Really niche trends only you seem to remember

I'm not taking big fashions that everyone associates with an era, just those flash in the pan things that stick in your mind for some reason.

Like the early 90s there was 'ankle length denim skirts with square toed ankle boots' - I remember this as I wore that combo to my first gig without adults (Stereo MCs, 1993)

Then about a year later, GCSE year, came 'baggy cropped jumper over long white shirt', definitely wore that.

Early 00s came 'combats tucked into really pointy high heeled ankle boots', which I didn't wear but I did buy some metallic pointy boots on a whim, which I still own and occasionally wear for goth or steampunk events.

Which micro trends stick in your mind?

Tee shirts that changed colour with heat, so different shade under arms. 7 yr olds loved them!

Does anyone remember the Miss Selfridge T-shirts that were a tie-dye heart? It was also the logo of the shop at the time. Everyone I knew had them in different colors.

Yes! My friend had one, which she used to wear with combats and a mini backpack.

I remember skirts being worn over trousers as a brief fashion. Also tops which had a ruched area on the boobs. I still see them in charity shops occasionally.

Rosemarypots · 30/07/2024 13:57

Somebody up thread mentioned dragons - I loved that look, circa late 90s / early 00s. I wore a red top with dragons paired with silky black combats. I remember Chinese-style dresses being in, as well.

forgivingfiggy · 30/07/2024 13:58

2005 - bootcut dark indigo jeans (New Look Hula) big leather belt with huge diamanté buckle, vest top with cropped cardigan. It all served to showcase a muffin top wonderfully.

MUCHtodoAboutSomething · 30/07/2024 13:59

Those jeweled chunky chain belts everyone wore on their hips.

Global Hypercolor was the brand.

Trousers with a skirt attached 😂 I thought I looked so cool 😎

EVERYONE in my primary school (mid/late 80s) had those extra long T-shirts like a nightie, that had the hem and arms all cut in to long fringes. I think they were supposed to be beachwear as many had been brought back from foreign holidays. They were huge!

And yes I also remember jelly shoes and the flimsy bags as well as reversible sweatshirts. I think they were all Disney iirc, mine was ‘101 Dalmatians’

belindaah · 30/07/2024 14:03

Wallabees - chunky suede lace up shoes. I had them in purple. And it was very important to keep the made of real leather tags.

I loved the reversible quilted sweatshirts. I had one with a large print of Mickey Mouse on the front and when you wore it inside out it was covered in little versions of Mickey Mouse.

I can't remember if it was quilted or just padded. But everyone had one. I'm 49 and this was when I was about 10.

Anyone remember them?

Yes, I'm the same age as you and I had one around the same time. In fact, I had three - a 'quality' Snoopy one from a proper shop that I got for my birthday, and two crappy unlicensed knock-off Disney ones from the kids' clothes stall at our local market! One was Minnie Mouse and one was 101 Dalmatians.

I believe I teamed it with my stirrup ski-pants, or my Mel & Kim style cropped tapered jeans which had a little zip at the ankle.

Dresses over jeans
Peddle pushers
Black sandal shoes with a stretchy strap
Backless tops
Nipples on show
Bjork multi buns
Mini butterfly hair clips

Furry mismatched neon socks? Did I dream that?

I wore them in the mid-1980s.

I remember most of these so far.

Cattery · 30/07/2024 14:07

Long tweed winter coat with pixie boots circa 1984

There was a brief period in the mid 90s when it was leggings, loose long sleeved white shirt and a cropped sleeveless top over that in the same colour as the leggings, with the 90s lace up knee high boots.

A really brief trend a while later for mini skirts or hotpants with socks that went halfway up the thigh. It was so stupid it didn't take long at all for everyone to see how ridiculous it looked.

Combat trousers with crop tops, but the truly cool and individual conformists would make the trip to the army surplus shop so we wore real army trousers and real army shirts over our crop tops. I sometimes wonder what actual soldiers made of it.

Yes to the black, over the knee socks, I wore them with babydoll style dresses, in the cooler months I'd put a white t shirt underneath.

Also recall neon satin shirts were a thing, mid nineties I think, my friend and I would prearrange which colour we were wearing so we were not the same.

Loads of sheer stuff too, to show off our wonderbras underneath!

SinisterBumFacedCat · 30/07/2024 14:09

The “Indian Summer” in about 2002 or 3. I was wearing corsets made out of sari fabric with cropped flared pants with mirror discs and embroidery on and a triangular shawl round one hip, Indian bangles and a bindi on my head.

Yes, I remember being mad for this, I made my own matching jewellery, lot’s of pink and orange and gold beads with mirrors incorporating. The early to mid 00’s was a great time for beaded jewellery, I loved creating my own stuff from the many bead shops, getting inspiration from Accesorize and Michal Negrin. The clothes of that era were also spectacularly beautiful, sequinned and beaded camisole tops and glittery jeans!

I had a reversible 101 Dalmatians sweater for Christmas in 1986. I also remember around the same time during summer all the girls wearing these polka dot 2 piece outfits, like a loose vest with matching cropped leggings. The colours were blue, pink or yellow with black dots, or white with yellow, blue or pink dots. I never saw any other colour variation. I had a blue with black dots version (I really wanted a white with yellow dots but the market stall had run out). My family called it a zot costume! I remember pretty much every young girl wearing them one year but no one else remembers them!

I loved those hula jeans! Wish I still had them!

Hobble skirts late 80,s, black fabric dolly shoes from the local Chinese store mid 80's stick with me!

Yes and the satin colours of the time were bright neon green and bright orange.

Is it just me or do teenagers these days just seem to dress a little bit more safe then we did? Nothing really seems to scream 'fashion disaster'.

It should be a rite of passage to look back in 10yrs and think 'I cant believe I went out in public like that!'. It would be a shame if they missed out!!LOL😄

Try living where I am.
Crop top, 'nude' or light greige tight leggings, white sports ankle socks, crocs or furry sliders.
The 'models' are generally carrying a few spare kg.

KreedKafer · 30/07/2024 14:12

Also can we please light a memorial candle for the green Benetton drawstring duffel bags with the rope strap and the massive logo? Very popular among the cool kids as school bags, despite being useless for the purpose as they were really uncomfortable to carry and the rope handle cut a painful groove into your shoulder the moment you popped anything as heavy as, eg, your Tricolore or Mastermaths textbook into it.

Also popular in the same year at my school was a weird sort of plastic box style of school bag - rigid shiny plastic available in a million different bright colours, with a snap fastening and a detachable contrasting shoulder strap. Size and shape of a small briefcase. Favoured by 1st and 2nd years, ditched in favour of a pastel-toned Head sports holdall in 3rd year.

JaneIves · 30/07/2024 14:13

@Twistybranch exactly the colours we had! I think they were mo k snake print embossed too!

The chunky shoes mentioned upthread, they were called Palladiums.

Oh I used to love this look, when I was young and slim enough to get away with it. However the socks were never tight enough and always rolled down my legs.

mac111 · 30/07/2024 14:14

The 'Johnson's Baby Powder' style mini t that Mark Owen once wore - my friends and I were all wearing knock off versions of that!
