I think I'm done with glittery nails at Christmas

I just looked at mine which I only have during December and realised I can't wait to get them off and changed to a plain colour. And it got me thinking, are glittery nails a bit "im a crazy middle-aged mum #LiveLaughlove "?

I can’t do glitter either. Although I’m pretty ancient these days. Same with the ‘accent nail.’ I knocked that on the head a few years ago.

I now just go for a chocolate brown in November, a festive red in December, inky blue in January and ‘bubble bath’ the rest of the year

I was a horrendous nail biter up until about a year ago when a nail salon managed to get acrylic extensions on the stumps I had, which surprisingly stayed on with infills for nearly a year - so I now have nails!

Generally mine are a variety of red, with or without glitter depending on my mood on the day, and last year I went very red and glittery - this year I've got glitter orange on (kind of a gingerbread colour) just for the hell of it. I don't tend to do nail art (I'm cheap and go for the basic maintenance routine cos it's a pain going to get them done every few weeks to be honest but my natural nails are so weak I need to have them kept on top of or they'd snap and I'd relapse into biting straight away).

But I think you're all missing the point, it's not about whether other people like them or don't like them I just realised I didn't like my own and was I growing out of them.
RIP glitter nails

which is fair enough, it just had me musing on how often I myself do glitter nails is all 😂

it’s funny how tastes change over time, treat yourself to a nice nude 🥰

These are lovely.

What colour is 'bubble bath'?

DollopOfFun · 22/12/2025 13:18

I can't get my fingernails done until I've finished work for Xmas, so I don't do glitter as it feels too late.

I'm calling this Santa Suit red, but actually I always go for a tomatoey red rather than a darker/ blue toned as I think it suits me a bit better

Those of you who get gel toe nails, can I ask why? Genuine, non-judgemental question. I just wonder because it's not like toe nails chip and arent they are a pain to remove? Is it to match your finger nails?

I do wonder why gel polush companies dont do a matching non-gel colour. Then people can do quick touch ups at home between appointments or do their toes.

I have them done twice a year, because they grow slower than my fingers so last a lot longer. I had them done in September and they are grown out a bit but still immaculate. That doesn’t happen with regular polish.

also they don’t die my nails yellow. When i leave regular polish on for ages they get stained

FourBlackCats · 22/12/2025 13:33

SocksAndTheCity · 22/12/2025 11:56

These are my glittery nails but I just shovel a load on the tips with Barry M's finest 😀

I like it because it's so tough that they actually get the chance to grow a bit without getting broken. It's a bitch to get off though.

I use the soak off clips designed for gel and pure acetone to get glitter polish off - no scrubbing required.

DecemberGoneWild · 22/12/2025 14:38

I only really see thickness with enhancements. Now I'm concerned mine are like clubs or something and I'm nail polish blind or something. 🤣

I hadn’t realised that looking at lots of pics would give me the heebee geebees, like a kind of morbid fascination to keep looking. I admire the fact that people have the time / money / energy to get them done and from a distance they look tidy and give a ‘well groomed’, I am disappointingly scruffy. but close up they all look so plasticky and fake, especially when there is a bit of nail showing at the base it sets my teeth on edge. I think it is something about the thickness of the gel stuff. Normal home painted nails don’t make me feel this. It’s not in a snobby way or judgemental way - I’d like to like them but they are just weird, it’s more of a physical reaction! And I can’t stop looking at them on people, luckily I don’t know many people who get the done! Especially freaky are the coloured tips which, to me, look like the person has been scratching/ gouging something and not cleaned their nails. Really long ones just look completely stupid and impractical.

Gee what are you like when you’re being judgemental?

patooties · 22/12/2025 14:59

Love mine too.

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie I’ve attached a stock pic for you. It’s very plain but just adds a ‘polished ‘ look and crucially, you don’t do that thing where you can’t bear the sight of them after a week 🤣

I had minimal glitter... love a black tip!

I always think that looks like dirt under your nails (sorry)

I took it to mean painted rather than manicured.

Manicured nails always look chic. Painted nails and length of nails etc are a matter of personal opinion. But manicured, tidy, well looked after and neat nails will never look naff.

Was thinking the same thing: surely manicured nails are just natural nails at their best - shaped and polished with a buffer, tidied up around the cuticles, hands smoothed with moisturiser? Not sure how that can be naff.

Also, if you can’t have glitter at Christmas, when can you?!

outofofficeagain · 21/12/2025 16:44

I decided against red glitter this year and went for blue. You can hardly see the glitter but I feel like I’ve made the effort.

I don’t like nail art. I’m 50 and it feels a bit silly on my hands.

50? You have lovely hands (or fingers at least). They look also look much younger than 50 imo.

Booksandwine80 · 22/12/2025 16:20

I do know what you mean, I do my own and did this set a week ago. Already looking forward to a nice nude for NYE!

Some gorgeous nails on this thread. Love to see it. I went to the salon today - a girl in there asked for something Christmassy, inside I was thinking she’s a bit late.

so because I’m such a bonkers and quirky try-hard, I kept the accent nail for all the haters. Not sure whether to use it for all my lines of coke or the nose picking. Might do both.

#LiveLaughLove

its a dark metallic blue and gold glitter.

I don't do my nails at all, but I've enjoyed this thread. One of my friends goes all out with glitter, art and attached gems, and while I appreciate the artwork, I'm a rather plain gal.

I will always compliment interesting nails when I see them out in the wild.

Jenasaurus · 22/12/2025 23:48

I’ve just had mine done. Silver as it felt like half Christmas and half new year. It gives me pleasure to do get my nails done even at 60 I love a bit of glitter
