Really niche trends only you seem to remember

I'm not taking big fashions that everyone associates with an era, just those flash in the pan things that stick in your mind for some reason.

Like the early 90s there was 'ankle length denim skirts with square toed ankle boots' - I remember this as I wore that combo to my first gig without adults (Stereo MCs, 1993)

Then about a year later, GCSE year, came 'baggy cropped jumper over long white shirt', definitely wore that.

Early 00s came 'combats tucked into really pointy high heeled ankle boots', which I didn't wear but I did buy some metallic pointy boots on a whim, which I still own and occasionally wear for goth or steampunk events.

Which micro trends stick in your mind?

I loved the reversible quilted sweatshirts. I had one with a large print of Mickey Mouse on the front and when you wore it inside out it was covered in little versions of Mickey Mouse.

I can't remember if it was quilted or just padded. But everyone had one. I'm 49 and this was when I was about 10.

Anyone remember them?

Oh gosh. I remember the reversible sweatshirts, I had one lol.

Along with my bleached jeans.

Twistybranch · 30/07/2024 08:33

90s

Chenille crop sleeveless jumpers over a white shirt that had the big cuffs

pop socks over the knee with skirt

There was a bizarre late 90s trend of coffee/brown/cream trio combos

00s

pointy stilettos with combats

long necklace with vest top and crop cardigan combo

parrotonmyshoulder · 30/07/2024 08:56

Yes the reversible sweatshirts! I was so jealous of my friend’s collection of pastel pink, lemon and mint ones. I wasn’t allowed one.

Echobelly · 30/07/2024 09:10

@sickofsickness1 - I had a black and white Mexx jumper like that when I was 8 or 9 that I was very proud of. Polka dots on one side and logo on the other

Does anyone remember the really shiny black plastic looking jackets ?! Had one in the 90's and loved it think it was from mark 1.

I remember wearing cut off denim shorts over black tights with dm's and a flying jacket but they was probably just strange old me!!

Yes! Not quilted but otherwise the same but a different Disney character.

I had this exact thing, but it was Goofy. I would have been about 8 I think. It wasn't quilted. I remember wearing it out to a playground and some older kid yelling that it looked like pyjamas. I felt so embarrassed.

In the Summer of 1996 or 1997 there was a micro trend for wearing bindi stickers on your forehead, and henna tattoos.

I'm having a link fail but there is one on Etsy for £72.98!

Caraxes · 30/07/2024 09:36

Late 90s, mid teens, I remember raising eyebrows by turning up at a family gathering wearing a closely fitted white shirt and a black tie... I didn't make it up, I bought the combo in a shop, probably Topshop or similar, and saw others wearing them.

Echobelly · 30/07/2024 11:16

I also remember in the late 80s REALLY wanting a pair of LA Gear hi top trainers with funky patterned panels on them or twisty bits that everyone wanted. Never got them though. 😔

This is a lovely combination of sweet memories but also making me feel ancient as I remember a lot of these.

henlake7 · 30/07/2024 12:10

I dont know about micro trends but I do remember thinking I was the mutts nutts in leg warmers with neon footless tights (with a strap that hooked under your foot and dragged your crotch to your knees).
Also rara skirt and Frankie Says Relax t-shirt!

I'm pretty sure my sister had that exact sweatshirt, it was from M&S!

Tatare · 30/07/2024 12:23

It was padded, not quilted, and was mint green.

Tatare · 30/07/2024 12:24

Anyhoo, my contribution would be tiny little back-packs, probably 1991? Just big enough for 40 Marlborough, a lighter and a £20 note.

Stickthatupyourdojo · 30/07/2024 12:27

Inflatable bags (to go with the sofa) and feathered neon hair scrunchies.

Tatare · 30/07/2024 12:27

Cut-off Levis, black wolford tights and DMs was definitely not just you @lollipoprainbow, my best friend & I wore that outfit for about a year, in 1988, with a tight black polo-neck t-shirt.

Oh my gosh, I had a very risque Relax t-shirt that I customised and cropped a bit too high, what with the cut out armholes, there wasn't much that wasn't on display! But I actually had proper abs at that point and was very keen to show them off. Worn with a micromini pale blue denim skirt and pale blue court shoes.

NonPlayerCharacter · 30/07/2024 12:30

There was a brief period in the mid 90s when it was leggings, loose long sleeved white shirt and a cropped sleeveless top over that in the same colour as the leggings, with the 90s lace up knee high boots.

A really brief trend a while later for mini skirts or hotpants with socks that went halfway up the thigh. It was so stupid it didn't take long at all for everyone to see how ridiculous it looked.

Combat trousers with crop tops, but the truly cool and individual conformists would make the trip to the army surplus shop so we wore real army trousers and real army shirts over our crop tops. I sometimes wonder what actual soldiers made of it.

GumdropsAndLollipops · 30/07/2024 12:32

Mesh, beaded and sequinned backless slippers that came in different colours.

I had completely forgotten that! I loved that sweater. Also Mickey Mouse.

I had that exact same one! i'm 50.

lollipoprainbow · 30/07/2024 12:42

Puff ball dress anyone ?! I have a great 80's pic of me in a light pink puffball dress and my older sister beside me in a snoopy sweatshirt.

lollipoprainbow · 30/07/2024 12:43

Also the banana hairclips!
