I think I'm done with glittery nails at Christmas

I just looked at mine which I only have during December and realised I can't wait to get them off and changed to a plain colour. And it got me thinking, are glittery nails a bit "im a crazy middle-aged mum #LiveLaughlove "?

"Middle aged live laugh love" or...

Grown up woman finally thinking "screw it, if I want glitter, I'm getting glitter and be damned whether other people approve"?

Exactly this.

I am very unkempt as a rule but, when my life was falling apart I started having a regular nail appointment so that I could have one aspect of my life that was good. I look at my nails and it reminds me that I’m still holding on.

So if I can have a joyful colour or a bit of glitter, absolutely I’m doing that.

Nightlight8 · 21/12/2025 20:56

These are my natural nails. I never usually have red on my hands.

Good God. I'll do what I want with my nails, whatever the time of year. I had light pink over the summer, and nothing so far this year as I've been away. Couldn't give a fat one what anyone "thinks" I "should" be wearing on my nails. This is exactly why I cut most of my extended family off. Always staring and judging.

bonesandbooth2025 · 21/12/2025 21:07

Just done mine
it’s more subtle in RL, pinky peach colour

I couldn't be happier with my brown glittery nails this year. I spend most of the year with subtle neutral shades and really like looking at the sparkle for a few weeks.

These are mine. They are stick on nails. Very easy to apply.

I don’t care! Second Xmas set, love the glitter and am at an age where Im not really bothered what others think. Tacky, middle aged, all of it 😊 I love it

If you want brutal honesty, manicured nails are nearly always naff. I think some very cool looking people can get away with ironic nail art, but that’s a rarity.

Manicured nails are always naff? To me manicured nails are clean and shaped. Presumably you mean done in a nail bar?

LivingDeadGirlUK · 21/12/2025 21:29

I've got a magnetic silver polish, its so shiny and I absolutely love it. Was strange having a magnet waved over my fingers when she did it though :P

magpie234 · 21/12/2025 21:39

IMO you cannot beat a chic oxblood nail at this time of year.

That said like everything in life everyone should absolutely do whatever makes them happy rather than worry about something being naff.

zebrapig · 21/12/2025 21:40

Lots of you will hate mine but I love them. I get them done for me and no-one else. They will be changed between Christmas and New Year for something more subtle and wintery though.

I got glitter nails and I regret them 😄😄

Agree with your op

StupidHappyClocks · 21/12/2025 21:42

I wear various shades of red about 80% of the year, so got a glittery gold/bronze as a change today. Really chuffed with it! I’ll go back to red in January.

I am a middle aged Mum, yes 😆

Turtlebed · 21/12/2025 21:46

I think you can have whatever nails you feel like. I personally didn't realise that you were supposed to have glittery nails at Christmas, but then I hate the feel of nail varnish, so it's not part of my life. However if I did get my nails painted, I would have them bright and glittery, and probably quite garish, but i am not known for my good taste 😆😆

ExamHellDoubled · 21/12/2025 21:48

I only ever have glitter at Christmas but this year I’ve gone for plain red instead of my usual nude / grey so I think I feel the same as you, op!

AutumnClouds · 21/12/2025 21:51

The pictures of pale or gold glittery nails on this thread look far more ‘classy’ to me than the talony plain colour ones, and the snowflakes and snowmen made me smile. Fake nails turn my stomach a bit when they’re too long or pointy, but love to see nice shorter ones that have been chosen to make the wearer happy.

Aworldofmyown · 21/12/2025 21:53

Jesus, there are some miserable fuckers on here.

Blondiney · 21/12/2025 21:55

I don't understand the whole painted nail thing but some of them do look really lovely, glittery or otherwise.

MatchaTea1 · 21/12/2025 22:02

i always used to go for dark glittery nails at this time of year, but they are less forgiving if the chip and I can’t afford to get my nails done as regularly as I used to, so I’ve gone for a shimmery pearl this year and I love the more subtle look which has surprised me!

I took it to mean painted rather than manicured.

Manicured nails always look chic. Painted nails and length of nails etc are a matter of personal opinion. But manicured, tidy, well looked after and neat nails will never look naff.

danglethedingle · 21/12/2025 22:27

I do love a nail thread, I love seeing all the beautiful nails. I am very envious. Mine are horrible flaky, ridged, lumpy things, and they have to be kept short. Painting them only draws attention to the state of them.

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 21/12/2025 22:28

It’s so hard to take a decent picture of my nails! What’s the secret!

mine are being redone soon so a bit grown out but I’m really pleased with them and getting the same. Tortoiseshell with a gold fleck.

Any visible polish or colour at all, or obvious white tips, I think of as being ‘manicured’. Just cleaning and filing your own nails I wouldn’t think of as manicured.

I can shape mine, do cuticle care etc and although they look cared for, they dont look neat if that makes sense. I have really deep ridges and dark lines and uneven white bits.

If I have a neutral on like a pale pink, it makes them look 100% better. It needs to be a solid colour though. Anything sheer emphasises the lines.

With green glitter, mine are not chic right now but I dont care! 🤣

Sugar plum fairy sort of Christmassy colour, gorgeous!
