacket for wide legs. It's a minefield 😂

Yes I think everyone lost sight of that to be honest.

when they first came into fashion they took a long time to become ubiquitous. People were havering about how boot cut was so much more flattering and blamed the legs. How they looked awful in them. Then slowly everyone started to wear them and as everyone looked universally shit together it became the norm ans acceptable Most people look like they’ve turnips for legs in them, or they are barrel shaped and hiding their bellies.

as boot cut isn’t even back yet, I reckon it will be another decade before skinnies come back likely longer,

so I’d say current styles, wide leg, barrel, carrot, flare, etc are here to stay for the foreseeable. However the good news I feel is there is many variances in shape in these styles, that you can find ones to fit your body type. And age really, as many mature women don’t want exaggerated width, but teens may,

even on this thread alone we have seen two sets of barrel jeans, one they were c shaped at the outer leg, the other more straight,

buf for me, as long as i get them fitted through the hips and upper thighs, they work, give me shape, and if leg isn’t too wide. It’s hugely flattering. But if you are a different shape, and want to hide your tummy, then a slim leg flare is likely better, as you still see thigh shape, can wear a longer top, but the bottom balances out the top,

like these from markies, they are much more current and flattering for most women than skinnies,

@Brightlittlecanary those are nice jeans!

Yes they sort of bridge the gap between wide and skinny, a shape a lot of people can get on board with, and way more flattering, they are also current,

I have these ones, and they are sold out l although I’m sure they will come back in, M&S have a lot in this style though. And if someone is worried to give up skinnies this is a good step in the right direction.

henlake7 · 11/03/2026 15:03

I think skinnies can look dated for sure. Feels like younger generations are just all about comfort as most of the clothes are quite baggy and loose (which I love!).
I rarely wear them but when I do I treat them like leggings so only really wear with giant chunky boots and an oversized tee or jumper.

hobbledyhoy · 11/03/2026 22:53

@Judystilldreamsofhorseslove those jeans. Had a look on the cos website and can’t see them - if you’re able to tell me which they are I’d be very grateful!

These!

I have them in three washes and they all fit quite differently despite all being a UK 12. The light wash is longer and just overall bigger, but the fabric is more “drapey”, and the cream seem wider but are the same length as the navy. I really like all three pairs though and am looking forward to wearing the cream pair in spring with Birkenstock clogs.

ChocolateHobbit · 11/03/2026 23:37

I wear skinny jeans because they suit my proportions and I feel good in them. In fact thankfully I can get away with skinny, wide leg or flared.

What I can't get on board with is straight leg, boyfriend type jeans or barrel leg. They just don't look good on me.

I care more about style than fashion though. Fashion simply influences my style from time to time.
I'd say 75% of what's currently fashionable I wouldn't wear because it doesn't suit me.

IDontHateRainbows · 11/03/2026 23:55

Overtheatlantic · 08/03/2026 21:10

I don’t know. I work in a university and all the students wear wide leg jeans but I’m in my mid 50s and I don’t want to wear what they wear. So if you like your skinny jeans then wear them. One day soon the fashion will change again.

I'm so behind the curve, I'm always just ahead of the next curve!

Clarabell77 · 12/03/2026 09:16

Nowimreallyworried · 08/03/2026 21:05

Really?? Oh Lord. I honestly don't think I look bad in them? They're just jeans?

Well. Time to go shopping I guess. Why are we supposed to wear instead?

Just because they’re not in fashion doesn’t mean you look bad in them. If you like them and suit them, wear them.

corblimeyguvnr · 12/03/2026 09:32

If I had the body of the Princess of Wales I would wear them but as I don't I have now ditched them.

Nowimreallyworried · 12/03/2026 10:18

Thanks to everyone for all their replies - it's been really interesting! I do think I am still wearing them because they seem to fit and suit me whereas I'm not sure others will - and I certainly don't have the fashion 'sense' to know how to wear them well if they're not immediately a good fit.

After all this chat I think I am happy in keeping with them. It was really a surprise to me to hear they are considered 'unfashionable', but as I'm not trying to win any awards I think I'll be able to sleep at night.

My current skinny pair are starting to wear a hole so when they go I will definitely be trying on a few different styles just to see! Not convinced I won't just end up with the same as before but you never know.
