Barrel style jeans - wtf?

I've been seeing these all over the place and I just don't understand who would look good in them? Maybe it's because I'm short and on the dumpier side so can't imagine anything less flattering to me, but I don't think they look good on any of the advertising I've seen either? Am I officially old now?

My Zara barrel jeans outfit arrived today. The shirt has lovely buttons and is very fitted.
love it! Material very soft and jeans look better than in picture.
I’m 60, size 8, 5’2…love a bit of ‘on trend’ and don’t really care what other people think.

There’s a big difference between the silhouettes created by skinnies and flares.

I am petite, have quite an athletic figure, shortish legs but a good bum. Skinnies show off my shape. Flares make my bum look bigger for some reason, then cut off my legs at the wrong point and manage to make me short and dumpy, even at a size 6. Slightly better with heels but still really not my most flattering jean.

I actually hardly ever wear skinnies now (more often wide leg as they are more ‘in’). But I definitely saw French women wearing them last autumn, with ballet flats and little cardigans or short jumpers. So they’re not dead.

I was very disappointed with Parisian women’s style - I think I was expecting too much, the men were sometimes impressive though.

I have a couple of pairs of the ankle grazer carrot leg jeans which I like - they're not as extreme as the horseshoe ones. But I struggle with what shoes to wear them with. And we're wearing socks now, right?

I've just bought a pair of these thanks to this thread, and think they look good with ankle boots. Might also try them with brogues and socks..?

Tho now I'm wondering what the difference is between the M&S carrot ankle grazers, and the M&S horseshoe ones pictured upthread which also look good... arggghhhh Confused

HBGKC · 22/02/2025 13:55

@miIIicant those are nice... and v similar to the M&S carrots at £39.50! You could order a pair of those to compare, and maybe save yourself a bundle?

Floisme · 22/02/2025 14:47

Love those Toast ones @miIIicant

I've bought both Toast and M&S jeans although not in this style (my barrel legs were Uniqlo). I think that M&S jeans are great value, especially if you're trying out a new shape for the first time and / or you're on an M&S kind of budget. However, if you know you like the shape and that you'll wear them loads, and if you can afford Toast, then I then I think that as a general rule, their jeans are normally in a sturdier denim that will hold the shape better. I think they're also likely to be better cut as they've been putting out this style for a long time so they know what they're doing.

I used to love my ra-ra skirts back in the 80s. Not sure if I could carry them off these days but would give it a go!

I didn’t have the legs for them 😭

Being petite with a slim waist but curvy behind, I've recently discovered barrel leg jeans and LOVE them!! I've brought Hush ones.

That’s me too. Sometimes something just works and barrel jeans work for our shape.

I’ve tried barrel jeans 3 times now and sent every pair back! Can’t get them to look good on me!!

Well like everything there's barrel legs & then there is the much safer high street interpretation. Actual barrel legs are pretty hard to wear, lots of the high street versions are just an updated boyfriend jean & pretty easy to pull off.

The ones are on the right are horseshoe shaped rather than barrel-legged.

Barrel legs aren't new. I think it was Flosime who said she first picked up a pair in Uniqlo 7 years ago. And that's true. They've been a around for some time now, so hardly new. They're a variation of carrot leg, tapered and mom jeans. All are incredibly similar, only the names really change along with proportions. However, the basic shape and idea of them doesn't change. In fact, and I know I have said this on other threads but my mum wore these cuts of trousers in the 80s, purchased from Kenzo, Joseph and Armani. They're a really classic shape, designed to look great on a variety of shaped women.

These jeans are now so ubiquitous, that they are at saturation point and are appearing across the high street in all stores including supermarkets. At this point, the more expensive brands exaggerate the shape as a way to distance themselves.

FlySafely · 18/04/2025 03:30

I think theyre more for people who like to follow fashion trends, not so much for the renegades that wear what flatters their shape AND is comfy. Honestly, some people will wear whatever is on trend and is popular with the “in” crowd… even if it means looking bow legged and a bit like the little people in , “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”. Reminds me of, “The Emperor’s New Clothes”, lol!

I bought the TU one’s after all the rave reviews on here. They look awful on me, but I am short. Think you need a bit more height than my 5ft 1 to pull them off. I never got round to returning them in time, so am stuck with them. Will have to donate to a charity shop.

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 18/04/2025 06:25

They don’t suit anyone that’s the joke.

handsdownthebest · 18/04/2025 06:52

I'm 5'2, size 8 and love mine. They are from Zara and a dark wash. very comfortable and I like the look. Styling them is maybe not as easy. Shoes can't be too heavy. So far I've worn them with brown suede loafers, white t-shirts and shortish jacket. I also have the matching shirt, like I showed in my previous post above.
I might have a go at wearing them with trainers today. I like the way they fit through the hips and waist and come out at the legs.

justmeandmyselfandi · 18/04/2025 06:56

I think this one of the inventions created as a joke to see who would be stupid enough to fall for it

Well we have to agree to disagree. I am also at the 'no fucks given' age and still love trying different styles and fashions.

Myengagementring · 18/04/2025 07:39

I've got the Tu barrel leg jeans and have just bought another pair as I'm constantly in them. I'm 5ft 7 with an hourglass figure, really narrow waist and big hips and thighs and they are the most flattering jeans in me. I recently wore them for a city break and I usually hate photos of myself but the ones where I am wearing these jeans I'm happy with, they can be flattering I just think they have to be the right pair on the right body shape, like everything. Skinny jeans look awful on me, I look like a carrot 🤣

Right there with you - I don't take clothing too seriously, in the sense that if my arse looks bigger than normal the world doesn't end - I am not loved any less by family and friends. It's quite liberating, not being in constant pursuit of clothing that makes me look smaller. I'm an hourglass and I am no longer ashamed of having wide hips - I wish I could go back and tell my younger self - I am shaped like this because I'm a woman, there should be nothing to diminish.
