Lesbian mother of the bride outfit.

Hey all.
I came out 5 years ago and since then have been slowly finding a style that I feel is authentically me. Historically I was the boss's wife, wearing clothes that were expected of me, that I never felt comfortable in.
My dd is getting married next year, the grooms mum has already started posting huge hats, big dresses, in our wedding planning group. My dd has said you'll wear a fascinator though ( to me ) but eek. It's just not me.
My style is more Cate Blanchet, stylish suits, soft shirts, heels.
I have no idea where to look to find what I have in my mind.
Wedding is monochrome but guests can wear any colour.
I've never been a mother of the bride before. Help.

My mum (also lesbian mother of the bride!) wore exactly her own style to the weddings of me and sister - trousers, flowing top, funky necklace. But she elevated the materials. So for my winter wedding in a colossal abbey, very formal and English, she wore a beautiful purple silk velvet jacket with nehru collar over black silk trousers (from Liberty I seem to remember) and for my sisters wedding (abroad, hot, outside, more relaxed) so wore a lovely raw silk jacket and trousers in earthy tones. No hats or fascinators or that sort of nonsense. She looked fab and happy and comfortable at both.

be you - but elevated!

Edited

This is heartwarming.

Fascinators are not fascinating and look ridiculous.

Brunosmumsy · 03/10/2024 20:19

Gosh, so many awesome replies. Thank you so, so much to everyone. This has really, really helped.

Oh my. Teal velvet. How gorgeous. Wedding is in February so would work .

Reiss have a lovely teal velvet suit in at the moment , pair it with a. Cream silk cami and perhaps some sort of peacock feather hairclip

EveryOtherNameTaken · 03/10/2024 20:32

I want that teal suit. It's stunning 😍

Ghouella · 03/10/2024 20:38

My mum wore a suit to my wedding and she isn't even a lesbian haha. No fascinator either, she just doesn't like them. She looked great and not out of place at all. The suit was a sort of shimmery silver.

@Brunosmumsy my friend's grandmother went to a wedding. Asked if she wore a hat, her reply (in all innocence) was "No dear, I had one of those fornicators."

Garlicbest · 03/10/2024 20:48

I've been trying really hard not to buy this from La Redoute

They've also got this one, also cotton velvet.

You could go for a cloche, fedora, or a scarf tied round your head.

Love this 😂
A Malapropism.

Imagine the indulgence. Should I?

Also check out The Deck. I think you’d be about £2k or so depending on fabric. My first thought was the amazing Veronica Beard suit but someone beat me to it! I think you should wear something you’re comfortable in but also be mindful of the style of wedding. If it’s super formal/black tie then I don’t think some of the more casual/cropped suits would be “enough”.

YellowAsteroid · 03/10/2024 21:10

Fascinations are naff and vulgar. Wear a fedora if you must wear a hat, or just don’t wear a hat. Get a good hair cut and blow out before the event.

Newposter180 · 03/10/2024 21:14

Two suggestions to wear a scarf around her head?! Is this a thing other than for pirates??

Imagine the indulgence. Should I?

If you can afford it why not! You can get exactly what you want, maybe inspired by something on here but with a unique twist. No one else will ever have the same.
Enjoy the wedding. And please don’t wear a fascinator, they’re bloody hideous.

The jacket part of the M&S teal trouser suit is now sold out in every size.
40 sold in the last 48hours and 38 people looking at it right now, apparently.

The power of Mumsnet!

JapanesePond · 03/10/2024 22:46

Would this do? Lighter end of monochrome might be more befitting for a happy sunny mother of the bride, of course, with a serious Blanchet edge!

Purely on the basis that you are MOB, I would view this as a "because I love you" moment. So wear whatever she likes you in, suck it up and then look at the photos later and think "wow, I looked terrible in that!" Had to do it for my baby sister, I looked ten types of twat in the suit/hat combo she put me in! So obviously I dont have any photos of me in said outfit!

Its one of those moments in parenting. Like sitting next to the ex you would cheerfully stab in the face at their graduation (that may just be me!).

Elchupacabra · 04/10/2024 00:08

How about this? You could team it up with a bright shirt or blouse.

The relevance was trying to explain how I'd gone from very boss's wife dresses that I never felt comfortable in to a side undercut, choppy short hair and a liking for suits and waistcoats.
Maybe it wasn't relevant.

It was fine, you’re telling us about yourself and your style, which sounds fabulous.

faffadoodledo · 04/10/2024 06:55

No suggestions other than stick to your guns and style! Fascinators are anything but. One woman wore one to my son's wedding. Just one. That was my sister. And she looked uncomfortable wearing it. Everyone else was bare headed.
You'll look ace in a luxe trouser suit and a giant smile.

I hope your DD comes round to gentle persuasion. Obv not worth falling out over!

bouncydog · 04/10/2024 08:01

@Brunosmumsy you could also look at Shibumi who make fabulous silk jackets, trousers, coats etc. They offer a made to measure service and have loads of photos on their website of customers wearing their designs. Not everybody is 6’ and size 8 so much more realistic impression of what their designs are like!
