Really niche trends only you seem to remember

I'm not taking big fashions that everyone associates with an era, just those flash in the pan things that stick in your mind for some reason.

Like the early 90s there was 'ankle length denim skirts with square toed ankle boots' - I remember this as I wore that combo to my first gig without adults (Stereo MCs, 1993)

Then about a year later, GCSE year, came 'baggy cropped jumper over long white shirt', definitely wore that.

Early 00s came 'combats tucked into really pointy high heeled ankle boots', which I didn't wear but I did buy some metallic pointy boots on a whim, which I still own and occasionally wear for goth or steampunk events.

Which micro trends stick in your mind?

Omg yes!! I loved mine! I'm 46, I was probably about 6/7!

AntigoneFunn · 30/07/2024 15:54

In about 1983 there was a brief, Bananarama- led trend for pinafore dresses and pixie boots. I badgered my mum until she bought me one. It was tartan.
In around 1985 there was a short lived rockabilly revival and we all went mad for turned up Levi's 501s, cardigans and skirts with tons of petticoats under them. We looked like a slightly more grimy Sandy from Grease.

I did the skirt over flared jeans teamed with a bindi.

Mid 90s I was desperate for a shiny slippery satin shirt in lime green or neon orange.

Wearing little plastic dummies as a necklace in the early 90s.

Wearing loads of 'shag bands' up my arm in the early 00s.

Wearing a strapping flowery dress from Tammy Girl over a white t-shirt in the early 90s.

More recently:
Jeggings and ballet pumps. Late 00s.
1950s style dresses. Early 2010s.

Oh my god you remember the baby dummy thing?! People at my school actually used to put them in their mouth too. I wasn't ever allowed one. But when I mention this fashion when reminiscing people never remember it!!

I have zero clue where did it even came from? Do you remember?

GigiAnnna · 30/07/2024 16:03

Clogs and pedal pushers in the late 90s. Gypsy skirts that had had tiered layers around 2005.

Craftycorvid · 30/07/2024 16:18

I loved the tea dress and Doc Martens look from the early 90s. I generally stopped paying attention to fashion around then, but do recall a few lovely dresses from TopShop when it was still good.

I loved the reversible quilted sweatshirts. I had one with a large print of Mickey Mouse on the front and when you wore it inside out it was covered in little versions of Mickey Mouse.

I can't remember if it was quilted or just padded. But everyone had one. I'm 49 and this was when I was about 10.

Anyone remember them?

Yes! Mine was Daffy Duck.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 30/07/2024 16:27

Shiny black cycling shorts with a neon colour block stripe down each leg. Paired with a fringed tshirt from a seaside resort either from Uk or Spain!

satin trousers and fitted shirts in the most garish of lime green and orange.

Fluffy cropped tops with A line denim skirts with buttons down the front.

silver cropped puffa jackets with teeny tiny little clear plastic backpacks.

FCUK T-shirts.

I seem to recall a phase of wearing tea dresses that buttoned up the front in the early/mid 90s but I don't remember if that was just me or of it was a thing.

That was a thing. I wore them. With DMs of course, and they are totally selling them again in Urban Outfitters.

There was also retro velvet blazers, but only 2nd hand. Maybe it was just a North London indie kid thing but we all had them. These days Shein would be making cheap knockoffs straight away!

I was a bit old for the DMs at the time, I think I wore them with Victorian style lace up ankle boots with a Louis heel. Maybe that was just me! I don't really remember. My children were very young at the time and my brains must have been fried from lack of sleep.

No, not just London, there were an abundance of them in charity shops and my friend and I got hauled in front of the head of sodding sixth form on our last day for the heinous crime of wearing them "like a coat without a school jumper underneath". In July!

Is it just me or do teenagers these days just seem to dress a little bit more safe then we did? Nothing really seems to scream 'fashion disaster'.

It should be a rite of passage to look back in 10yrs and think 'I cant believe I went out in public like that!'. It would be a shame if they missed out!!LOL😄

What - not even the flesh colour leggings worn with matching crop top ? Or the all-in-ones which I think are actually worse.

BeyondTheMusic · 30/07/2024 16:51

In the early 80s there was a makeup brand called Stagelight. We wore the color Blue Roses, which was a very blue fuscia, on lip and cheek.

CheerfulBunny · 30/07/2024 16:53

'Gauchos' so basically culottes. Fashionable for about five minutes thanks to the Pussycat Dolls, never seen again. I had some very peculiar snow washed jeans when I was about 14-15 that had white outline patterns drawn on top with some sort of paint. I had roses but there were all sorts of designs available. Very trendy in the Midlands for one summer, now sadly forgotten.

Jane Norman bodycon dresses.early to mid 00s.Loved them

And the Jane Norman store bags !

CheerfulBunny · 30/07/2024 16:58

@forgivingfiggy Stacey wears this exact outfit in the first episode of Gavin and Stacey for their first date

Giggorata · 30/07/2024 16:59

Way back in the 60s, just before hippy style came in: white lacy tights, reefer jackets worn as a full length (mini) coat, huge medallions on long chains, really heavy black mascara and eyeliner, teeny little handbags on long chains.

ThisMerryLurker · 30/07/2024 17:11

I also had my jelly shoes with matching jelly bag.

Or I would wear odd illuminous socks

DerekFaker · 30/07/2024 17:12

Skinny scarfs
Handkerchief tops
Massive dangly sleeves on tops

Oh and German army shirts. All the indie/grunge kids had one.

Izzynohopanda · 30/07/2024 17:18

Not a niche fashion but an honourable mention is ‘barely black’ and 10 dernier tights. We would never wear anything with a 20+ denier - they’d be Nora Batty tights .

MrsMoastyToasty · 30/07/2024 17:24

Late 70s/early 80s. Gypsy skirts with lots of broderie anglaise edging and worn with a broderie anglaise underskirt (which had to show) and an off the shoulder top.
Early 80s. Disco belts. Belts in bright colours that were made of ribbed webbing and had a fastening like the seat belt on a plane seat. You had to wear it with the end loose hanging down rather than tucked through the loops on your jeans.
Early 80s. Piecrust collars , jumpers with rows of sheep on the front, and bow ties. All courtesy of Princess Diana.

In the 80s your brother/boyfriend would wear .
White socks with loafers.
Stonewashed jeans.
An acrylic jumper tucked into their jeans.
A lacoste polo shirt.
For smart occasions he would wear a pastel colour jacket with the sleeves turned up to the elbows.

NonPlayerCharacter · 30/07/2024 17:28

I always thought I wasn't very fashionable but when I watch original episodes of Frasier, I see I dressed just like Daphne.

Didn't look anything like her, though...

AddictedToBooks · 30/07/2024 17:34

Hooded "Acid" tops - really psychedelic tops with plain black sleeves and hoods. My poor Nanna almost fainted when I begged her for an Acid top (obvs, she knew what "acid" was and I had no clue).
Spaghetti strap dresses that were ribbed and you wore a t.shirt underneath.
Lacy crop t.shirts that you'd wear a bra under with pinstripe trousers.
Long satin floral skirts.
Baseball jackets and stupidly baggy jeans and those Joe Bloggs jeans in bright colours and with a different coloured bum.
Trainers like LA Gear etc that had the tongues hanging out because you only partly fastened them.
Hair mascara that smelled sickly sweet and stuck to your face and you could get it in pink, blue and purple.
Dewberry perfume.

I also remember the reversible tops.

This thread is brilliant - makes me really happy (and embarrassed at what I used to wear, but all my friends were too and we were happy)

I think it was from the 90s rave scene - did they all use dummies to stop them gurning from the drugs or something?

It definitely co-incided with peace signs, t-shirts with the 7-up man (Mr Spliffy??), smilies on everything and those huge jeans with contrasting red/black patches.

JaxiiTaxii · 30/07/2024 17:38

Has anyone mentioned Mr Man crop t-shirts?

I had Mr Messy.
