Does this ring look good on me? Tiffany Etoile "engagement" ring

DogFish614 · 06/01/2024 11:23

I loved the Tiffany Etoile engagement ring when we got engaged 15 years ago, but couldn't afford it. Went with a generic sticky-uppy prong setting, looked lovely but I could never get used to wearing it (sensory issues, also I am clumsy with a hands-on job). Eventually sold it and just wore my plain platinum wedding ring.

DH suggested getting an anniversary ring. I'm not keen on eternity rings, and in my browsing, found a few Etoiles (now long discontinued) for sale.

I've tried one on and it's so smooth and comfortable - it's 0.35ct in platinum. I love it. It's got all its paperwork, had it checked out in Tiffany with the owner, it's a great price. But I have zero sense of style so am not sure if it looks awful or nice, if the diamond looks too small and the band too big, etc. I'd be very grateful for opinions from you stylish people. Honesty is welcome! Thank you.

Edit: argh sorry for my giant hand. I can't resize. My ring size is actually small (H1/2 UK).

What does it matter what anyone thinks if you like it? If it’s a style that you gone back to after a number of years it would seem you do really like it. And it sounds like the sensory feel is really important to you so I can understand why you like the etoile as it’s so smooth.

If you’re worried about balance with your wedding ring then you could wear it on a different finger/hand. No law that says you have to stack rings.

You could also buy a diamond and have something made (putting any old jewellery towards it eg odd earrings etc). And then it will be exactly what you want.

I think it looks lovely OP. Very classy.

Stating the obvious here, but what matters most though is what you think.

MouseMinge · 07/01/2024 20:21

Do you love it? If you love it then absolutely go for it. My opinion on it? It's beautiful. I have very slender fingers and sometimes wear chunky/big rings. Here's a simple one I'm currently wearing (Please ignore the wrinkles and awful discoloured nails, I'm undergoing chemo and it's wrecked my nails and made weight fall off me hence bloody wrinkles on my hands!). I just wanted to include a photo so you could see and if every single person on here told me it looked bloody awful I wouldn't give a damn because I love it and that, at the end of the day, is all that counts. If I saw you wearing the Tiffany ring I would definitely compliment you!

I have the same ring size as you and my first ring was similar. It was lost unfortunately and when I was replacing it the woman said the style was too heavy for me and I chose a more dainty square ring. Looking back at photos though I think the original ring looked better.

I'd go with what you prefer and what feels better on you.

Justontherightsideofnormal · 07/01/2024 20:37

this is such a personal thing. Probably best not to ask people you don’t know, just go with what you think/want.

Crazycatlady64 · 07/01/2024 20:43

I prefer the second one. It just suits you so much better. I don’t really like the setting of the first one. It reminds me of a man’s ring. However, it’s you that’s wearing it.

Jeannie88 · 07/01/2024 20:48

Lovely ring but I went for a flatter 5 small diamond one as knew I would knock off a big one! Unfortunately lost it and my wedding ring during a spontaneous mad midnight beach swimming episode, so stupid to take them off! Please don't do this as no replacement can ever be worthy, wishing you congratulations 💖

WilloTheWispy · 07/01/2024 20:53

@DogFish614 Great update! Can’t wait to see the resized ring 👍🏻

Weedoormatnomore · 07/01/2024 20:59

@DogFish614 Sorry if I missed this being asked what material is your wedding ring? Sure I was told years ago they need to be same material or they will wear each other down!
If you like it that's all that matters your the one who will be looking at it.

Blueink · 07/01/2024 21:18

The band is far too thick/bulky - the classic band looks really pretty on your hand, but of course the setting will likely be impractical for your job.

Rainsdropskeepfalling · 07/01/2024 21:39

OP I'm glad you went for it.

I never knew what the style was called - my husband had my engagement ring made for me based on the Tiffany design. He chose it because you can wear regular lab gloves over it without shredding them.

Yes it's a chunky ring and I had to buy a wide wedding ring so that it wouldn't disappear beneath it. But I love the solidity of it and it's not as in your face as some of the solitaires (which just don't work with gloves).

thelengthspeoplegoto · 07/01/2024 22:00

The first ring looks great on you. It just doesn't go with the wedding ring. The wedding ring doesn't have to be broader but it would look better if it were the same depth as the engagement ring so they look like a set.

  • My heart did a little leap every time someone posted said Etoile
Yes! Totally right call, OP! Your first post is brimming with excitement about that ring. Think it will look great. Good for you. Lovely happy thread.

Wow, I am so grateful for everyone taking the time to reply, give me honest opinions, suggestions, and of course post pictures of your gorgeous rings!! Thank you so so much to everyone.

It's been enormously helpful in clarifying my thought processes, which are as follows:

  • Most people won't notice (or care) unless they are interested in jewellery, so get what I like - agreed
  • I know now a lot of people think it's chunky and somewhat fugly on my hand. Despite knowing this, it hasn't put me off and I still want it, so that probably means it's true love 😉
  • I can't bear prong / claw settings. I tried on a prong ring to try to convince myself yesterday, but - nope.
  • There are lots of secret Etoile wearers who (crucially) still love and wear their rings after many years
  • My heart did a little leap every time someone posted said Etoile
  • It just takes me back to that 2009 time of picking rings and feels a bit like coming full circle, in a nice way
  • It's just me - simple, practical and functional rather than decorative

So I decided to go for it! It's on its way to Tiffany service centre right now. It will take a few weeks to resize (sob) but I'll be back to post a photo when it returns.

I can only assume my looming monster hand is now recognisable up and down the country, so if you see it with its new ring, give me a knowing nod or something.

Good call op. It looks nice. Definitely not fugly. More people have voted yes to buying it, and thats quite an endorsement given people all have different tastes. I think its nice that it was what you wanted when you got engaged so it has those memories.

RosieBurdock · 07/01/2024 22:21

Your hands are extremely nice to show it off by the way. Much better than my paws.

BreathingDeep · 07/01/2024 22:58

Your update gave me the biggest smile OP! As someone who loves jewellery, I believe wholeheartedly in being led by your heart, not your head. It’s the perfect choice and will look incredible when it comes back all shiny, sparkly and the perfect size.

You’ve all inspired me to clean my jewellery now!

NCforthisringthread · 07/01/2024 23:00

@DogFish614 I think it looks good on you and will even more so when sized. I'm happy for you as you now sound very sure what you want 🥳.

For anyone else who wants nothing sticking up but hasn't found what they want yet, how about channel set gems?

My (half band, it's more practical than full) eternity ring is only 4mm wide to match my square edged wedding band so it has very small round diamonds channeled in it.

This pic is to give the idea of channel set but mine has wider edges on the channel showing a wider proportion of gold on the top.

So the edges of my little diamonds seem slightly more tucked under and I don't see down the sides of the channel like this. It looks more like a flat gold band with a row of little diamonds inset along the top half of it. Either I asked for that to match the wedding band better or the designer knew it would. I can't remember now but I prefer mine to the proportions in this pic.

They sparkle well, even with the design I have and mine being less of the width of my ring than the ones shown. Mine go further round though (that doesn't look like half).

browneyes77 · 07/01/2024 23:57

My opinion?

Doesn’t matter.

As long as you love it, that’s all that matters

Mamanyt · 08/01/2024 00:13

The setting looks clunky on your beautiful, dainty fingers to me...BUT, jewelry is SO subjective. Perhaps, after it is sized and sitting just right, it might look very different to me. The important thing is that YOU LOVE IT. You're getting it for you, how it makes YOU feel. Nothing else should matter.

Jillybloop393 · 08/01/2024 00:52

I prefer the second one - it looks better on your hand than the first, as well, but you must choose, really.

Stripedfluffysocks · 08/01/2024 01:06

First ring is magical on you and for you.

It has your heart.
It can only be that ring for you.
I am a major bling lover of rings with flush low settings even though the stones would dazzle more if they had the high prong setting to let the light through. I just don’t like how they catch or look, they wouldn’t suit me.
That first Tiffany ring I adore, I think it looks beautiful on your finger, you’d look twice at it whereas the other is classic, safe, dare I say nondescript - it’s just down to taste, I love eclectic and flat rings.
i look forward to seeing it on your finger 💗

IhateHPSDeaneCnt · 08/01/2024 02:17

Go for it! What a lovely back story! X

Jellycats4life · 08/01/2024 07:35

Glad you went for the first ring OP. Jewellery taste is so individual - the heart wants what the heart wants!

AmIEnough · 08/01/2024 08:13

I think it looks absolutely lovely! If you love it, just get it!

Jillybloop393 · 08/01/2024 08:19

Can't wait to see it all sized and on your finger. It'll look beautiful, and it's the one that your heart wants!
