Barrel style jeans - wtf?

I've been seeing these all over the place and I just don't understand who would look good in them? Maybe it's because I'm short and on the dumpier side so can't imagine anything less flattering to me, but I don't think they look good on any of the advertising I've seen either? Am I officially old now?

@Suzuki I know those jeans are labelled as barrel by White Stuff but they look more straight than any other shape 🤔

Yeah, they’re not barrel shaped.

They have an unfortunate looking crotch area though. Not flattering on the model.

If you can look great in skinny jeans you will look great in anything. Wide leg, straight leg, flares and barrels are more forgiving. Palazzo and horseshoe are more extreme and mostly for fashionistas!

This isn’t true. I look fab in skinnies but flares are awful on me.

I find barrel cut flattering and a welcome update from dreaded skinnies - which are now a fashion crime.

I was in Paris a few months ago and loads of younger Parisian women were wearing skinnies.

If it’s good enough for them it’s good enough for me.

TizerorFizz · 20/02/2025 22:56

How can there be much difference in jeans with a flare at the bottom or skin tight at the bottom? Both are skin tight higher up. Unless you are short of course which make flares a bit questionable. Even then flares with heels are flattering. The exciting thing about fashion is embracing change and new ideas. Not staying in a rut for 20 years.

Looking at Paris Fashion week, hardly any skinny trousers on show. A few but mostly slouchy. Paris streets are full of non Parisians.

They remind me of the 80s, will RaRa skirts and those Reebok hi-top trainers with the two velcro straps at the top be back in fashion next?

My 14 year old is wearing those hi-tops, yes. No ra-ra skirts yet though

mightymam · 21/02/2025 01:57

As someone with thunder thighs, I love barrel leg!

genericbrunette · 21/02/2025 05:05

I love them!

potato shaped 5'8"

I have the Tu ones and the Next ones

Nonstopnoise · 21/02/2025 05:22

I’ve been wearing them for about 7 years now - I have a narrow waist normal hips and big thighs and I’m tall - you can’t tell what thigh and what’s fabric. I like their shape, boot legs look hideous on me - hourglass legs - no thanks! And skinnies give me carrot legs. I’m happier as a barrel!😁

There’s a big difference between the silhouettes created by skinnies and flares.

I am petite, have quite an athletic figure, shortish legs but a good bum. Skinnies show off my shape. Flares make my bum look bigger for some reason, then cut off my legs at the wrong point and manage to make me short and dumpy, even at a size 6. Slightly better with heels but still really not my most flattering jean.

I actually hardly ever wear skinnies now (more often wide leg as they are more ‘in’). But I definitely saw French women wearing them last autumn, with ballet flats and little cardigans or short jumpers. So they’re not dead.

BobnLen · 21/02/2025 07:17

I'm tall and old, they don't suit me, mainly because they are supposed to be a bit short which just looks like I haven't been able to buy jeans long enough

BobnLen · 21/02/2025 07:18

I suit flares much better than skinnies as my calves are thin so flares balance it out a bit

TizerorFizz · 21/02/2025 09:44

What is the difference between skinnies and flares around your bum? Not noticed anything. I’m taller and really didn’t like skinnies. Now I have some flares again. These styles create a different silhouette and choose what suits you. Only women with great legs really suit skinnies. Any lumps and bumps show. Dark flares are way more forgiving. Very few skinnies around on catwalks though. As I said, mostly draped or wider styles. Obviously not everyone will suit these either but I’m glad skinnies are not the only Jean available right now!

Dragonfly97 · 21/02/2025 09:55

Really wanted to love these, as I've been wearing relaxed skinnies for years. I ordered a pair from M&S to try, in black, they looked great on the model; cool, edgy, not on me though!! I'm short, and they drowned me, they were like sails, huge! I bought the correct size, what a disappointment. I'll be sticking to skinnies and bootleg.

I used to love my ra-ra skirts back in the 80s. Not sure if I could carry them off these days but would give it a go!

@XxSideshowAuntSallyx I was in Primark last weekend and they had ra-ra skirts! I remember cos I pointed them out to my daughter.

Ygfrhj · 21/02/2025 10:06

I love them but as a short person unless I buy from petites they look awful because the shaping hits in the wrong places. But if they fit right they are very flattering on my short figure!

Completelyjo · 21/02/2025 10:18

Rara skirts are on the market every spring summer, it’s definitely not just an 80s thing.

moonshinepoursthroughmywindow · 21/02/2025 10:25

I think they look best on people who are fattish but with a defined waist. They swamp thinner people and I didn't think they suited me (fattish but not much waist) the one time I tried some on. They'd also have to be exactly the right length as they wouldn't be easy to alter or even roll up.

The thing is... we are all talking about them like there's only one kind of barrel leg. There are loads (many with less volume, different rises, etc) so may be worth trying some others. It's like writing off t shirts because one I tried on had a weird neckline.

Quietly folds skinnies away.

OP you are not officially old as you are still giving a hoot about being in fashion.

I've never given a hoot about fashion. I know many women 20 years older than me who absolutely care about whether they are fashionable or not. It has nothing at all to do with age!

Runingoncaffeine · 21/02/2025 18:51

Feel like you need a very slim waist to carry them off!!

Purpl · 21/02/2025 19:04

Inspired by the other thread I bought the TU ones. Absolutely awful. Had fun striking ridiculous model poses in them though (and they still looked rubbish).

But then I never liked skinny jeans either. I've stuck with bootleg and straight.

Me too they were returned !!

henlake7 · 21/02/2025 19:10

I think a lot of this is 'they don't suit me......therefore they don't suit anybody!'.

I don't think I've seen a style of jean that not a single person could pull off.
I mean mom jeans Def don't suit me but that's a me issue, other people look good in them.
