New thread. Woke (blooming cat) to find it’s nearly full.

I thought there would @oddandelsewhere .. There’s a winter styling video coming up per the events page so I imagined that would have new things.
I’m a similar age as you, I’ve been putting leggings under dresses turned up so invisible, my problem is I seem to be permanently stuck in trainers, I have Mary Jane’s but not quite broken in yet. I add a jumper on top depending how cold it is. I don’t mind the bare bit between dress and trainers though. Although I have been wearing my heavier summer dresses, nothing very lightweight or sleeveless. I found the winter relatively mild last year and only resorted to boots on the west of days, but did fine myself in trousers quite often - the cord Gabis are very forgiving.

@oddandelsewhere I'm almost the same age as you and I wear thick socks and dresses. I roll them down to just above my ankle, and don’t care what anyone thinks.

oddandelsewhere · 27/08/2024 09:22

Thank you @Countmeout the leggings idea is genius! Also, emboldened by @Theteapotsbrokenspout I feel I should possibly try the socks.

I happened to see the Toast advert for the new men’s overalls in a lovely deep green—there doesn’t appear to be a women’s version. I’m wondering if anyone has purchased any of the men’s stock for themselves and how the sizing works? I do a lot of maintenance work and usually stick on some old blue overalls but I could seriously be persuaded to get these, they look so nice.

I'm 5'8 size 12/14 and find the mens shirts work in a S. I suspect the trousers are very baggy on legs, though

OftenOrange · 27/08/2024 11:41

@oddandelsewhere Agree socks and trainers suit any age , as do brogues, loafers and chunky Mary Janes. I’ve taken to the look and am older than you . I wasn’t ever a fan of trainers until I got the Flower Mountains which I find quite stylish as well and they look cool with socks.

I love my 2 Toast denim pinafores but don’t wear them as much as I’d like as I hate when skirts cling to tights. I wore them a bit last year with Mary Jane’s with a block heel and thinnish black ankle socks., but the shoes which I do love have never broken in enough to wear for a day walking around London .
I don’t know why but leather shoes are usually uncomfortable for me now compared to boots , is it a path of life thing?

@oddandelsewhere - I'm a big fan of the M&S Heatgen thermal leggings under a Toast dress (don't get the extra thick ones - just the 2 pack). I'm happy with thick socks though too.

summergreens · 30/08/2024 11:42

Can anyone advise how the seaweed green needlecord wrap dress is likely to wash and wear? Tried it on in store and loved the colour and fit but it seemed a bit handled already. If Im spending nearly £200 I want to feel confident it will still look good.

ScottishMouse · 30/08/2024 17:51

Have just had a clear out of some much loved Toast and non-Toast clothes that have not fitted for a long while, and at this point are unlikely to. Among them I found a lovely charcoal grey merino sweater with a wide cropped body and long narrow sleeves from maybe 8 years ago. I loved that so much, and wore it until it fell apart (and the moths got it). I see the same one is on eBay but the price being asked is too high for me, plus I am always wary of second hand knits as they have often been washed and I hate to wash my wool knits.
No real point to this other than a bit of Toast nostalgia.
My wardrobe is now extremely streamlined. So much so that I am looking forward to the autumn drop next week (my absolute favourite season) in the hope that some classic knits like that old charcoal one might pop up.

ScottishMouse · 30/08/2024 17:55

In my possible clear out pile are two of the lovely shirts/shackets (shudder…that word!) from last year or the year before that came in the blue and the caramel type colour cotton linen fabric with the fine stripe, and also in the plain slate cotton linen, and I think a yellow too. The one that then appeared in a cord version in green & off-white and is online now in denim.
I have been keeping an eye out on resale sites for a bigger size in these as I adore them (I have the slate and the caramel fine stripe) and really don’t want to let them go even though they are a bit tight.
If anyone happens to see any in size 10, let me know! Thanks!

Stoic123 · 30/08/2024 21:43

@ScottishMouse. Hope you find them. I bought the blue fine stripe and slate ones as they were gorgeous but ended up selling them as they didn't suit my body shape (big hips). Lovely on the right person.

Snowyowl78 · 04/09/2024 08:19

has anyone noticed Gabis have gone up nearly 10% to £125! I bought them in April for £115. Seems unreasonable.

IlovePond · 04/09/2024 08:47

That is a bit steep @Snowyowl78 !

Talking of trousers, I had a good, critical look at my linen ones from last year’s sale yesterday and was appalled by their condition. I have hardly worn them, and washed them carefully, but they’ve gone huge and shapeless and the material is really worn and thin. They are no longer fit to be worn in public 😿

I am really disappointed- they were so lovely when I got them (and even DH said how nice they were).

I have just donated a load of ancient and well loved M&S and RI linen trousers that were in excellent condition (but I couldn’t fit into them), so it’s the quality of the linen Toast has used, not linen itself that’s at fault.

Has anyone else found this? I was keen to buy more Toast linen trousers in a similar style, (most Toast trousers don’t suit me), but this has put me off!

faustina · 04/09/2024 11:31

@IlovePond I think the cotton/linen fabric is a bit more robust. That was one of the reasons why I returned the linen pairs I tried. Could you find a similar style in cotton/linen? Have you tried Alixes?

ScottishMouse · 04/09/2024 11:31

Gabis were under £100 not all that long ago @Snowyowl78.

ScottishMouse · 04/09/2024 11:32

@IlovePond i bought two pairs of the barrel leg linen trousers this summer. I don’t usually love linen trousers, so assumed it was linen generally rather than Toast’s linen, but I don’t think they are wearing all that well.

IlovePond · 04/09/2024 12:08

Thanks @faustina - I might try a pair next sale.

I tried the barrel leg trousers @ScottishMouse and thought they were the same material as my trousers, so maybe there’s same quality issues. It’s definitely not all linen that wears badly as my 100% linen M&S and River Island trousers appeared to be indestructible. (I just wish I could have still fitted into them 😿)

faustina · 04/09/2024 12:10

I wonder if they made them with a thin linen to make them sort of floaty? (if you see what I mean)

IlovePond · 04/09/2024 12:12

That may be the case @faustina but I also suspect it’s just cheap material/cost cutting. I am very disappointed.

faustina · 04/09/2024 12:13

That's a shame. Don't give up on Toast trousers just yet though - try the cotton/linen mix first!

IlovePond · 04/09/2024 15:02

Will do @faustina - thanks!

Countmeout · 04/09/2024 16:56

I think my first Gabis were £85. I think £125 is steep because the cotton ones don’t keep their appearance that well.

A few new bits have been added. I’ll have to have a proper look later.

OP posts:
Snowyowl78 · 04/09/2024 17:02

I’ve just found my first pair of Gabis email- June 2020 for £95!

Countmeout · 04/09/2024 19:56

Well they have 2 new colours in the Gabi cords which I did hope for - maybe just not for £125.

I have fallen for the roll neck cashmere (mix) jumper in green. And I am weirdly attracted by the long shirt thing that ties at the front.

They have last years green coat in orange. I do not need a coat.

And I have ordered 3 woolly bandanas to pick one from 😑.
I could have done with a woolly bandana today. Turned quite cold at one point.

Anyone else looking at winter things?

OP posts:
ScottishMouse · 04/09/2024 20:48

Oh I am liking A LOT from the new drop. The bandana is fab @Countmeout. I have two similar to this (but plain stitch) from Jo Gordon and wear them constantly for about 6 months of the year.
Also love the boiled wool coat, the cotton linen twill pinafore dress and shirt, and the short quilted cotton gown (less a gown, more a jacket). I spotted the reversible cotton wool coat on the photo for the upcoming live, and hoped it might be waxed cotton. I’m not sure I would want to wear a coat with a wool lining, sounds a bit itchy. Which is just as well as it is way above budget.
