Does this ring look good on me? Tiffany Etoile "engagement" ring

DogFish614 · 06/01/2024 11:23

I loved the Tiffany Etoile engagement ring when we got engaged 15 years ago, but couldn't afford it. Went with a generic sticky-uppy prong setting, looked lovely but I could never get used to wearing it (sensory issues, also I am clumsy with a hands-on job). Eventually sold it and just wore my plain platinum wedding ring.

DH suggested getting an anniversary ring. I'm not keen on eternity rings, and in my browsing, found a few Etoiles (now long discontinued) for sale.

I've tried one on and it's so smooth and comfortable - it's 0.35ct in platinum. I love it. It's got all its paperwork, had it checked out in Tiffany with the owner, it's a great price. But I have zero sense of style so am not sure if it looks awful or nice, if the diamond looks too small and the band too big, etc. I'd be very grateful for opinions from you stylish people. Honesty is welcome! Thank you.

Edit: argh sorry for my giant hand. I can't resize. My ring size is actually small (H1/2 UK).

I'm not a fan of the Tiffany ring. It doesn't look elegant as the band is too thick. The second one looks nicer. I've always thought the wedding band should be thicker than the engagement band so maybe I'd like it more with a thicker wedding band.

Love it!
not sure why people don’t like it weird

People have different tastes. I like the ring. I love that cool, minimal Scandinavian type of jewellery. Other people like very ornate vintage rings. I don't. I find them fussy and wedding bands don't sit flush against them. Many people like a simple solitaire on a plain band. I find them very generic. It's all personal taste.

Another 'love it' vote here. My engagement ring is a chunky platinum square cut ring with inset diamond - like you I wanted it all flush. I still love it 17 years later.

Wow, I am so grateful for everyone taking the time to reply, give me honest opinions, suggestions, and of course post pictures of your gorgeous rings!! Thank you so so much to everyone.

It's been enormously helpful in clarifying my thought processes, which are as follows:

  • Most people won't notice (or care) unless they are interested in jewellery, so get what I like - agreed
  • I know now a lot of people think it's chunky and somewhat fugly on my hand. Despite knowing this, it hasn't put me off and I still want it, so that probably means it's true love 😉
  • I can't bear prong / claw settings. I tried on a prong ring to try to convince myself yesterday, but - nope.
  • There are lots of secret Etoile wearers who (crucially) still love and wear their rings after many years
  • My heart did a little leap every time someone posted said Etoile
  • It just takes me back to that 2009 time of picking rings and feels a bit like coming full circle, in a nice way
  • It's just me - simple, practical and functional rather than decorative

So I decided to go for it! It's on its way to Tiffany service centre right now. It will take a few weeks to resize (sob) but I'll be back to post a photo when it returns.

I can only assume my looming monster hand is now recognisable up and down the country, so if you see it with its new ring, give me a knowing nod or something.

I love it, and think it looks great on you - but I really like chunky jewellery!

Namechange9876543210 · 07/01/2024 14:54

I think the band looks too wide and chunky next to the thinner wedding ring.

LadyBird1973 · 07/01/2024 15:04

I'm so pleased for you that you decided to go ahead - it's really important to have something you love when you'll be wearing it every day.
Please don't forget to post a photo when it comes back!

BasiliskStare · 07/01/2024 15:06

Well done @Dogfish

I don't think it looks clunky on you - I think is it practical , simple , understated but elegant and most of all you love it. The last is the most important thing.

HouseofCardsComesATumblingDown · 07/01/2024 15:29

Great decision.

Wouldn't it be exciting if one of us recognises your hand with the ring on when out and about 🤣

I love @chalkyc2 rings! So cool and scandi like a previous poster said.
And @Blingismything's etoile stack. Gorgeous. I love that look.

Do post a pic when you get the ring @DogFish614 I love a ring thread.

LadyLolaRuben · 07/01/2024 15:36

The first ring is too chunky against the wedding ring. Also with small fingers that chunkier ring may press into the side of your little and ring fingers and be uncomfortable. I find this with "I" size ring finger.

onceinabluemoon2 · 07/01/2024 15:47

@DogFish614
So pleased you went for it!

I think it's a very stylish ring, not at all fussy and just so comfortable. I like statement / different jewellery but usually inexpensive and not with any type of diamonds/garments so wasn't after that particularly in an engagement ring either. I'm most definitely not someone wearing leopard print or someone who wears bright nail varnish (none or clear / natural if any). Each to their own!

But as I said upthread, I've worn my Etoile everyday for 20 years, whether I've been changing nappies, engaged in pottery or art activities or gone swimming in the sea. It's just another part of me.

justrecognisedmyneighbouronhere · 07/01/2024 16:25

@DogFish614 so pleased you went for the ring you love. I had an internally flawless asscher cut solitaire which although was a rare and beautiful diamond it never brought me joy. I swapped it for my beautiful flower ring which is worth less but brings me immense joy!

It's beautiful and looks lovely on you but you may need a thicker wedding ring to balance it, would changing your wedding ring bother you? It wouldn't me but I'm not very sentimental about 'stuff' !! My husband thinks his wedding ring is a circle of love and would never change it!! 😆

Mummamap · 07/01/2024 17:41

Wear it under your wedding band. I think it is lovely that you have wanted it for so long and now have one if you want it. Wear it with pride as it will make you happy - to be honest you shouldn’t care what others think x

Ladymeade · 07/01/2024 18:02

Conversely - what does the band look like on top? Just a thought x

Castellanos · 07/01/2024 18:03

Yay, congrats OP! I'm sure you'll love it and find just the way you want to wear it. Enjoy!

Lostcause01 · 07/01/2024 18:03

If you love it, have it. You've got to wear it and live with it. If it still gives you goosebumps have it.

NettleTea · 07/01/2024 18:18

if you love the first, then get the first. It needs resizing a little and thats free. But what Id do it wear it the other way round, with the wedding ring at the top, and engagement next to your hand.

cakewench · 07/01/2024 18:23

OP I have a moi et toi style diamond ring which is very high set and it's not everyone's cup of tea but it's my favourite.

I don't really love your ring but I'll be honest, you're the one who will be looking at it! It's the same reason I like to make sure I have a decent manicure: it's in my range of vision nearly all the time. It should be something I want to see.

I'm excited for you that you've found the ring you wanted, and for a good price as well!

OldPerson · 07/01/2024 18:43

It looks amazing. You love it. Go buy it and be happy.

Catkildonan · 07/01/2024 18:45

It is beautiful! Go for it!!!

Ladymeade · 07/01/2024 18:52

Chunky and fugly?!! Really?! It is beautiful and looks fine on your hand x

The band is too big for the size of the diamond. That second pic is way better!

This , definitely

Hooray! Yes, it is true love, and all excellent reasoning too. ( It happened to be the one I preferred too, I think it is understated and absolutely stunning) Enjoy it OP 🤗
