Lesbian mother of the bride outfit.

Hey all.
I came out 5 years ago and since then have been slowly finding a style that I feel is authentically me. Historically I was the boss's wife, wearing clothes that were expected of me, that I never felt comfortable in.
My dd is getting married next year, the grooms mum has already started posting huge hats, big dresses, in our wedding planning group. My dd has said you'll wear a fascinator though ( to me ) but eek. It's just not me.
My style is more Cate Blanchet, stylish suits, soft shirts, heels.
I have no idea where to look to find what I have in my mind.
Wedding is monochrome but guests can wear any colour.
I've never been a mother of the bride before. Help.

This is such a great thread. I often have to go to fancy events for work and don't like wearing things that are too traditionally feminine in that context so this has been a great source for ideas! I particularly love the m&s velvet suit above.

Me + Em can be a good source for good tailoring.. I just had a browse and they don't seem to have a great deal of choice in stock at the moment... possibly this one: https://www.meandem.com/fluid-mirco-pleat-wide-leg-trouser-suit-menthol-green

However I imagine they will get a lot more in soon in time for Christmas party season!

Someone else suggested a statement coat. The particular embroidery of this one may not be your style, but I have been lusting after it!

Love this!

Queen Mary of Denmark gives good hat if you Google.

Slightly less flamboyant than Queen Maxima whose hats are mental!

Thank you, yes I was a bit afraid of that response if I'm honest.
I would feel really out of place if I did that.

Nothing more important than feeling like yourself especially on a big day ❤️

Delphiniumandlupins · 03/10/2024 18:35

I'm tall and feel I'm just too big to wear a fascinator. I have always felt they look ridiculous on me. I don't really like hats either but have worn them to a few weddings and find a really big-brimmed hat works. Also, my married DC have said the most important thing was that I wore something that made me happy, rather than fitting some wedding aesthetic

Idontpostmuch · 03/10/2024 18:48

Puzzled as to why you think being a lesbian is relevant. Do all lesbians dress in the same way? I would have thought they would have been like straight women, some liking one style of dress and some liking other styles. Moreover, singling yourself out like that is surely chipping away at hard won equality. However, you sound stylish and the look you describe sounds good. As for where to shop, it's hard to recommend somewhere without knowing your age or budget. Hobbs might be a good choice, or John Lewis. Above all, enjoy the wedding. In the end that's what's important.

Ooft that Veronica Beard suit on the first page 😍

NCfor24 · 03/10/2024 18:56

I like this lady's use of accessories in short hair
.... Some ideas to avoid a fascinator or hat but still be more "done".

I am a celebrant and rarely see hats or fascinators at ceremonies nowadays though I'm civil ceremonies not church so maybe that makes a difference.

Your style sounds great as it is so dont change it just make it an bit more facy than normal.

Mrsredlipstick · 03/10/2024 19:33

You could go all out 20s flapper. Wide leg trousers, waistcoat, silk shirt and the tie from the blouse around your head. Very great Gatsby. Or YSL Le Smoking.
There's another female tailor in Clerkenwell, Susannah Hall.

Good luck.

I was a grooms-woman for my best mate at his wedding. I wore a gorgeous backless navy jumpsuit and heels. I absolutely adore it ! I am also 5 ft 5 with shorter legs than I would like.
The heels lasted all of about 5 minutes because they were so horrendously uncomfortable but I can't wait to wear the jumpsuit again! (Don't know when though!)

Jumpsuits are awesome 👌 (I do adore that teal m&s suit though!)

Notasunnydayhere · 03/10/2024 19:37

This jumpsuit is beautiful on:

WowSpeechless · 03/10/2024 19:38

I would ask your daughter to go fascinator shopping with you - if they don't suit you then even she will come to that conclusion and you could agree together a plan B. Might be easier than just saying no.

eggandonion · 03/10/2024 19:41

Don't go fascinator shopping...go hat hiring! It's a great outing, much better fun than clothes shopping.

OhMyGodAChicken · 03/10/2024 19:43

Brunosmumsy · 03/10/2024 13:46

Oh my. Teal velvet. How gorgeous. Wedding is in February so would work .

I’m sure I’ve seen similar in M&S and Monsoon recently, OP. Absolutely gorgeous ❤️

Not sure what your budget is, but when you said Cate Blanchett I immediately thought of Veronica Beard- for example this is great https://veronicabeard.com/en-gb/products/edia-pant-rose?pageSource=productListing

Tell your DD that nobody wear fascinators anymore!

Edited

I wish I was cool enough to pull this off! OP, you sound like you are. It’s 😍

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 03/10/2024 19:47

Please don’t wear a scarf tied around your head- it’s a wedding, not fancy dress - and you’re not Rambo.

A velvet trouser suit sounds perfect: you could always wear a hair slide of some sort if you felt you had to.

Ineffable23 · 03/10/2024 19:48

I love this thread. This is the best of Mumsnet. And such gorgeous suits 😍

PurBal · 03/10/2024 19:56

Hats look fab but fascinators are dated!

PennyApril54 · 03/10/2024 19:58

Apollo365 · 03/10/2024 13:18

I wonder if you wear some sort of hair clip/slide/fancy ‘thing’ in your short hair instead. If you daughter really wants something.

I think a fascinator can be a really nice accessory and sets your wedding outfit apart from any other event. You can always take it off if you get fed up with it. I think your style sounds great and I hope you have a lovely time and feel 'you' and comfortable in whatever you decide to do for .

I’ll have to do this before I die!

Oh my word. Same.
