I think I'm done with glittery nails at Christmas

I just looked at mine which I only have during December and realised I can't wait to get them off and changed to a plain colour. And it got me thinking, are glittery nails a bit "im a crazy middle-aged mum #LiveLaughlove "?

Nude BIAB with a very subtle glitter and gold stars here ✨

Hard agree with @tumbletoast. At least it seems from the comments that the only people worried about seeming try hard (apart from the OP) are the snobby ones with the dull nails

I also like a bit of Christmas glitter and i don’t care what anyone thinks that say about me. Imagine a grown adult woman being that insecure!

DecemberGoneWild · 21/12/2025 18:51

Love mine but I've had them on for a week and am looking forward to doing myself a nice neutral in a week or so. They are also getting too long for me.

I like glitter though. Albeit a lot more subtle than this normally.

I don't like nail art and am generally not a fan of accent nails.

Mine are being done tomorrow and I’m having just a glossy bright red. Not keen on nail art or tips darker than the rest of the nail. That to me just looks like the nails need a good scrub.

DecemberGoneWild · 21/12/2025 19:04

Also if nail art/glitter/accent nails/3d nails etc bring the wearer happiness in what can be a miserable world then I hope they embrace that and dont give a fuck what anyone else (including me!) thinks.

One of my friends is a nail tech in a salon and every year her regulars come in for their xmas nails all exited to have 'something a bit bold and different' for xmas.

Every year without fail they look at the greens and golds and blues and then pick red glitter or dark red !

My friend orders in loads of red and red glitter in Nov to be ready for it.

She sits painting more or less exclusively red glitter all day for 3 weeks solid 😳

The important thing is she makes them all feel like it's an exciting and great choice, and keeps the huge stock of red glitter polish out of sight 🤪

GinandTonic24 · 21/12/2025 19:13

These were mine for December, must more subtle than I usually have for Christmas! Getting them redone tomorrow and not sure I want anything too intricate now.

I love glitter, nail art, long nails (these are my own). I think some people who only have nudes are trying too hard to be seen as chic and classic...

I'm also wondering if bright neon in the summer is a bit "ooh I'm quirky.
"
Which is sad because I liked it but..

My friend works in fashion and she had neon green in the summer (painted not gel). She’s normally ahead of trends.
I agree the glittery nail thing is ‘Middle aged live laugh love’ but so is getting your nails done with gel full stop.

DecemberGoneWild · 21/12/2025 19:21

"Middle aged live laugh love" or...

Grown up woman finally thinking "screw it, if I want glitter, I'm getting glitter and be damned whether other people approve"?

LemonLeaves · 21/12/2025 19:23

I like a dark red shimmer at this time of year. But without fail I end up catching my nails with the potato peeler - so I tend to go bare, to avoid serving up roast potatoes a la shellac polish 😂

I have gone for purple glitter on my toes instead.

I cant tell whether nails are gel or normal polish. I doubt you can either especially as most normal polish top coats are super shiny.

Enhanments are generally obvious but so what? It doesnt affect my life.

Toottooot · 21/12/2025 19:28

Red sparkly/glittery nails start mid November until my January appointment where I’ll go dark reds/burgundies. My festive nails also have a ‘feature/ring finger’ detail. You can get tae if you think it’s tacky.

Tryingatleast · 21/12/2025 19:30

It’s winter solstace, my brain is already going to spring and dusty pink colours! I think
we’re over Christmas already op!!!

You can always tell because they look lumpy.

op asked for opinions and I gave mine, that’s all. It doesn’t affect my life either. If they’re happy then great.

3luckystars · 21/12/2025 19:35

I used to love the glitter and now I hate it. I don’t know what’s come over me.

DecemberGoneWild · 21/12/2025 19:35

Edited

They only look lumpy if they are done poorly. Badly done nails look, well, bad regardless of the medium. Well done gels dont look lumpy or bumpy.

I'm not getting defensive about gels btw. I have no opinion on them.

However I very much dislike this "all women who do x are trashy" or "women who do x over the age of 21 must think they are youneek and cRaZy".

iCod · 21/12/2025 19:47

I don't care what other people think. I just think I do look like one of those people.

I love sparkle any time of the year, sometimes like some nail art too. I had these gold sparkly nails for my masters graduation at Exeter uni last weekend. Luckily I stopped giving a fuck about what others think of me in my early 30s so now, at 43, I have sparkle whenever I want sparkle.

Mine are gel black from October to March. Goes with everything.

Alpacajigsaw · 21/12/2025 19:54

I like glitter, accent nail, nail art etc - I’m 52

that said I just do my own now and they are currently burgundy, I put a kind of shimmery top coat on them which has come out with a slight gold fleck. They look quite nice, but I think I might do a green glitter for the big day itself.

stclementine · 21/12/2025 19:55

Mine are currently glittery and cats eye and although I love them I can’t wait until my Jan appt when I can go all dark and plain 😂

Branleuse · 21/12/2025 19:57

Glitter polish is harder wearing than normal colours. My nails aren't very strong, so my nail artist suggested glitter bases.
It's not just for Christmas.
Glitter is for life.

andfinallyhereweare · 21/12/2025 20:07

I know exactly what you mean that’s why I went for this colour with glitter- I’m in Australia so feel weird getting a dark colour in summer, but happy enough with the subtle glitter

BananagramBadger · 21/12/2025 20:40

I was just debating which nails to go with and you helped me to decide on the glittery ones - I use the nail stickers that you cure under a lamp, they’ll last until new years when I’ll go back to ‘grown up’ nails again. Life’s too short to be limited by other people’s seasonal aesthetics 😁
