Really niche trends only you seem to remember

I'm not taking big fashions that everyone associates with an era, just those flash in the pan things that stick in your mind for some reason.

Like the early 90s there was 'ankle length denim skirts with square toed ankle boots' - I remember this as I wore that combo to my first gig without adults (Stereo MCs, 1993)

Then about a year later, GCSE year, came 'baggy cropped jumper over long white shirt', definitely wore that.

Early 00s came 'combats tucked into really pointy high heeled ankle boots', which I didn't wear but I did buy some metallic pointy boots on a whim, which I still own and occasionally wear for goth or steampunk events.

Which micro trends stick in your mind?

Ooh I've thought of another one - Swatch watches. Although maybe not niche.

I cannot tell you how long I spent in the shop choosing my Swatch Watch as a teen!

Anyone remember tote bags made of shiny vinyl material with advertising brands on them, like Heinz baked beans, Colmans mustard, Campbells soup or something similar? Sounds mad, but almost every girl in our school carried their books to school in them!

Yes! Mostly messenger-bag style?

Jelly bags - you had to put a 'cool' plastic bag in them something like 'Chelsea girl'. Also, tartan jeans (only in Scotland maybe)

OMG I had forgotten about my tartan jeans! They were blue but with a tartan print Grin. Not Scotland though.. mine were from Geordie Jeans 😍

When GHD straighteners first came out in the early 2000s you were no-one unless you had poker straight hair fried to within an inch of its life.

Also ponchos had a moment in the early 2000s, to go with boho chic and Ugh boots with the sides caved in and filthy soles.

Ponchos!!!

LynetteScavo · 01/08/2024 10:15

Ponchos & fake sheepskin gilets were definitely very popular on the school run in the the early 2000's.

I tried a sheepskin gilet on in Monsoon and I looked like I was going to try to sell a used car.

And blue nail varnish on toes at the end of the 90's. EVERYBODY seemed to have blue toes!

lollipoprainbow · 01/08/2024 10:30

I had a see through tote bag with a beach scene inside real sand and everything I loved it !

I took a see-through tote bag to on a school trip to France and the teacher loved it so much she insisted on carrying it for me. It was really awkward asking her whenever I wanted something from my bag. It was a very cool bag though Grin

I also (as well as many other DC in my town in the early 80s) had an opaque rain coat with a print of roller boots on the back so they looked like they were slung over your shoulder. I'm not sure if these were just sold in my town, but they were very popular for about a year.

Yes! Specifically sold in a store called Octopus in Covent Garden iirc.

Also, I had one of those see through plastic tote bags but mine had windows that you could put photos in. I thought it was the shizz circa 1994.

‘Blanket coats’ in about 1980. In fluffy checked fabric.

I loved the reversible quilted sweatshirts. I had one with a large print of Mickey Mouse on the front and when you wore it inside out it was covered in little versions of Mickey Mouse.

I can't remember if it was quilted or just padded. But everyone had one. I'm 49 and this was when I was about 10.

Anyone remember them?

I had this EXACT jumper in 1987 - I thought it was the business! I was 7yrs old.

loudbatperson · 03/08/2024 00:07

I have a fond memory of miniature silver backpacks.

Sunflower print crop tops.

Neon orange and green everything.

Bright satin shirts.

Belly button jewels

Yes, I had one of these in the 1980s!!

AlbertCampion · 03/08/2024 00:18

Always yearned for Grolsch bottle tops for my shoes but never had them.

Also loved the ripped jeans with a bandana tied round the leg underneath to show through the rip.

This was early to mid 90s.

Then in early 2000s, my favourite jeans ever were French Connection Me Julies. Would love a pair of them again. In my head they were sooooo stylish.

camelfinger · 03/08/2024 07:41

The young men in the 90s would wear massive shirts in all colours, mainly blue but some other bright colours too. Teamed with school shoes and school black trousers as you couldn’t get in bars and many clubs in jeans and trainers.

camelfinger · 03/08/2024 07:45

A Shaun the Sheep rucksack late 90s for grown women.

TheFormidableMrsC · 03/08/2024 11:41

I've just thought of another. Low slung shorts rolled up and worn with a huge belt and floppy canvas boots. I thought I was the dogs bollocks wandering around Marbella wearing that!

Yes!! I had a Betty Boop one! I would love one now I am covered in small child mess daily. Such a practical, green idea. Someone needs to bring these back.

Yes to the black, over the knee socks, I wore them with babydoll style dresses, in the cooler months I'd put a white t shirt underneath.

Also recall neon satin shirts were a thing, mid nineties I think, my friend and I would prearrange which colour we were wearing so we were not the same.

Loads of sheer stuff too, to show off our wonderbras underneath!

OMG those satin mini shirts..I had loads..my fave being a white one!
My friend also had loads and I too remember the fuss over making sure we didn't wear the same colour.
I remember wearing my red one with a black t shirt top with a red glitter heart on the front! (Good god!)
I also had two pairs of slightly different color tarten trousers around that time.

Tara336 · 07/08/2024 17:06

Brink pink snake skin knee high books with black pencil skirts. Miss the lls fashions. It's so dull today

Around 1978 I had a pair of long socks that were in bright rainbow coloured stripes and they had individual toes knitted into them, like gloves. Anyone else have those?

Totally did.
Thought they were great..but hard to get on ha
