Really niche trends only you seem to remember

I'm not taking big fashions that everyone associates with an era, just those flash in the pan things that stick in your mind for some reason.

Like the early 90s there was 'ankle length denim skirts with square toed ankle boots' - I remember this as I wore that combo to my first gig without adults (Stereo MCs, 1993)

Then about a year later, GCSE year, came 'baggy cropped jumper over long white shirt', definitely wore that.

Early 00s came 'combats tucked into really pointy high heeled ankle boots', which I didn't wear but I did buy some metallic pointy boots on a whim, which I still own and occasionally wear for goth or steampunk events.

Which micro trends stick in your mind?

Anyone remember nevica jackets and all the bright colours? Work with ski pant

JimNast · 30/07/2024 14:14

I had some of those.
Not at the same time, but I also had pixie boots.

JaneIves · 30/07/2024 14:15

Also, love beads, upper arm
Bangles and belly chains.

@Twistybranch exactly the colours we had! I think they were mo k snake print embossed too!

The chunky shoes mentioned upthread, they were called Palladiums.

If you watch the full Monty- at the end with the women in the working men’s club- it’s a sea of satin in green and orange 😂

They were cheap imitation of Palladiums.

Around the time of the reversible sweatshirts, our school also had the jeans with cartoon character transfers (eg the flintstones) on the thigh 😁

much later.. 1994-ish - my first proper boyfriend and all the cool lads had tartan trousers and a white satin shirt for going out in 😂😂

Genevieva · 30/07/2024 14:24

1980s:
Norfolk Jumpers
1990s:
gemstones encased in silver wire to make pendants on leather thongs.
’Bodies’ - leotards with poppers so they go over the head - worn with jeans.

Late 80s? I think my parent still gave mine in a wardrobe somewhere! (Not Nevica , but another brand).

Izzynohopanda · 30/07/2024 14:28

Neon /fluorescent socks. Must have been really sweaty in hot weather.

FlappyFish · 30/07/2024 14:34

@OriginalUsername2 I would pay very good money for one of those tops now from Miss Selfridge. I don’t just remember, I covet. 😂

I loved the reversible quilted sweatshirts. I had one with a large print of Mickey Mouse on the front and when you wore it inside out it was covered in little versions of Mickey Mouse.

I can't remember if it was quilted or just padded. But everyone had one. I'm 49 and this was when I was about 10.

Anyone remember them?

Yep! Mine was a Dalmatian and on the reverse was 101 small Dalmatians in different Disney poses. Bloody loved that jumper. Would have been the same year as you.

Does anyone remember the really shiny black plastic looking jackets ?! Had one in the 90's and loved it think it was from mark 1.

I remember wearing cut off denim shorts over black tights with dm's and a flying jacket but they was probably just strange old me!!

The tights and cut offs and a bomber was 100% a thing at my school in the mid 90's. Even better if the tights had a skeleton on them!

EVERYONE in my primary school (mid/late 80s) had those extra long T-shirts like a nightie, that had the hem and arms all cut in to long fringes. I think they were supposed to be beachwear as many had been brought back from foreign holidays. They were huge!

I think I had one from Greece or Corfu. The fringey bits at the shoulders had beads at the end of them. Yes, it was totally a thing!

I rem the go to souvenir from holiday was a Mickey Mouse thingy for the antenna for your car! That or the pen

harriettenightingale · 30/07/2024 14:40

You could buy them, but my mum made me one. I still quite like them!

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 30/07/2024 14:40

A really brief trend a while later for mini skirts or hotpants with socks that went halfway up the thigh. It was so stupid it didn't take long at all for everyone to see how ridiculous it looked

Often worn with tartan frilly garters. People wearing this were referred to as ‘Smiths Fans’ in Manchester.

I remember like this clip things on elastic ( like you get on braces) which could be worn to pull things in at the back or to hold sleeves up. Or just randomly worn anywhere.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 30/07/2024 14:41

Jane Norman bodycon dresses.early to mid 00s.Loved them

PrincessHoneysuckle · 30/07/2024 14:42

PerkyMintDeer · 30/07/2024 13:52

Oh and “shrugs”

Sequin or crochet shrugs (little short sleeved boleros) with aforementioned cropped trousers or jeans. The ultimate 2005 going out out outfit.

Ooh I loved a shrug and a cropped cardi

Waterboatlass · 30/07/2024 14:44

Mid 90s lime green and orange outfits. I remember shop displays full of that combo

Weird one, beauty treatment rather than a fashion trend that was and still kind of fascinates me but have no idea what to Google! Nothing obvious has come up.

It was a sort of pearlescent tooth treatment in the early 90s. I remember several school friends mums and a teacher having really shiny pearly teeth. One had someone at the house doing them with some kind of electric pen that bleeped. I don't just mean just bright white like nowadays, , it was a pearl finish. Would love to know what it was!

howlsmovingbouncycastle · 30/07/2024 14:46

I have no idea whether this was a weird local micro-trend at my primary school or not, but I distinctly remember us all wearing two pairs of ankle socks so that the top of the underneath pair could be folded down to make a contrasting band round the top of the pair on top - would have been late 80s.

Waterboatlass · 30/07/2024 14:46

Oh and early 00s indie trend, tights cut up for no reason! Footless, ok, but quite often , just a chunk cut out to wear around the knee.

Hummingbirdie · 30/07/2024 14:47

High heeled wedge trainers. Around 2012 time.

TheFormidableMrsC · 30/07/2024 14:47

River Island very low slung baggy combats with a little floral cami and giant timberland boots.

Bleached cropped jeans, would probably be described as "mom" jeans now.

Pedal pushes with frilly big shirts (Duran Duran era for me!).

Giant black pea coat things. Worn with my cropped jeans, flat ballet shoes and sticky up hair. I wore that coat even if it was 30 degrees outside 🤣

TheFormidableMrsC · 30/07/2024 14:49

lollipoprainbow · 30/07/2024 12:42

Puff ball dress anyone ?! I have a great 80's pic of me in a light pink puffball dress and my older sister beside me in a snoopy sweatshirt.

Oh good Lord, yes! I had a puffball skirt that I wore with white stilletoes
