Barrel style jeans - wtf?

I've been seeing these all over the place and I just don't understand who would look good in them? Maybe it's because I'm short and on the dumpier side so can't imagine anything less flattering to me, but I don't think they look good on any of the advertising I've seen either? Am I officially old now?

I like them. Some of the teen's friends wear them and look fabulous. It's possibly a good shape for me as my hips and legs are narrow, but big boobs so I'd like the balancing effect Grin Except I don't like wearing jeans, so I'll never actually try them!

I much prefer them to skinny jeans, which I think it's the hardest shape to pull off by a long way.

Porcelainpig · 20/02/2025 16:10

I think anything wide leg is difficult if you are a short arse like me. I used to like wide leg jeans as a younger lady, but now all these young girls are wearing them I'm wondering what I was thinking back then. Drank puddles too. I always had wet trousers.😂

80smonster · 20/02/2025 16:13

I find barrel cut flattering and a welcome update from dreaded skinnies - which are now a fashion crime.

Porcelainpig · 20/02/2025 16:16

Skinniest aren't a fashion crime if you don't follow fashion. What is wrong with wearing what suits your shape?

TizerorFizz · 20/02/2025 16:20

If you can look great in skinny jeans you will look great in anything. Wide leg, straight leg, flares and barrels are more forgiving. Palazzo and horseshoe are more extreme and mostly for fashionistas!

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 20/02/2025 16:38

I love them. Like a number of PP I have a small waist with chunkier lower abdomen and thighs. I'm also short. Barrel or horseshoe are extremely flattering as they show off my waist and then skim the bits I'd rather not highlight. Loose bottom half and fitted top is a million times better for me than baggy top and skinnies. I actually think this is one of the few trends that looks better on non-models. Models have long thin thighs and barrel doesn't do anything for them.

Are these the jeans that bow in the midleg? Sometimes called Balloon jeans?
I saw some in a magazine the other day and scared the dog by inadvertantly bellowing "What the Hell?!" in disbelief - I'm short and dumpy and they'd look beyond horrendous on me but my sister is tall and slim and they'd make her look like she has Ricketts

YesImawitch · 20/02/2025 16:56

I have agree with you but I've also never seen a single person in RL wearing them @AddictedToBooks

Everything I see them the theme tune to Rawhide goes through my head

Rollin rollin rollin, keep them dawgies rollin Rawhide !

I don't follow fashion so I'm not ever going to yell 'fashion crime' at anyone 😂but skinny jeans are literally the hardest jeans shape to pull off imo, though everyone seems to think otherwise!

Skinny jeans give such odd proportions - I think a high waist and narrow top-half silhouette helps, but I think most people look WAY better in other jeans shapes.

BeesAndCrumpets · 20/02/2025 17:07

Abercrombie Barrel jeans are LIFE. I am usually dress awfully for my shape (IMO) and I'm conscious of making 'safe choices' and feeling so much frumpier than I should for my personality. I'm 5ft2.5, and a size 14/16. I tried them after a very tiny friend wore them and I thought let's give them a go. I've LOVED wearing them. More than anything else in my wardrobe!

I have legs shaped like a doner kebab \ / for additional info :)

RestlessSparrow · 20/02/2025 17:31

Tapered jeans/trousers have been around for decades and that's what the "safe" options are, as far as I can see. I remember them in the 90's and also the more exaggerated "ragga style" joggers from my teens.

Some of them also put me immediately in mind of the infamous Billy Connelly sketch...

Kissedbyfire1 · 20/02/2025 17:34

I’ve got 2 pairs of the uniqlo ones which aren’t too extreme and I love them. Get loads of compliments and people asking where to get them. They are very flattering to a menopausal body! I’m 61.

tealightning · 20/02/2025 18:29

I have a couple of pairs of the ankle grazer carrot leg jeans which I like - they're not as extreme as the horseshoe ones. But I struggle with what shoes to wear them with. And we're wearing socks now, right?

Barrel style jeans - wtf?
notwavingbutdrowning1 · 20/02/2025 18:57

I've recently bought the M&S horseshoe jeans in black - quite similar to barrel but a more exaggerated shape. I always thought it was a style I couldn't wear but I love them so much. My waist looks tiny, my legs look slim - god knows how, given the baggy material, but they do - and they have real panache. Definitely recommended. The pictures don't do them justice.

I'm almost tempted to try a pair now. Will post photos if I do!

yep

TizerorFizz · 20/02/2025 19:35

I think the M&S horseshoe are not extreme. They are pretty wearable.

Ohshutupdavidyoutwat · 20/02/2025 19:41

I think these white M&S ones look amazing on this lady who is over 70!

Me too! Even us 69 year olds can look great!

Cantonet · 20/02/2025 20:27

I follow this account on Instagram.
I love it as the Mum is very elegant and always looks so happy at spending time with her daughter.

BananaWoman999 · 20/02/2025 20:38

Some shapes look ridiculous on the models, agree.

I've not seen anyone walking the streets looking like the have rickets though, so I'm assuming those who are wearing them are wearing the less extreme versions (or as others have said, they soon shape to the wearers body).

I have a Tu pair and they are so bloody comfy. Do they make my legs/waist/legs look skinny? Nope, because they're not 🤣. Do they look terrible? I hope not, because I'm going to wear them anyway!

henlake7 · 20/02/2025 20:39

I think barrel jeans rarely look good on models because they are usually standing straight on and the jeans look almost starched stiff. They look like their legs won't even bend properly.
They are one of those rare items of clothing that actually look better on a real person in real life IMO.

XxSideshowAuntSallyx · 20/02/2025 20:53

They remind me of the 80s, will RaRa skirts and those Reebok hi-top trainers with the two velcro straps at the top be back in fashion next?

tillyandmilly · 20/02/2025 20:57

I love them - an upmarket brand Oska have been doing these style of trousers for years and are very popular- I bought some from Zara recently they are cropped barrel denim ones - I love them I am a size 18 👍
