Barrel style jeans - wtf?

I've been seeing these all over the place and I just don't understand who would look good in them? Maybe it's because I'm short and on the dumpier side so can't imagine anything less flattering to me, but I don't think they look good on any of the advertising I've seen either? Am I officially old now?

I like them and have a couple of pears. I love all the different styles of trousers around at the moment. I have no skinnies.
I don’t dress to be flattering though, I like interesting shapes and creative styles.

mewkins · 19/02/2025 17:29

They look terrible on websites. Really comical. But I have some which I roll up (similar to some Cos ones from several years ago) that just look like really nice casual slightly baggy jeans. They are super barrel ones from H and M and are great for every day wear. There is nothing super barrelled about them 😆 they are just nice jeans.

museumum · 19/02/2025 17:30

Depends what you mean by 'flatter'. It's such a strange concept. I don't really need people to see the shape of my legs. And I've not got much interested in trying to pretend they are longer or thinner than they really are.
I think they give an interesting silhouette that's a bit of a change from the shapes that went before.... but then I also like Toast style drapey things and they don't 'flatter' in the traditional sense either. <shrug>

CitizenZ · 19/02/2025 17:33

They are horrendous!

Yatzydog · 19/02/2025 17:40

I need to see what they look like in real life. When the denim has collapsed a bit and teamed with normal clothes. Not styled for a website. But until then, they look like the wind would carry you away.

Hideous.

According to today's Times2 fashion page, it's all about straight jeans now.

Straight up: normal jeans are back
Sienna Miller is championing a return to classic denims, but don’t ditch those barrel-legs yet, says Harriet Walker

Next year there will be some other shape of jeans being promoted...

RingofBrodgar · 19/02/2025 17:50

I really like them. I have a black pair (look dark grey) from Next and a pair of carpenter jeans from Uniqlo which are similar in shape. The shaping is quite subtle in both pairs and I really like them as a change from wide or straight leg. They look good with biker style boots or Mary Jane shoes but not so good with trainers imo

Gymnopedie · 19/02/2025 18:01

They make me wonder where they left the horse.

bringmelaughter · 19/02/2025 18:05

I love finisterre yarrells so much that I now have 3 pairs (denim, black and a browny sort of colour). I’m 47, size 10-12 and you can tell I’ve had children sort of shaped. Maybe you just have to find the right ones (or I’m deluded that they look kind of nice).

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 19/02/2025 18:32

I love them. I am delighted that barrel shaped has reached supermarkets!

I have a narrow waist, hefty thighs and chunky calves, but beautifully turned ankles. The looser fit thigh than any jeans shape for decades works well for me, and the baggy taper is far more flattering than skinny or wide leg.

TheChosenTwo · 19/02/2025 18:35

I’ve only seen them on hangers and mannequins and they give me serious rickets vibes so they’re a no from me.

anon199900 · 19/02/2025 18:39

I love them and I am 40. I’m slim though but I have wide hips so they work well for me.

trainermush · 19/02/2025 18:39

Well like everything there's barrel legs & then there is the much safer high street interpretation. Actual barrel legs are pretty hard to wear, lots of the high street versions are just an updated boyfriend jean & pretty easy to pull off.

They don't seem to look like that irl though (bow legged). They kind of fit normally I guess because unless the fabric it really stiff, it quickly fits the leg rather than stands out at the side.

BatInATopHat · 19/02/2025 18:41

I don't mind them. I'm quite short and a size 8-10 and they're probably not the most flattering of styles but with a close fitting top and trainers, they're ok and they're comfortable

trainermush · 19/02/2025 18:42

are just an updated boyfriend jean

edited to add mom jean to the above.

Jurassicpark1234 · 19/02/2025 18:49

I have a couple of these from Everlane and they are so comfortable! https://www.everlane.com/products/womens-utility-arc-pant-organic-bone They are modelled by different sized women to give you an idea

See the second photo is just ridiculous IMO. Definitely Emperor's New Clothes vibe.

I don't religiously follow fashion and make a lot of my own clothes but why would anyone wear something that looks this ridiculous?

I have a pair of M&S carrot jeans which are similar to barrel cut, and they are SO flattering. I say this as someone with wide hips and a small waist who is usually paranoid about looking fat. I think the volume makes me look thinner, somehow. Certainly I feel way slimmer and more attractive in them than in my one remaining pair of skinny jeans, which I barely wear these days - and the barrel cut ones are way comfier, too!

Same, they are so unbelievably comfy.

the second pair are horseshoe jeans. Not barrel

Branleuse · 19/02/2025 19:17

i have been wearing barrel jeans for a few years and they are my favourite shape for jeans.

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 19/02/2025 19:32

I've never heard of horseshoe jeans and that is the shape I've seen in supermarkets. Maybe I'm just square but I know I'd look utterly ridiculous on those so I'll stick with being square

CutOffTheThorns · 19/02/2025 19:38

I’m yet to see them look good on anyone.

Barrenfieldoffucks · 19/02/2025 19:40

I quite like them, but I don't necessarily look for flattering as a criteria on its own.

henlake7 · 19/02/2025 19:42

I didn't use to like them but having tied on a couple of pairs I finally found some that I liked (a subtle barrel can be very flattering and quite comfy).
I'm average height and size 8/10 but I'm quite muscly without many curves, I find barrel jeans give me abit more of a curvy shape. Plus I love any trousers with a loose leg, not a fan of squashing my legs into something like a sausage in a skin!
