I think I'm done with glittery nails at Christmas

I just looked at mine which I only have during December and realised I can't wait to get them off and changed to a plain colour. And it got me thinking, are glittery nails a bit "im a crazy middle-aged mum #LiveLaughlove "?

I hope you have some things in real life to help distract from this “morbid fascination” you have with other people’s finger nails!

It was only reading this thread and seeing so many thick nails in one place that made me conscious of how I instinctively feel about them! It’s not something I think about at other times - if I see (which is rare) a set up close I just find them quite distracting. As I said I think they can look nice and tidy - but also weird. It’s the thickness and gap of exposed nail at the base that looks freaky to me.

This looks brilliant! How did you do it?
I don't do my nails usually-gel wrecks them - but I'd love something like this!

Google stamping plates. They are metal plates with designs engraved in them. You use stamping polish which is higher pigmented.

Look up stamping videos. So much fun. I've posted others on the "I want to see your nails" thread. You're really only limited by your imagination.

Then you can get stickers (I prefer the water ones as they're much thinner), foils - they're like a transfer image that you use glue and then stick on, chrome powders, dotting tools etc

You can have so much fun without using gels and acrylics. I love normal polish as I can do it weekly so if I'm not super fussed one week, then I get new ones the next week. When I'm having a bad moment at work, looking at my pretty nails makes me happy.

Glittery is better than the ones with snowmen and candy canes painted on at least 😬

Nonsense. Painted ones are super fun. 🤪🤪

I’m 53 ;-)

I stick to the same two colours all year round 😂 A red with orange tones in Spring/Summer, and a classic red in Autumn/Winter. I never get glitter or art (because on the odd occasion I have, I instantly regretted it). It's all just personal choice, fair play to those who go glittery or arty if it makes you happy 😊
These are my short, neat, single shade efforts 😂

Nicest ones on here I reckon. Some of the ones posted look really thick

Thank you 😊 I don't have builder gel, I just get the standard gel.

EmmaStone · 22/12/2025 10:48

Most of December had a deep burgundy but have succumbed to some glitter. Because it’s quite unobtrusive I don’t mind it too much.

Am planning a deep navy possibly with 1 small gold dot at the base in January.

These are mine. Excuse slightly grubby hands, it's food colouring and will need acetone or something to shift the last of it. This is just gel polish, no biab/acrylic.

Life is short. Decorate your nails however makes you happy. I think it's really sad when women stop doing things that make them happy because they're worried other people might have judgemental thoughts about their age.

Came here to say this! Holy moly, another thing to be judged on as a woman! Sat here with full on was nail art at 56years old and I have glitter all year round! Glad I’m aware of just how trashy I am now! Loving the photos!

Tiddlywinkly · 22/12/2025 11:14

I've gone for bright red nails this year. I would have gone for glittery red, but after Boxing Day, it feels a bit off and I wasn't feeling it either.

NailsForChristmas · 22/12/2025 11:23

I love bright and colourful nails. I'm a little quirky, but not excessively.I don't do makeup or follow fashion. But love having fun nails. These are my Christmas set.
I think everyone should just wear what makes them happy and not worry about what other people do or like. If you like plain, go plain. If you want glitter go glitter. Make yourself smile when you see them.

@NailsForChristmas love love LOVE those!

ThisSassyHam · 22/12/2025 11:36

I love a glitter polish, but the only time I usually do glitter is at Christmas. Most of the time I have a nude set as I think it looks fresh.

@DecemberGoneWild Yes I’m boring - I just want to got to work, get through a meeting as quickly as possible without having to fake interest at other people’s nails. I’m not interested in them, but pretend I very much am, to be polite. I see where I’m going wrong now.

iCod · 22/12/2025 11:55

But I think you're all missing the point, it's not about whether other people like them or don't like them I just realised I didn't like my own and was I growing out of them.
RIP glitter nails

These are my glittery nails but I just shovel a load on the tips with Barry M's finest 😀

I like it because it's so tough that they actually get the chance to grow a bit without getting broken. It's a bitch to get off though.

Completely agree. I (middle aged and don’t care) use nail wraps because my nails are in terrible condition due to long term illness, and I wear glitter wraps all year round because they hide the dents and ridges. But also because I love them and they make me happy! A client saw I had pink glitter in September and chided me for wearing glitter when it wasn’t Christmas.
I wear what I like and anyone else’s opinion is irrelevant!
I’m really not sure why some people care what other women’s nails look like.

That's how I took your post. There are a few joyless miseries on the thread but you're not one of them.
