Help me pick the better boots

DreadPirateRobots · 15/11/2024 14:29

Pls help me make a choice of no consequence just for fun.

Hobbs Farrah black boots

or

Whistles Piper black boots?

I like both. My instinct is that the Whistles ones have a bit more chunkiness and now fashion cred, but the Hobbs ones might have more longevity precisely because they are a bit less overtly of the moment.

Hit me.

@familysquare I would wear them on my feet 😂

SweetSugarPlum · 20/11/2024 20:30

I prefer the Hobbs, too much of a chunk on the others for me, especially as I have chicken ankles.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 20/11/2024 20:33

So @DreadPirateRobots now they’ve arrived, which looks best on?

I read your OP and thought “she wants the Whistles ones but thinks the Hobbs ones are the more sensible choice.” Problem with doing the sensible choice is you won’t love them, whereas the ones you really love, you’ll be more joyful when you are wearing them, it’s likely you’ll wear them more often, and you will continue to wear them when they aren’t in fashion anymore if you still love them. (So you’ll get your moneys worth, even if fashions change.)

bur as you have ordered both, which makes your heart sing when you wear them?

It's actually not that! I have zero problem going with my likes and how something looks beats "practical" for me anyday. There's something subtle and interesting about the look of the Hobbs ones I find compelling.

I didn't have time to pick up the boots today but verily I will report back when I have.

Whistles. Not a fan of the Hobbs.

Yuckyyuckyuckity · 21/11/2024 00:30

Whistles, they're a bit less meh than the Hobbs ones

BurgundyBear · 21/11/2024 00:50

Hobbs.

raspberryripplecheesecake · 21/11/2024 14:10

Hobbs.

Grabyourpassportandmyhand · 21/11/2024 16:43

Whistles.

Rude.

100% rude

I have knee issues and am flat footed as well. Ecco boots look respectable, are well made and incredibly comfortable and provide proper support for lots of walking.

Have you looked at these?

MrsPositivity1 · 21/11/2024 18:50

Whistles

I prefer those to either in the OP.

Those are lovely

The buckle is a rather erm...... interesting look.

They aren't anything like the style the OP is after.

Itoldyousoo · 21/11/2024 19:44

@Grabyourpassportandmyhand the buckle? They're just pretty standard boots 🤷‍♀️

I looked at those a few months ago as I liked the shape, but I couldn’t get over my hatred of buckles. And they’d have almost certainly been too narrow for me.

I don't really get it - boots that look very like Docs (apart from buckle) - but aren't. 😂

But this is why I read this section with wonder generally.

AllTangledUpInTinselAndTiaras · 22/11/2024 08:06

They're quite different from Docs! It's quite obvious to me.

Maybe this is why some people can't understand why you might want 20 different coats.

KirstenBlest · 22/11/2024 08:14

They're not like Docs!

ImNotThereAmI · 22/11/2024 08:14

Completely different from docs. DM’s to me, have a very specific look which is not just a chunky boot, and you either like them or you don’t. They’ve also got a longstanding image if you are of a certain age, I’m in my 40’s and I wore them in my teens as part of my “ grungy alternative” look. I can’t shake that and would never wear them now as that’s not my look at all. Whilst they have become much more mainstream now and worn by lots of people, they are still favoured by those with an alternative look. They’re not just a black chunky boot that everyone likes that go with everything.

AmberCritic · 22/11/2024 08:16

Hobbs

DreadPirateRobots · 22/11/2024 08:18

This is one of the many ways in which Mumsnet is and has been an education for me! It wouldn't have instinctively occurred to me that some people have no eye for detail in clothing and fashion and just see "several pairs of black boots" and I'm like... can't you see that the detailing gives them quite a different vibe and aesthetic.😁

KirstenBlest · 22/11/2024 08:29

It makes me wonder why they look at the thread at all.

Jaehee · 22/11/2024 08:38

As far as I can see, the only thing they have in common with Docs is that they are:

  1. boots
  2. have laces
