Hey all.
I came out 5 years ago and since then have been slowly finding a style that I feel is authentically me. Historically I was the boss's wife, wearing clothes that were expected of me, that I never felt comfortable in.
My dd is getting married next year, the grooms mum has already started posting huge hats, big dresses, in our wedding planning group. My dd has said you'll wear a fascinator though ( to me ) but eek. It's just not me.
My style is more Cate Blanchet, stylish suits, soft shirts, heels.
I have no idea where to look to find what I have in my mind.
Wedding is monochrome but guests can wear any colour.
I've never been a mother of the bride before. Help.

Yes. But. People on the thread don’t know what you were like before!

Anyway. How much do you want to spend? And do you care about designers / fashion, or not?

Edited

I don't care about designers and I'll spend what I have to. It's my first child's wedding 😍

Maybe a hat if you feel you have to wear something on your head ? Alternatively some kind of statement hair clip ?

I was also coming onto say what about a nice suit or jumpsuit with a fedora style hate. If the Duchess of Cambridge can wear a Fedora to church every Sunday, surely you can to a wedding!? Grin

Here's a wide brimmed version that's a bit less fedora-y https://uk.pinterest.com/pin/369295238196059573/ Pinterest]

Or a less elaborate version of a smaller hat like this

for entertainment value!! Grin

Not sure what your budget is, but when you said Cate Blanchett I immediately thought of Veronica Beard- for example this is great https://veronicabeard.com/en-gb/products/edia-pant-rose?pageSource=productListing

Tell your DD that nobody wear fascinators anymore!

I love this. It's a shame I cannot justify the cost for the running club annual social!

Gorgeous:
Massimo Alba velvet

Made to order:

The M and S teal suit is gorgeous. It would look amazing op.

So is the other one posted but so far out of my budget I refuse to look at it again.

Some absolutely stunning ideas on here, I think you’ll look amazing OP!

If you wanted to look at jumpsuits, I saw this one the other day and really liked it. A different shape to most of the ones I’ve seen recently. https://www.johnlewis.com/hotsquash-blouson-wide-leg-jumpsuit/woodland-teal/p5690541?size=16&s_ppc=2dx_mixed_fashion_BAU&tmad=c&tmcampid=2&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwgfm3BhBeEiwAFfxrG76PHynErIPzfCzVLNqa4o69yV60Vdk_9LH5Kbgr0ab8Q6Q3quYIMxoCtEcQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

As a side bar, I am not English. The first wedding I went to in England - very soon after I arrived (extended family) I wore a trouser suit. It was somethign I'd worn to weddings at home and it didn't even occur to me it might not be quite right. I was quite surprised to discover I was the only woman in trousers. I felt fine with my choice - but I do appreciate that it can be hard to choose something when you feel like you are going to stand out for being different.

CatherinetheAverage · 03/10/2024 14:42

What about a beautiful statement coat with plain wide trousers or jumpsuit underneath? If the trousers are black some kind of jewel clashing colour in pointed silk flat shoes would look great with it.

https://www.notonthehighstreet.com/nancymac/product/peacock-silk-velvet-vintage-style-coat (was looking for Nancy Mac as they do nice velvet pieces but it seems they recently went out of business ☹️)

I've never worn anything on my head to a wedding, and I think that's pretty standard these days. In being gently assertive with your daughter about the fascinator you're modelling how to resist outside pressure and be true to yourself which I think is an important thing, especially amidst wedding madness! Also, I found going to a few weddings last year - the first since covid when I passed 50 and let my grey hair grow through - was a big pointer to me that I needed to reassess my style and who I am now, so I totally get it. It's a chance to focus on you and express your identity and explore how you see yourself in a wider context, so definitely worth investing time on.

Apollo365 · 03/10/2024 13:51

It’s your post you can say what you like! ❤️

Exactly! And it's also relevant because it's a big deal to have gone from not feeling yourself, to finally being able to express your true self. And it makes it even more important to find something you love for this special day. I have no suggestions, but am stalking this thread to see any amazing Cate Blanchett outfits that I can copy 😁

VaddaABeetch · 03/10/2024 14:47

Thefold do wonderful trouser suits. If the wedding is not until February I’d buy from the sale in de ember so your budget goes further

Button28384738 · 03/10/2024 14:48

Wear what you're comfortable in. I think some "mother of the bride" outfits are OTT. I suggested some colours for my mum, that would fit with the wedding theme but wouldn't have specified what style she had to wear.

What about a wide legged jumpsuit? Very chic for a wedding?

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 03/10/2024 15:36

Not a lesbian but I have a very similar sounding style to yours, OP, so I popped on over here to check out what you were being advised to wear. I look ridiculous in dresses and have very short choppy hair, so I'm making notes.

I look best in almost androgynous clothing, a very fitted shirt with wide leg trousers was a recent hit, jump suits are fine but I am very short of leg and can't wear heels and this reduces my choices. Are you very tall, OP, and leggy? Or like me, normal height but with short legs, because this makes jumpsuits impractical (or makes you look like a toddler, as I know to my cost).
