Does this ring look good on me? Tiffany Etoile "engagement" ring

I loved the Tiffany Etoile engagement ring when we got engaged 15 years ago, but couldn't afford it. Went with a generic sticky-uppy prong setting, looked lovely but I could never get used to wearing it (sensory issues, also I am clumsy with a hands-on job). Eventually sold it and just wore my plain platinum wedding ring.

DH suggested getting an anniversary ring. I'm not keen on eternity rings, and in my browsing, found a few Etoiles (now long discontinued) for sale.

I've tried one on and it's so smooth and comfortable - it's 0.35ct in platinum. I love it. It's got all its paperwork, had it checked out in Tiffany with the owner, it's a great price. But I have zero sense of style so am not sure if it looks awful or nice, if the diamond looks too small and the band too big, etc. I'd be very grateful for opinions from you stylish people. Honesty is welcome! Thank you.

Edit: argh sorry for my giant hand. I can't resize. My ring size is actually small (H1/2 UK).

Thank you everyone - sorry I've not replied directly to you all but I am reading everyone's posts and considering very carefully - I so appreciate all of you taking the time to reply. I have to go out now but will check back later and have a good think.

Have not read all the posts, but; if you get the first ring sized to fit your fingers, I think it will look quite lovely. I am with you, as I don't like rings with high settings either.

Flippingflamingo · 06/01/2024 16:10

I have the traditional Tiffany solitaire in 0.4. I have very dainty fingers so needed something small. I do find it spins round though and the claw irritates me at times.

I really like it. I make jewellery and have designed a few stacking sets - I like variations in widths.

HoneyButterPopcorn · 06/01/2024 16:12

I had my wedding ring made to fit around the stones in engagement ring (so it doesn’t swivel around)

HoneyButterPopcorn · 06/01/2024 16:13

And for cleaning rings - washing up liquid and a toothbrush will do the business.

DogFish614 · 06/01/2024 16:20

@HoneyButterPopcorn thank you - I'd love to see some of the stacking sets you've designed, if you don't mind sharing?

@Flippingflamingo I think your set is beautiful! Do you wear the engagement ring all the time or remove it for things?

@Amara123 Give your heart what it wants - love this!

isthismylifenow · 06/01/2024 16:39

I really like your first one OP. Yes it looks a little too bulky at the moment, but it wont look perfect if it's not the correct size. Once it's fitted, it will look very different in pictures.

The thing I like the most about it, is your reaction to it. You are going to be spending a fair sum, and you are most definitely going to wear something way more if you are as passionate about it as you seem to be, and it's comfortable enough for you to wear all the time.

The other one you admit you don't like as much. Others here may think it looks nicer, bit they aren't the ones wearing it. And you already know you wouldn't wear the style as easy.

It's a no-brainer from me just from reading your posts.

I am an overthinker too OP, so I totally get your turmoil here.

I don’t have the that ring, but my engagement ring is a bit on the chunky, wide side. When I went to ‘match’ the depth and width with a wedding band, it just did not look right, so I have a thinner and smaller but got 2 - so one sits either side of the engagement ring.

Anyway, I liked the first pic you posted.

Amberlady · 06/01/2024 17:43

I love the Etoile. The second one is nice too and very classic. I also love second hand jewellery. Such great value. If it looks right and feels right to you go for it.

Bluearrivabus · 06/01/2024 17:50

You have such beautiful hands! I have fat massive hands so am very jealous - my rings are a P - I’m a size 6 so the rest of me isn’t big so they look really out of proportion!

I love the one you love - it’s very of it’s time (eg mid 00s) which is when I got married so have a similarly chunky ring and I love it. Get the one that makes you happy.

LadyBird1973 · 06/01/2024 19:24

I think you should buy it because you've always loved it. But I would wear it without the wedding ring.

VisitationRights · 06/01/2024 20:00

I can handle a half eternity ring (and Tiffany’s has a gorgeous one) but the one I posted is similar to ring my sister just received from her husband for their anniversary. I love it but you are right, stones the full way around can be uncomfortable for some people.

Travelwith · 06/01/2024 20:03

If you’ve been thinking about it for 15 years and still love it, get it! When it is resized, it will look much better on your finger.

Namechange4448830938489 · 06/01/2024 20:16

I always think a recessed diamond takes away from its individual beauty. A diamond needs all the light it can get. It's a technique often used to embellish a smaller diamond or even to use imperfectly cut diamonds or diamond chips.

afuckinggoat · 06/01/2024 20:37

The maths doesn't add up to me. You say you got engaged 15 years ago, but your beautiful hands are like a teenager's. How do you have such youthful hands? I need to start wearing SPF hand cream.

InAPickle12345 · 06/01/2024 21:04

Love it! I'm a fan of chunkier jewellery anyway, but that ring is beautiful and looks gorgeous on your hand 🥰

Justia · 06/01/2024 21:15

OP, just to say I have really enjoyed this thread and all the lovely photos of everyone’s dazzlers!

Please keep us updated on what you decide on and pic of the final ring/s.

Also thank you for introducing me to the idea of a Tiffany wedding ring, I am loving them!!

Castellanos · 06/01/2024 22:40

Re band width - I think I'd go for something the same width, or markedly different to your wedding band. For me, although they are different thicknesses, they are a bit too close iyswim? Maybe you need another new ring to go with it! Either way it is still a beautiful ring and if you love it, get it!

squigglygiggly · 06/01/2024 23:36

OP you have to stop and thing about what YOU like. Personally think it looks great and it fits your criteria. Simple, non pokey. Bear in mind MN is a random selection of people. Take a look at any high street or crowd. In all honesty how many of the people you see would you ask for style advice? The vast majority of people have very little clue about what looks good. Don't listen to us. Go with what you love. You'll be the one wearing it and I guarantee no one will bat a negative eyelid at your ring.

I love a wide band with a similarly sized diamond but I find the Tiffany Etoile setting very clunky with its () effect around the stone. If you like that style then maybe look at other brands? You pay a lot for the Tiffany name, too. I love this sort of setting for example where the band looks almost "dimpled" where the stone sits in it. Obviously lots of differences here (gold, yellow diamond) but just to emphasise there is a whole world of chunkier banded rings out there beyond Tiffany.

Such a pretty ring

moonshinepoursthroughmywindow · 06/01/2024 23:40

I like the first one, but then I don't like very delicate rings. That's probably the closest thing to a "conventional" engagement ring I have ever seen and actually liked. If anything I think it would look even better if your wedding ring was about the same width, but it wouldn't be a deal breaker for me.

Blingismything · 07/01/2024 10:42

I love Tiffany Etoile, the engagement ring would look good with the Etoile band as it is the same width as the engagement ring. There are pave and scattered diamonds versions of the matching band. Currently it overpowers your wedding band, could you wear it on your right hand on it's own?

Blingismything · 07/01/2024 10:46

This is the Etoile set.
