Barrel style jeans - wtf?

I've been seeing these all over the place and I just don't understand who would look good in them? Maybe it's because I'm short and on the dumpier side so can't imagine anything less flattering to me, but I don't think they look good on any of the advertising I've seen either? Am I officially old now?

Very happy to admit that flattering to me means shoring my actual shape rather than adding 2 stone.

Who wants to look fatter? I don't think anyone does.

fiorentina · 20/02/2025 10:07

I like mine. I’m fairly tall and slim and I think they add shape to an outfit, but you have to balance them with a more fitted top or tucked in jumper/shirt, not just a whole baggy look, unless you want to look like a Cos model.

Just wear jeans you prefer, there are so many alternative styles out there on the high street.

Fabric matters too, makes a big difference on how they hang as well as warmth. Like the thick and fairly heavy denim of these Levis XL Balloon Jeans

I love these! I am not so sure about shoes though, what do people wear with this shape?

trainermush · 20/02/2025 10:32

I only have cropped ones, I was wearing them with ballet/mary janes & sandals. Winter i've been wearing them with socks & trainers.

BeaAndBen · 20/02/2025 10:34

They are so comfortable!

I got a pair for about £12 from Sainsbury’s in the sale. I hadn’t bought jeans in a supermarket before, I thought they’d be awful. However, at £12 I thought it worth a pint.

The denim is much less stretchy than most cheap jeans and is ridiculously comfortable.

people are different shapes though arent they. My thighs are quite chunky compared to my waist.

It doesnt look like im 2 stone heavier, because you can clearly see that im wearing baggy jeans.
If people think I look like ive got big thighs in these jeans, then thats probably because ive got big thighs. There are no jeans that make me look like ive got slim legs. I used to worry so much about the size of my thighs, and it was a waste of time.

Baggy Barrel jeans. A tshirt, a long cardi or hoodie. Chunky trainers. My weekend uniform

I'm still in skinnies mainly as they are the only Jean that I can still wear if I put a few pounds on which I have. I forced myself today to try on some new styles which included the barrel Jean in Next. I have to say once I got over the initial hmm they were OK. They have features I wish more jeans had. They are small at the waist and curve over the hips. I think they need to be very high cotton content though like 1 or 0% so I am still looking. I think it's a useful Jean to own.

Edited

1% cotton?

D20 · 20/02/2025 11:47

I bought some on the back of the very same thread this time last year. I love them and I’m glad I bought them. They’ve been even more useful over winter when widelegs would trail on wet ground. I look awesome in them.

One thing I don’t look awesome wearing is the bitchy comments on this thread. It’s okay to say you don’t like something or that you wouldn’t wear them but this bizarre
‘this will only look good on thin people’
‘this will only look good on tall people’
‘this will only look good on 20 somethings’
is tedious. Those posters don’t look that great spouting this shit either.

It’s not clothes that make people look fat. It’s bad food choices…but that’s a different topic altogether

1% cotton?

Haha I mean 1% elastane.

HettyMeg · 20/02/2025 12:11

Oh I feel the same, I must be old too as I think they look awful even on the models online. Each to their own

LaughingCat · 20/02/2025 12:33

Ritzybitzy · 20/02/2025 09:53

They aren’t the same style.

Yeah, worked that out further up the thread. Quite glad, was a bit shocked by the baggies hate 😂

You don’t need to wear skin tight clothes to not appear fatter.

I don’t have an issue with my weight so I have no issue if something looser, oversized etc makes me appear “fatter”. Not that I think it does anyway.

redstripestar · 20/02/2025 14:13

I just bought the M&S barrel leg trousers in black (the work ones not the jeans ones). A revelation!

They have belt hoops which is always handy as my weight fluctuates. They have darts at the back so the waist is nicely fitted. They are then shaped and roomier around the hips and thighs - my widest part. Unlike most work trousers they don't flatten and aren't tight behind - a look I don't really want. I have a small waist, wider high hips and even wider low hips- these skim over all of that, accentuating my smaller waist and balancing with my wide shoulders. They are tapered at the ankle slightly and the length of the regular (I am 5.6) is perfect. They will look good with white trainers, chunky loafers, smart loafers, ankle boots. They work with fairly plain tops as the bottom half is more the point of interest. I feel a bit stylish and definitely more contemporary/modern. Oh and they are super comfortable too. It's like wearing nothing, or a bit like a skirt comfort wise.

And they were only £40.

I tried on the sailor crepe trousers in Jigsaw for £130- lovely but no belt hoops and as always I was between bloody sizes due to my hips.

RobinEllacotStrike · 20/02/2025 15:03

I got a pair of the Tu ones & I love them - really roomy & comfy and I will be able to wear them in warmer weather than other jeans as they are airy.

RobinEllacotStrike · 20/02/2025 15:05

My teenage daughters tell me I rock them - and they are super fickle & picky, and also have quite good taste. They are both very comfortable to tell me "OMG What are you thinking?" or even just "NO MUM NO!"

ChristmasRoses · 20/02/2025 15:31

mogtheexcellent · 19/02/2025 16:33

Inspired by the other thread I bought the TU ones. Absolutely awful. Had fun striking ridiculous model poses in them though (and they still looked rubbish).

But then I never liked skinny jeans either. I've stuck with bootleg and straight.

Me too! They looked hideous. The TU wide leg cargo ones on the other hand are really nice, I'm wearing them now!

Suzuki76 · 20/02/2025 15:35

I have these. Robyn from White Stuff. I am genuinely baffled that some people think this cut of jean screams "escapee clown".

Barrel style jeans - wtf?
Cantonet · 20/02/2025 15:41

@Suzuki I know those jeans are labelled as barrel by White Stuff but they look more straight than any other shape 🤔

bumblingbovine49 · 20/02/2025 15:41

I absolutely love the fact that so much fashion is comfortable nowadays. Lots of baggy trousers and trainers with skirts. It is truly fantastic !. When I rememeber how uncomfortable I was most of the time in the clothes I wore in my youth it does my heart good to know that many young women don't have to do that any more if they don't want to. There seem to be so many lengths and fit of skirt that are ok to weara and shapes of trousers. Long may it last

StElse · 20/02/2025 15:48

I look great in them, but I can't gain weight to save my life, and anything that makes me look like I don't have skinny legs is fab with me.

Agree with PP that the top has to be fitted. I will never know why COS insist on swamping anything their model may have that approaches a figure.

trainermush · 20/02/2025 15:51

@Suzuki76 because people don't think of that version when picturing this denim shape.

YesImawitch · 20/02/2025 15:53

Those just look like normal 7/8 tapered leg jeans @Suzuki76
People are talking about Horseshoe which for some reason has been renamed barrel leg

Barrel style jeans - wtf?
trainermush · 20/02/2025 15:54

White Stuff has called that shape barrel leg because it is slightly tapered. That's what I mean by safe versions and of course retailers need their version when people are searching for the new shape of jeans.

Me too. Skinny jeans look old fashioned to me now.
