I think I'm done with glittery nails at Christmas

I just looked at mine which I only have during December and realised I can't wait to get them off and changed to a plain colour. And it got me thinking, are glittery nails a bit "im a crazy middle-aged mum #LiveLaughlove "?

Ive got dark red glitter this year but am now thinking they are a bit old fashioned. We had a family do yesterday and the trend amongst the youngsters (18- 28) was nude with a red tip. Three of them had exactly the same done completely independently x

piscofrisco · 22/12/2025 07:34

I had mine done yesterday and went for a very non festive almost black dark red. I think glitter is a bit granny ish tbh but plenty of other people clearly don’t as everyone in the nail bar was getting either glitter or Christmas bright red.

They’re not “fun mum”‘they’re just a bit dated.

But Christmas nail art is a whole different thing. Please don’t show your nail art to your colleagues in the style of a five year old who just got a new Labubu.

Why cant someone show off their nails to people who are interested?

Or is enthusiasm and happiness also banned because it's "naff"?

I dont show mine off because no one cares and I'm not going to make them pretend to but by god are you boring to not want people to share things that make them happy.

Is that not a bit like wearing the same dress? I'd be a bit sad if I'd chosen something and everyone else turned up with the same.

Hmmmmwineandchocs · 22/12/2025 07:28

Hi, which ones do you use and how do you remove them?

These are from Fette, you remove them by soaking them in warm soapy water to loosen them, and then you use a cuticle stick to gently prise them off. Then you store them for the next time you want to wear them.
I liked the look of BIAB and longish nails but the problem is i have a lot of manual hobbies and it annoyed me that I couldn't cut my own nails, also I hated having to go and sit for an hour while getting my nails done

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 22/12/2025 07:41

I think the problem with red sparkles is that every man and his dog has it at this time of year. I opted for black sparkles, which feels relatively festive but maybe not quite so common. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t dislike red sparkles, but my nail lady said she gets tired of doing it as every other customer wants it.

I’m getting mine done again in a few days and have no idea what to go for. If in doubt, I tend to go burgundy or a dark red, but I’m also wondering about embracing greige again.

Jesus, there are some miserable fuckers on here.

Agreed!

If you ask me the most ageing thing a person can do to themselves is tell everyone else they're not allowed to do something fun over a certain age 😆

FlatWhiteExtraHot · 22/12/2025 07:43

Oh what a surprise. COD does one of her drive-bys to tell us we’re all naff 🙄.

Those of you who get gel toe nails, can I ask why? Genuine, non-judgemental question. I just wonder because it's not like toe nails chip and arent they are a pain to remove? Is it to match your finger nails?

I do wonder why gel polush companies dont do a matching non-gel colour. Then people can do quick touch ups at home between appointments or do their toes.

Some of them do. OPI and Gelish do, I think.

I might do gel toes for holidays if I'm going to be in and out of the pool/sea to avoid chipping but generally I just use normal polish and it lasts till I take it off again.

I hadn’t realised that looking at lots of pics would give me the heebee geebees, like a kind of morbid fascination to keep looking. I admire the fact that people have the time / money / energy to get them done and from a distance they look tidy and give a ‘well groomed’, I am disappointingly scruffy. but close up they all look so plasticky and fake, especially when there is a bit of nail showing at the base it sets my teeth on edge. I think it is something about the thickness of the gel stuff. Normal home painted nails don’t make me feel this. It’s not in a snobby way or judgemental way - I’d like to like them but they are just weird, it’s more of a physical reaction! And I can’t stop looking at them on people, luckily I don’t know many people who get the done! Especially freaky are the coloured tips which, to me, look like the person has been scratching/ gouging something and not cleaned their nails. Really long ones just look completely stupid and impractical.

For the reason that thankfully not everyone likes or wants the same thing. Maybe it's the only nice treat some people do for themselves. There will be all sorts of reasons you may not understand.

For an e.g I will tell you why I started with salon gel. I use my hands a lot for work, so how my nails look wasn't really the top priority. But one day I lifted a heavy box and 3 of my natural nails caught under the edge and all three ripped from half way down my nail. To say it was excruciatingly painful was an understatement. I didn't know whether I wanted to cry or vomit.

So the only way to protect them was to cover them up with a biab until they grew out. And I was so terrified of that happening again, I just kept it up as my nails could withstand so much more as my nails were now strengthened.

But long story short I have the biab off now as i just want to see what state they are in and to see if normal polish done at home will work for the protection I need on them. It is a bit of a pain making appointments regularly and the cost is getting a bit much.

But I can still appreciate that having a small change up monthly for some may just be what they need.

Except that really isn’t what happened, is it?

If you buy some of these nail gloves, you can take them off when you're bored with them, and at £5.14 a pair (from Temu) you could have a whole drawerful for different occasions, e.g. Christmas, King's Official Birthday, Halloween, Washing Up, St Michaelmas Day, etc.

Plus, being gloves you could probably paint them yourself.

I hope you have some things in real life to help distract from this “morbid fascination” you have with other people’s finger nails!

Wow I'm amazed that my black tips bring out peoples mean side! I love them and they make me happy. If I see something that isn't my taste I just think 'not for me but it's nice that someone else likes them'. I can't imagine taking time out of my day to post a snide remark!! Enjoy your nails everyone Flowers

I love a black tip. My mum noticed mine once and told me I looked like I’d been gardening. She generally hates my nails (but I don’t think she’d tell me if she ever did like them). So I made a point of showing them off to her and always look forward to hearing her comment negatively on them. I always love them and that’s literally all that matters. I’m happy you love yours too

Judging by the number of people who ask me to show them my nails, a lot of people seem to like being shown them. I have never offered.

Most definitely not a 'fun mum' whatever that actually is. Ask my kids, they will tell you I am a miserable fucker.

SabrinaCarpetCleaner · 22/12/2025 08:12

I stick to the same two colours all year round 😂 A red with orange tones in Spring/Summer, and a classic red in Autumn/Winter. I never get glitter or art (because on the odd occasion I have, I instantly regretted it). It's all just personal choice, fair play to those who go glittery or arty if it makes you happy 😊
These are my short, neat, single shade efforts 😂

Same! It’s literally the one thing I do for me and I enjoy choosing my designs each month. I am a standard, boring mum.

Plus, I go with my mum each month and it’s lovely to get that time together for the last 8 years.

Thanks @Neighull I’ll have a look at those, i like that they are reusable

I always have red glitter for Christmas, it may be boring but it’s my one deviation from the rest of the year when I alternate between black, burgundy and red

Full foils and glitter here and no regrets. I’m a secondary teacher and do lots of work on a visualiser with my classes. So my nails and hands are large on screen a lot! I keep them short as I have lots of animals at home and long just isn’t practical.
I love having them done to sparkle and have different art/styles/colours all year long. I’m my nail lady’s guinea pig for different ideas and I count her as a friend now so it’s even better when we see each other.
The current set I’m sporting are below but tbh the pic doesn’t do the full sparkle justice. The last set were very dark blue with a shimmery purple.
I love seeing all the glitters this time of year and we should all just have what we want tbh. Couldn’t care less if that makes me ‘livelaughlove/I’mabitmadme’!

I’ve gone off gel on my fingers but still have it on my toes because:

I have hip dysplasia and arthritis and don’t find it very comfortable to reach down to my toes for extended periods.

I like having year round pedicures because I’m in bare feet for yoga and Pilates a lot.

I never take it off myself because I go every 5-6 weeks.

Regular polish does chip on my toes because two of my toes do an annoying overlapping thing.

I like supporting my local salon.

Bio Sculpture do polishes to match their gels, but I never match.

Theharmlessone · 22/12/2025 10:11

Resisted the temptation to get glitter again so went back to my fave pink nails!
