I'm not taking big fashions that everyone associates with an era, just those flash in the pan things that stick in your mind for some reason.

Like the early 90s there was 'ankle length denim skirts with square toed ankle boots' - I remember this as I wore that combo to my first gig without adults (Stereo MCs, 1993)

Then about a year later, GCSE year, came 'baggy cropped jumper over long white shirt', definitely wore that.

Early 00s came 'combats tucked into really pointy high heeled ankle boots', which I didn't wear but I did buy some metallic pointy boots on a whim, which I still own and occasionally wear for goth or steampunk events.

Which micro trends stick in your mind?

Disco pants. Very tight, stretchy, slightly shiny black material. Like the ones Olivia Newton- John wore in Grease. I loved mine. They used to stop traffic! 😂

Timeisnevertimeatall · 31/07/2024 06:27

@SinisterBumFacedCat - deely boppers, I had some of those.
Been nodding along enthusiastically - I'd forgotten some - loved the baby powder t-shirt 😍!
Also: over sized paisley shirts. Waistcoats. Side ponytails. Bright satin skin tight trousers. Boiler suits, mine was white with a neon belt and a turned up collar. Cricket jumpers. Winkle pickers. Hobble skirt with donkey jacket. Tiny purse on a long string like a necklace. Stripey eyeshadow. Stripey tights. White plastic beaded necklace that popped apart. Fingerless gloves.

Grolsch bottle tops on shoes - never did it myself.

Gummybear23 · 31/07/2024 07:33

Batwing tops.

stopthepigeonstopthepigeon · 31/07/2024 07:35

Ponchos in the mid-00s. I vaguely remember having an Afghan around that time as well.

stopthepigeonstopthepigeon · 31/07/2024 07:37

Oh and tartan trousers in the mid nineties.

LaMarschallin · 31/07/2024 07:37

@Netaporter

I don’t remember ponytails being attached, but highlight caps were sold in the chemists.

I remember those too - ouch!
First time I came across foils was when I treated myself to an appointment at Charles Worthington in London in the early 90s. Such an improvement.

But these were definitely swimming caps with a nylon ponytail attached to the back.
Perhaps it was just one chemist in the small town in Wales where I was brought up.
Or I've got false memories. Hope not - it's a slightly disturbing thing for my mind to have produced Smile

OnTheFerry · 31/07/2024 07:44

Shag bands!! Hideous

Echobelly · 31/07/2024 08:47

@Timeisnevertimeatall - oh yeah, waistcoats in early 90s. I had a black leather one I was very find of, often wore it buttoned up over a gauzy blouse, which I'm not sure if a fashion or a 'me aged 14' thing but I remember feeling very cool at the time

By the way, here are the early 00s pointy boots I mentioned in my OP

V necked bat wing jumpers worn back to front so the v was at the back. Worn with a neon plastic belt.

Retro12 · 31/07/2024 09:40

It was from the rave scene 😳

Dorothy Perkins, 1987ish, used to sell patterned tights with all sorts of designs and motifs. Everything from just dots to witches on broomsticks as I recall. I used to spend aaaages in there choosing.

I’d forgotten that. Yes, tights had lots of patterns on them - stripes, dots, zigzag etc.

I’m reliving my teens. My sister had a lemon yellow one. You don’t see lemon yellow around much nowadays. Wore it as lot in mid-late 80s.

Izzynohopanda · 31/07/2024 10:05

Tassels - I don’t mean hippy, boho, cowboy tassels, but there would be a tassel attached to the shoulder, or across the front etc.

Also tight skirts with splits up them (our needlework teacher used to get the girls to sew them up if worn to school)

JaxiiTaxii · 31/07/2024 12:57

Ooh I've thought of another one - Swatch watches. Although maybe not niche.

I had a Pop Swatch where the neon yellow face popped out of its holder on a stretchy band. Idea being you could change the look - mind blowing at the time!
But it only came with one band so put up & shut up.

I also had a Lego type watch where you could customise the band made of little blocks. Again, didn't have many extra blocks so not ideal.

Black Cord skirts. Mary Poppins style shoe boots - just found them on the Next website so must be 'in' again.

Oh I remember those boots - I used to have a pair of the ones in the photo
Mum used to go mad at me for wearing them when I walked the dog as she thought I'd break my neck.

daliesque · 31/07/2024 18:32

Hmm have just realised that my summer wardrobe is still stuck in late 90's boho......
As I'm mega short every maxi skirt had to have a rolled up waistband making me look about three times bigger than I was....or run the risk of tripping over the damn thing which I may have done on occasion

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 31/07/2024 20:26

@MrsMoastyToasty
I remember the gypsy skirts with the lacy underskirt showing below . My mum insisted on making me a broderie anglaise top herself as she said the ones in the shop were too low and not appropriate for a child !

MissingMoominMamma · 30/07/2024 17:43

Neon coloured tight crinkly mini dresses- with cut outs. I’m pretty sure the make was called Hunza. Some of them had rings holding the top and skirt together, like a swimsuit. Often worn with white stilettos.

At a similar time (late 80s), there were mini skirts and crop tops made from chamois leather, with fringing and beading. These were worn with matching boots.

I remember the short dresses from the chamois leather type fabric with the tassels and beads. Worn with boots or stilettos. The shop that sold these only had the same type of dresses .

Fridgetapas · 30/07/2024 17:57

Early 2000s - a coloured vest with a string vest over the top

That was an 80s fashion too but it was a neon coloured string vest on top .

I had a few clothes which had a deep V at the back - around mid 80s, I think.

There was a 90s micro trend for a deep V at the front...like a normal V neck but several inches longer and quite narrow.

Johnson's Babe Power and Rage Against the Washing Machine tops.

MaMisled · 30/07/2024 13:28

"Peg" shaped jeans with coloured piping down the outer seams and webbing " funky" belts! Early 80s. Those were the days!

I was going to mention the piped peg jeans, but you beat me to it @MaMisled ! Thanks for the reminder about the webbing belts!

i also remember burgundy pixie boots and burgundy ‘waffle’ jumpers! (I suppose other colours were available, but burgundy was THE colour at the time.)

MissSookieStackhouse · 01/08/2024 01:22

Anyone remember tote bags made of shiny vinyl material with advertising brands on them, like Heinz baked beans, Colmans mustard, Campbells soup or something similar? Sounds mad, but almost every girl in our school carried their books to school in them!
