Does this ring look good on me? Tiffany Etoile "engagement" ring

DogFish614 · 06/01/2024 11:23

I loved the Tiffany Etoile engagement ring when we got engaged 15 years ago, but couldn't afford it. Went with a generic sticky-uppy prong setting, looked lovely but I could never get used to wearing it (sensory issues, also I am clumsy with a hands-on job). Eventually sold it and just wore my plain platinum wedding ring.

DH suggested getting an anniversary ring. I'm not keen on eternity rings, and in my browsing, found a few Etoiles (now long discontinued) for sale.

I've tried one on and it's so smooth and comfortable - it's 0.35ct in platinum. I love it. It's got all its paperwork, had it checked out in Tiffany with the owner, it's a great price. But I have zero sense of style so am not sure if it looks awful or nice, if the diamond looks too small and the band too big, etc. I'd be very grateful for opinions from you stylish people. Honesty is welcome! Thank you.

Edit: argh sorry for my giant hand. I can't resize. My ring size is actually small (H1/2 UK).

Yessssss I’m so so so glad you went for it!! Yay!

SillyOldBucket · 08/01/2024 09:23

I love the style of the ring but feel it's just a little too clunky beside the wedding band which kind of pales into insignificance against it. If the width of the band could be a bit narrower, then it would be just perfect.

Satincat · 08/01/2024 11:35

I think it's the right choice and it will look great once the band width matches your wedding ring. I don't think the difference in band depth is an issue at all and I think the solid look of the engagement ring next to the wedding ring is lovely on you. I get the alternative "dainty rings" appreciation, but personally I prefer the more substantial look of the combination you've chosen.

Saisong · 08/01/2024 12:03

Sounds like you made a great choice, and you will love it believe me! As you really wanted to see the other Etoiles out there I thought I'd post my (duped) version. I don't have your elegant fingers though, and my hands are dry and freezing in this weather!

Like others have suggested I wear it the 'wrong way' with my wedding band - just because it feels comfier that way. The engagement ring is platinum, the wedding band palladium. They both need a polish!

I have also posted my other ring on the other hand, because it felt left out! It's just silver and blue topaz, DH gave it to me for my 40th. I do love the chunkier rings with no claws.

The etoile is simply stunning on you. I kept going back to your pic and the more I look, the more I love it .
i have a special anniversary coming up soon and would love a ring , I have no idea what to go for and my budget is quite low.
Love seeing all the rings people have shared.

Further out photos!

Try it the other way round. Wedding ring on top. I think it’d look more balanced then.

savethatkitty · 08/01/2024 18:18

I think it looks lovely on you! If it's something you love & something you've always wanted go for it. I've got a ring I bought almost 30 years ago, when I was a teen, earning my own money. I love it just as much now as I did back then when I saw it in the shop window. So, a good investment.

Mt61 · 08/01/2024 20:29

If it was a choice I would wear the diamond band as a wedding/ engagement ring on its own, it’s a lovely ring, but partner may not be too happy if you stopped wearing your true wedding ring.

Do you love it? If you love it then absolutely go for it. My opinion on it? It's beautiful. I have very slender fingers and sometimes wear chunky/big rings. Here's a simple one I'm currently wearing (Please ignore the wrinkles and awful discoloured nails, I'm undergoing chemo and it's wrecked my nails and made weight fall off me hence bloody wrinkles on my hands!). I just wanted to include a photo so you could see and if every single person on here told me it looked bloody awful I wouldn't give a damn because I love it and that, at the end of the day, is all that counts. If I saw you wearing the Tiffany ring I would definitely compliment you!

Edited

@MouseMinge I am so touched you took the time to post your lovely ring and your hands are elegant and fabulous. I'm sending you the warmest wishes for your health and hope the chemo will be over soon xx

To everyone else, thank you so much again for your lovely messages 💐

@DogFish614 I realised after I posted that you'd gone with the ring and I was delighted for you. Thank you for your lovely post and enjoy your gorgeous new ring!

Nanaof1 · 09/01/2024 11:06

@MouseMinge

That ring is so pretty! I, too, like chunky rings sometimes.

I hope your chemo sessions are over soon and that you will soon be cancer free. {{HUGS}} and best wishes!

@DogFish614 did your ring arrive yet? If so, share a photo as I'm worryingly invested... 😍

Hey @DogFish614 did you get your ring?

elliesmummy19 · 02/06/2024 16:01

Do you have an update after getting it resized, OP?

Commonsense22 · 15/09/2024 09:37

I have a thicker band and love it - it was chosen by DH and I'd never considered band thickness until I received it.
My wedding band is the same width. That makes a big difference in how it looks.

DogFish614 · 16/06/2025 21:11

I'm so sorry it took me such a long time to update!

Well. I ended up not keeping the Etoile. It was really beautiful, but on being properly sized, I found the width uncomfortable 😬 I couldn't believe it, but just couldn't get used to it. I ended up selling it on, felt like an idiot, then swore off jewellery for a long time, believing that I was just un-pleasable with my sensory weirdnesses.

I eventually started experimenting with costume rings and realised that it wasn't prongs that were the problem, it was badly made ones that snagged and pulled on things as my original ring did.

I grew to quite like more delicate, thinner rings and realised I find them comfortable to wear.

So... this is what I've ended up with as my anniversary ring. Tiffany classic setting, 0.64ct, D colour, VS1 clarity, size H1/2 finger, with the matching knife edge band. (Original wedding band is put away safely). Both bought second-hand and sent to Tiffany for sizing and polishing (which took ages). I've worn it a few weeks now, it is very comfortable and I feel like I've finally found The One.

Apologies again but hopefully the above explains why I didn't update sooner! As before, sorry for my looming NHS-worker dry and overwashed hand.

Looks great @DogFish614 !!!!

DyslexicPoster · 16/06/2025 21:38

Very pretty. Shame about the first ring as it was very pretty. I also love a costume ring. I had a few when pg in case I got pre eclampsia again and needed it cut off. You must be very happy! Also love pre loved rings.

DeSoleil · 16/06/2025 21:50

If you really like it, try it the other way round with it on the bottom and the wedding band on the top.

It looks too heavy at the moment and I much prefer the second ring.

DeSoleil · 16/06/2025 21:51

Sorry, I did t see your update!

Yes, the one you’ve ended up with is lovely.

Flanimals · 16/06/2025 22:06

Absolutely stunning on you OP - declaring bias as never liked the other one and adore the classic style you have now.

Your hand looks beautiful now you are wearing the ring and it’s not wearing you!

Glad you are happy with it and it feels comfortable on, more importantly.

isthismylifenow · 17/06/2025 05:41

Really gorgeous @DogFish614.
I think this suits you so much better.

I can't believe this thread is a year and a half old now. 😀 But I am so glad you found the one.
