Really niche trends only you seem to remember

I'm not taking big fashions that everyone associates with an era, just those flash in the pan things that stick in your mind for some reason.

Like the early 90s there was 'ankle length denim skirts with square toed ankle boots' - I remember this as I wore that combo to my first gig without adults (Stereo MCs, 1993)

Then about a year later, GCSE year, came 'baggy cropped jumper over long white shirt', definitely wore that.

Early 00s came 'combats tucked into really pointy high heeled ankle boots', which I didn't wear but I did buy some metallic pointy boots on a whim, which I still own and occasionally wear for goth or steampunk events.

Which micro trends stick in your mind?

I seem to recall a phase of wearing tea dresses that buttoned up the front in the early/mid 90s but I don't remember if that was just me or of it was a thing.

I remember my grey trousers that had a skirt over the top. They were like school trousers but I loved wearing them in 2000. Plus, the stretchy plastic choker around the same time. Oh and the tiny butterfly clips I used to wear in my hair 😁
How about the neon t-shirts that used to change colour in the heat in the 80s? They may have been Fat Willie's ones, I never had one but wanted one!

I came here to say the skirt over trousers trend. Late 90s I reckon

PruneInTheNest · 30/07/2024 14:55

Skirt trousers (one item- a skirt over flared trousers)

slip on shoes (could only really buy them from the local market stall in my area) Like these ones

colourful fake Burberry check scarves (in baby pink or baby blue) again from the local market 😂

Crochet ponchos

Mid 80s, neon tights with clashing neon socks

Late 80s mismatched dangly earrings- very handy if you invariably lost one of a pair

These are all relatively recent fashions! 😉Anyone remember wet look bags and boots etc from the 60s? I had a wet look pencil case which was the envy of all - my nan made it for me from an offcut from a bag she made (she was a machinist). She gave me two, and I gave the smaller one to my friend - we thought we were the cat pyjamas.

fiddleleaffig · 30/07/2024 15:05

I also remember wearing sarongs over jeans a lot in the spring/early summer.

I do miss the sparkly stilettos of the early 00s though. Used to covert Faith shoes. They just aren't the same anymore

I loved the reversible quilted sweatshirts. I had one with a large print of Mickey Mouse on the front and when you wore it inside out it was covered in little versions of Mickey Mouse.

I can't remember if it was quilted or just padded. But everyone had one. I'm 49 and this was when I was about 10.

Anyone remember them?

Yes! I always wanted one and kept showing my mum the ones in Dunnes stores, but for some reason she was not in favour Sad

CutthroatDruTheViolent · 30/07/2024 15:11

It might have been entirely localised to the schools that were near the Harlequin Centre in Watford, but when I was a young teen, maybe 1995-1997, Giorgio sweatshirts from Sports Direct (or whatever it was called back then) were all the rage. Everyone at school had one, I remember begging my mum to buy me one.

In hindsight I think we probably all thought we were getting a Georgio Armani sweatshirt for a tenner Grin

This was definitely a thing. I got boobs at 11 and was constantly annoyed that I couldn't wear these unless I got a massive size - I had one from Tammy Girl but it never fit me and I had to wear it with a top underneath.

Yes it was a thing, often wore them with canvas desert boots!

SinisterBumFacedCat · 30/07/2024 15:17

Mid nineties Brit pop era, t-shirts with bastardised product logos. I had one from Camden market that looked like the Silk Cut cigarette logo but it said Sick Slut instead. I’m not nostalgic enough to goggle this though.

Edited

I would love to have seen 60s fashion in real time! My mum used to make all her own clothes and talks about a shift dress with oversized sequins around the neck I wish she'd kept!

Twistybranch · 30/07/2024 15:22

I don’t rem the 60s but I rem there was a micro revival in the 90s…with white patent shoes etc and the hair…mid length with the ends flicked out

NonPlayerCharacter · 30/07/2024 15:23

60s was the miniskirt era...bloody glad my tree trunks and I weren't there!

Nitgel · 30/07/2024 15:25

Beaded moccasins, around early 80s i suppose. i had some in beige suede.

Justleaveitblankthen · 30/07/2024 15:25

Oh yes, in the late 80's- early 90's I remember clubbing in shiny cycling pants with cut off denim shorts above. Statement belt and the obligatory DM's.
Black baseball cap worn backwards, bumbag and John Lennon style sunglasses (inside, in a dark club) 😎😂

Santasbigredbobblehat · 30/07/2024 15:28

I did the skirt over flared jeans teamed with a bindi.

Mid 90s I was desperate for a shiny slippery satin shirt in lime green or neon orange.

Wearing little plastic dummies as a necklace in the early 90s.

Wearing loads of 'shag bands' up my arm in the early 00s.

Wearing a strapping flowery dress from Tammy Girl over a white t-shirt in the early 90s.

More recently:
Jeggings and ballet pumps. Late 00s.
1950s style dresses. Early 2010s.

Too true, it was a very unforgiving fashion. My ... sturdy legs didn't suit it at all, but I wore them anyway - if you didn't you stuck out like a sore thumb.

Also I had an emerald green A line skirt then too, (mini of course) with a zip up the front with a ring pull and for some reason a little tartan 2-piece that I think I got from Chelsea Girl. Also cork-soled platforms from Dolcis (I even wore some as a bridesmaid - along with a purple satin dress with leg-o-mutton sleeves.)

"Peg" shaped jeans with coloured piping down the outer seams and webbing " funky" belts! Early 80s. Those were the days!

Haha, worn with boating sneakers and red sweatshirts tucked in. Soulies and Casuals.

Gummybear23 · 30/07/2024 15:37

Novelty shaped plastic earrings.
These could be any item I.e phones cutlery etc

And yes I also remember jelly shoes and the flimsy bags as well as reversible sweatshirts. I think they were all Disney iirc, mine was ‘101 Dalmatians’

Oooh, the fringes were just the best 🤩

Mini backpacks and the bindis in the 90s. I had a ridiculous amount of bindis and punk/goth with the kilt + fishnet 😄

Yep! Mine was a Dalmatian and on the reverse was 101 small Dalmatians in different Disney poses. Bloody loved that jumper. Would have been the same year as you.

I had the Dalmatian one! I've just turned 50.. It was definitely from M&S, I remember badgering my Mum for it, and then getting it for either Christmas or birthday!
