Does this ring look good on me? Tiffany Etoile "engagement" ring

DogFish614 · 06/01/2024 11:23

I loved the Tiffany Etoile engagement ring when we got engaged 15 years ago, but couldn't afford it. Went with a generic sticky-uppy prong setting, looked lovely but I could never get used to wearing it (sensory issues, also I am clumsy with a hands-on job). Eventually sold it and just wore my plain platinum wedding ring.

DH suggested getting an anniversary ring. I'm not keen on eternity rings, and in my browsing, found a few Etoiles (now long discontinued) for sale.

I've tried one on and it's so smooth and comfortable - it's 0.35ct in platinum. I love it. It's got all its paperwork, had it checked out in Tiffany with the owner, it's a great price. But I have zero sense of style so am not sure if it looks awful or nice, if the diamond looks too small and the band too big, etc. I'd be very grateful for opinions from you stylish people. Honesty is welcome! Thank you.

Edit: argh sorry for my giant hand. I can't resize. My ring size is actually small (H1/2 UK).

You have beautiful hands and the second picture looks amazing.

Jewellery is very personal but I can’t help thinking if you loved the first one, you wouldn’t need to ask for opinions.

Olika · 06/01/2024 12:00

The 1st is too chunky, the 2nd is really nice.

Themountainwithsnowonit · 06/01/2024 12:01

I've got similarly narrow fingers, and don't think that's the right style for them. The band also looks bulky next to your wedding ring.

What about this one - it's not got a collet that sticks up and would look good on slender fingers?

All of that said, if you love it, that's really all that matters.

Edit just to say I love the second ring, but if you didn't find your previous one comfortable, might that one be the same?

Sallysoup · 06/01/2024 12:04

Sorry I also think the second ring looks much nicer and more proportional.

If you love it, and it feels good, then buy it and wear it! It’s obviously left quite an impression that you’ve been thinking about it all these years after all.
I like it on you, and that’s despite it not being my normal personal style.

@MarleyandMarleyWoooo thank you - this is it - I've always had it at the back of my mind. I feel it's "me".

I did think people would like the second better. It's the same style as my original, which was a Tiffany knock-off. I know I should like it but...hmm. I am very willing to accept this may be because I have dodgy taste 😬

The comments are helpful because there's another Etoile with a larger diamond, which comes with an even wider band (as the width matches that of the diamond) - so I can rule that one out!

The second one looks better with your wedding band. I think this is what makes the first look too chunky, the imbalance of sizes.

you don't like the second one so opinions on it are somewhat irrelevant.

That's a lovely design! Looks very comfortable too.

Yes I worry I'll be back to where I started with the second ring. I bought my original when I cared more what other people thought.

That's helpful, thank you - I guess it's back to front to the width difference most people have (wider band, narrowing ring with stone).

I don't like the second right now, but I am open to changing my mind 😀I am a bit fickle and uncertain with jewellery!

Agree with PP’s it looks rather chunky - but tbh no one else’s opinion matters. If you love it that’s all that does, and if it doesn’t trigger your sensory issues that’s even better. Speaking from experience comfort over style is preferable when it comes to sensory issues.

zeibesaffron · 06/01/2024 12:11

I love it - looks perfect and not too bulky! Nothing not too like here!!

LuckySantangelo35 · 06/01/2024 12:11

The second ring looks TONS better

dont think it looks insubstantial OP @DogFish614

Ah thank you. I've never had a nice comment about my hands before - I wash my hands constantly (job) and need to stop dodging the hand cream.

I don't really wear any other jewellery so I'm mostly just completely at sea with it. See also handbags, and other accessories!

Would you consider wearing the engagement ring on your right hand, thus moving it away from the wedding band where it looks too chunky?

I have my gran’s engagement ring next to my wedding ring as they work well together. I wear an eternity ring and my engagement ring on my right hand.

PossumintheHouse · 06/01/2024 12:16

Second photo looks far better and natural. The original band is too bulky on you and my eye would be drawn to that rather than the diamond. Second photo looks more elegant and suited to your hand and finger shape.

Metallicant · 06/01/2024 12:16

The second is so much better. Your hands look beautiful in that one but I don’t think the first is very flattering.

TattiePants · 06/01/2024 12:19

I do think it’s too chunky and overshadows your wedding ring.

DogFish614 · 06/01/2024 12:19

Thank you everyone - sorry I've not replied directly to you all but I am reading everyone's posts and considering very carefully - I so appreciate all of you taking the time to reply. I have to go out now but will check back later and have a good think.

I have very dainty fingers. My rings are size i and a half and had to be specially made. Pic 2 looks lovely in my opinion but maybe I'm biased because that's how mine are. If I was choosing now and not 30 years ago I'd go for similar.

TheFlis · 06/01/2024 12:26

It doesn’t help that the 2nd picture is a much better angle than the first. I think if you posted a photo of the first ring from the angle of the second photo where you can see the whole hand, some views may differ.

laclochette · 06/01/2024 12:28

I love a wide band with a similarly sized diamond but I find the Tiffany Etoile setting very clunky with its () effect around the stone. If you like that style then maybe look at other brands? You pay a lot for the Tiffany name, too. I love this sort of setting for example where the band looks almost "dimpled" where the stone sits in it. Obviously lots of differences here (gold, yellow diamond) but just to emphasise there is a whole world of chunkier banded rings out there beyond Tiffany.

I love the ring but I'm wondering, because it's quite chunky, it would look better on its own, without the wedding ring. Having said that, I've got a chunky engagement ring and my wedding band doesn't really go but I wear it anyway! It's a beautiful ring, you will get used to it. Maybe try the wedding band above the ring, see what that looks like?

HouseofCardsComesATumblingDown · 06/01/2024 12:29

I love the first one.
It's more my style too.

It's more modern and understated I think.

I also had a prongy pointy engagement ring which I always felt conscious of and rarely wore.
For my 10th anniversary I had it reset into a low plain halo rubover style. I love it and now wear it all the time.
I love how it neatly fits with my wedding ring. I just find the simplicity very satisfying.
I also love the slight chunkyness on dainty hands. I think it emphasises the slimness of your hand and is a bit cooler

I think the second ring is nice and more standard engagement. But it's obviously not you.

My only question is: does the first ring sit neatly with your wedding ring? That's so important imo. I hate rings with gaps and spaces.
If that's important to you, you can get rings specifically designed that will sit flush with your wedding ring in a similar style if that one doesn't.

MuchTooTired · 06/01/2024 12:29

I love the first picture! You’ve got lovely hands, and to my mind anyway you’ve got the dainty fingers to pull off a chunky band. The only thing I’d consider would be upgrading your wedding band so it’s the same to match the engagement ring.

As a caveat though, I’m about as unfashionable and uncoordinated as you can get so my opinion is pretty worthless 😂

Sunshineboo · 06/01/2024 12:29

i agree with @TheFlis - i think it is the angle of the photo.

personally i like the first one as a ring and am sure from a better angle it will look as good as the second.

the first is a ring you have always had on your mind. at the end of the day anything else will feel a compromise. get that one, get is re sized and smile every time you see it xx
