Lesbian mother of the bride outfit.

Hey all.
I came out 5 years ago and since then have been slowly finding a style that I feel is authentically me. Historically I was the boss's wife, wearing clothes that were expected of me, that I never felt comfortable in.
My dd is getting married next year, the grooms mum has already started posting huge hats, big dresses, in our wedding planning group. My dd has said you'll wear a fascinator though ( to me ) but eek. It's just not me.
My style is more Cate Blanchet, stylish suits, soft shirts, heels.
I have no idea where to look to find what I have in my mind.
Wedding is monochrome but guests can wear any colour.
I've never been a mother of the bride before. Help.

Now I want an occasion to wear a teal velvet trouser suit to.
You bad lot!

ranchdressing · 03/10/2024 15:44

If money is no object then there is a wonderful female tailor on saville row, you could go and get a custom suit made.

slug · 03/10/2024 15:44

How about a small silk scarf rolled up and worn in a band around your head?

Not sure what your budget is, but when you said Cate Blanchett I immediately thought of Veronica Beard- for example this is great https://veronicabeard.com/en-gb/products/edia-pant-rose?pageSource=productListing

Tell your DD that nobody wear fascinators anymore!

Edited

That is so lovely 👏

The relevance was trying to explain how I'd gone from very boss's wife dresses that I never felt comfortable in to a side undercut, choppy short hair and a liking for suits and waistcoats.
Maybe it wasn't relevant.

Blimey - that sounds so bad in terms of stereotyping! Hetero women like me might also describe their style in similar terms (apart from the undercut which is a strange haircut IMO) whilst a couple I know are the most feminine lesbians you could ever meet!

Not a lesbian but I have a very similar sounding style to yours, OP, so I popped on over here to check out what you were being advised to wear. I look ridiculous in dresses and have very short choppy hair, so I'm making notes.

I look best in almost androgynous clothing, a very fitted shirt with wide leg trousers was a recent hit, jump suits are fine but I am very short of leg and can't wear heels and this reduces my choices. Are you very tall, OP, and leggy? Or like me, normal height but with short legs, because this makes jumpsuits impractical (or makes you look like a toddler, as I know to my cost).

Haha, I wish I was tall and leggy, sadly I'm 5ft 5 with average length legs. ( although a stylist once told me I have long legs in proportion to my body )

(I think undercuts are gorgeous - and would have one of my hair were long enough.)

I was making a comparison to how much my style has evolved now that I am free to wear what I like.

I’ll have to do this before I die!

I am not a lesbian nor will be a MOTB I hope for a few years but love some of the stuff suggested on this thread. Also love the monochrome theme.

To a friend's wedding, when I knew she was not wearing white herself (her dress was gold which really suited her red hair) I wore a white linen trouser suit with a black sleeveless blouse and a black fedora. It's one of the outfits I have had the most compliments on. I was only 25 then but would still wear something like that now nearly 25 years on.

This is more of a tuxedo suit but same sort of idea, I love it.

The blouse was something like this:

Do if you have the money. Silk lined, 2 pairs of trousers & a waistcoat. I can picture it now, A thing of beauty

Delphigirl · 03/10/2024 16:37

My mum (also lesbian mother of the bride!) wore exactly her own style to the weddings of me and sister - trousers, flowing top, funky necklace. But she elevated the materials. So for my winter wedding in a colossal abbey, very formal and English, she wore a beautiful purple silk velvet jacket with nehru collar over black silk trousers (from Liberty I seem to remember) and for my sisters wedding (abroad, hot, outside, more relaxed) so wore a lovely raw silk jacket and trousers in earthy tones. No hats or fascinators or that sort of nonsense. She looked fab and happy and comfortable at both.

be you - but elevated!

Investinmyself · 03/10/2024 16:41

I was at a conference recently and speaker (who referenced her female partner) looked fab in a dark velvet trouser suit and bright pink silk shirt with short grey hair. I think that type of look would be perfect, expensive fabrics well fitted. Perfect for a wedding in February.

GirlOfThe70s · 03/10/2024 16:43

The only thing with jumpsuits is the faff when going to the loo.

StormingNorman · 03/10/2024 16:46

Brunosmumsy · 03/10/2024 13:57

Yes that sounds quite like me

You’re going to look amazing by being authentically you.

I love the Hicks & Brown hats but have just come across these online…

Surely Janelle Monáe's vulva trousers ;)

I was in exactly this position in May, and I was also the officiant (but at least had my clerical clothes for that bit!). With my daughter and son-in-law's blessing I wore a mid-grey linen trouser suit (top was a short-sleeved shirt rather than a jacket, with a stand-up collar) with a lapel-less coat-dress over the top. The coat-dress was a very, very pale grey colour silk with large flowers in cerise and emerald green. I have similar hair to you, OP, and wore nothing on my head. My hair is purple. For shoes I wore emerald green Doc Marten's with cerise pink laces.

TimelyIntervention · 03/10/2024 18:07

Someone else suggested a statement coat. The particular embroidery of this one may not be your style, but I have been lusting after it!

That M and S teal suit is stunning.

Raininginmyheart · 03/10/2024 18:10

Yup I know exactly how you feel . I loathe Phase Eight , Hobbs style MOTB outfits I think they’re absolutely grim and I’m not keen on Fascinators either , the traditional ones are very boring and outdated .
I wore an extremely stylish navy jumpsuit as MOTB from Plumo …and received many compliments. Be true to yourself and your own style , please don’t have something foisted on you you don’t want to wear , you’ll feel uncomfortable and dissatisfied all day .
I don’t know what your budget is but you could have a look at Max Mara ?
I wanted to wear a chic trouser suit , like a take on YSL dinner jacket and trousers actually ( not in black however ) but I left things too late to properly investigate
