Hey all.
I came out 5 years ago and since then have been slowly finding a style that I feel is authentically me. Historically I was the boss's wife, wearing clothes that were expected of me, that I never felt comfortable in.
My dd is getting married next year, the grooms mum has already started posting huge hats, big dresses, in our wedding planning group. My dd has said you'll wear a fascinator though ( to me ) but eek. It's just not me.
My style is more Cate Blanchet, stylish suits, soft shirts, heels.
I have no idea where to look to find what I have in my mind.
Wedding is monochrome but guests can wear any colour.
I've never been a mother of the bride before. Help.

@princessbear80 that teal velvet suit from M&S is stunning, I've nowhere to where it to but I want it!

I think this hat would look good with the right suit too.

I absolutely LOVE this hat. Gorgeous.

I remembered this outfit from a few years ago on Facebook. Bespoke tailored frock coat, trousers, waistcoat and hat. I tucked that idea away for the future! bespoke

With a teal silk shirt that would look good

Now I want an occasion to wear a teal velvet trouser suit to.
You bad lot!

Me too!!

Cyclistmumgrandma · 04/10/2024 08:28

Son was married recently. I had been given a fascinator but didn't want to wear it. I attached it to my bag which worked as a compromise. I just don't do dresses, so I wore a velvet jumpsuit which I bought second hand.

Google Bianca Jagger Wedding Suit.

That hat and jacket would be fabulous inspiration, with some long wide leg trousers like the Princess of Wales wears.

NamechangeforMOB · 04/10/2024 08:52

I am going to be MOB soon and am having this co-ord shirt/trouser combo made in a Liberty print silk. I will wear it with medium heel pointy ankle boots and absolutely no headwear!

Loving some of the suits linked. For a hat, how about a beret style low on one side. I’m picturing Marlene Dietrich-ish.

Cate Blanchett has great style. Something like a fedora would look very chic with a trouser suit, particularly a wide brimmed one.

Would something like that feel more you?

Cate Blanchett rocked one of the best female tailoring looks I've ever seen doing promo for Oceans 8. https://www.autostraddle.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/cate-willy.jpg?resize=640%2C594

Would definitely suit a nice sharp fedora and maybe a feathered clip to give it the wedding vibe.

I feel you OP. I have a short cut that is buzzed right up one side and I don't recognise myself in a dress at all. I do, however, get frequent compliments on my style (and I wear jumpsuits all the time despite my short little legs - I just get them taken up).

I would wear a trouser suit - in fact if money were no object I might go all in on a made to measure one with waistcoat - and a pillbox hat with small veil, or else a jewelled headpiece I could just mount on my head. Be you and be proud. You are going to look fabulous.

DreadPirateRobots · 04/10/2024 11:11

...and now I also reeeeeally want a velvet suit I can't really justify. 😭

A nice velvet suit justifies itself.

You know, my birthday is coming up.

I am really sorry to say I just ordered this (and the jacket) from La Redoute.
As I don't suit wide trousers they will probably be going back 😭

ohnoi · 04/10/2024 14:24

some sort of fabulous silk suit / raw silk suit sort of thing and something (but not a fascinator maybe) in your hair

or, indeed, anything Cate does

Crikeyisthatthetime · 04/10/2024 16:27

My hair is short and choppy and I hate MoB dresses.
After narrowly avoiding bursting into tears in Hobbs, I asked my daughter if it was ok if I wore my best plain black dress to her wedding with my black leather jacket. No fascinators,no hair clips. She said that's fine.
If that teal trouser suit had been around then I'd have worn it.
I'm not a lesbian. My daughter is though and so is her wife😁

MrsForgetalot · 04/10/2024 16:50

I had a very similar teal velvet suit back in the early naughties and this thread is making me realise how much I miss the old me.

Hmph! Grin

Not seeing the relevance of sexuality to outfit. I’m not lesbian; I have short hair and am just as likely to wear an expensive trouser suit as an expensive dress to a wedding.

The important thing is your budget. Also context (season, locality) and culture of wedding. And whether you want something bold or Mumsnet. (Sorry! Not sorry.)

It's pretty relevant because for a lot of people coming out is linked to a big change of style, which contrasts to the style people associated with them for years, but it's clearly an experience you know very little of, so why comment on it?

Threewheeler1 · 04/10/2024 17:38

I love an old style bib dress shirt and women's cut tux-style wide leg suit.
Bought a nice shirt, 'Adeline' I think it was called from Joules fairly recently. Not a fitted cut (I wanted to find one of those old shirt back elastics to pull it in), but lovely front detailing and a sort of sateen cotton that keeps it's form.
I'd be tempted to go full on and wear spats or black and white brogue flats, 1920's style!
Adore that look 😁

MargaritaPracticallyCan · 04/10/2024 17:47

25 years ago, my MIL wore beautiful wide legged trousers, with a stunning long brocade coat over the top - no hat, simple jewellery, flat shoes. She looked fab and most importantly, it was very much her vibe. Stay true to your style, ditch the fascinator and find something fabulous that you love!

@Brunosmumsy you could also look at Shibumi who make fabulous silk jackets, trousers, coats etc. They offer a made to measure service and have loads of photos on their website of customers wearing their designs. Not everybody is 6’ and size 8 so much more realistic impression of what their designs are like!

I’ve been eyeballing a Shibumi jacket, to go with wide leg trousers for my son’s wedding. Are they any good?

I know everyone hates fascinators, but I like this from Etsy
